Been working with TSM for 20+ years

Been performing health-checks for 16+ years

Same problems & resolution everywhere

9 years ago decided to write a tool – (TSM Tamer)

Tool-plosion – many great ideas (DART)

ProtecTrix rewrite (unification of all products / ideas)

With dev team we’re well positioned for devops engagements

Technical guys can handle most infrastructure projects

Great toolset for software defined future

Why do we exist ? Realised that most places couldn t see their issues

Why do we exist ?2 to assist with the daily toils of a storage admin….

We needed to make it easier…..

The business says...

we need better RPO & RTO Sugar I can’t make this heap go any faster!

window – we can’t have an outage

budgets need to be stretched

time to provision is too slow

we need extra environments

data volume explosion

we need regime options for VE

Now I have snapshots – all my headaches are gone – NOT!

that means I’m not getting my new storage upgrade doesn’t it...

I’m going as fast as I can guv! You did shrink the TSM team down to just me with the cleaner covering holidays at the last review

So you want me to backup the same database multiple times each day and retain them all for months if not years?

Why do people keep ramming in new systems and not thinking about backing them up – grrr.. and I love docs renamed as v1.0, v1.1 etc!

From 200 to 2000 VMs in the space of a year and now it’s my job to protect them all.. Up/down/renames, CBT resets, retention regimes

Data Pods are built on IBM Spectrum Protect

Data pods must be ‘partnered’ (on-premise or to a cloud service)

Site workload is balanced over site member pods

Page 9: Getting the best from Spectrum Protect using Cloud Services

Benefits of using a cloud analysis layer7 ProtecTrix Benefits

Cloud Reporting/Analysis Benefits

At a glance single pane of glass for all sites

Eliminate the ‘ahhh’ factor

Extra pair of ‘skilled’ eyes working 24x7

Significantly reduce the overhead of data protection regime

Improves overall service provided by Spectrum Protect (TSM)

Help to manage the causes of ‘artificial’ growth

Apportion the costs of data protection

Trend and predict capacity requirements

Offsite in case of a site disaster

Measure overall process/session KPI’s

Only available to authorized users

Transaction Reporting (backups, restores, snapshots, replication)

24x7 Availability

No performance impact on your existing platforms

Enables consultative access without exposing your infrastructure

ProtecTrix Deployment Options8 Delivery Options

Options – We can….

Sit on the edge in the cloud and simply ‘report’ on your setup

Add the intelligence layer delivered on your hardware

Replace your existing environment with Data Pods

Replace your execution layer (scheduler / job control)

Manage all of you client configurations (TDP/FCM/dsmc etc)

Deployment options:

Virtual Machine

Appliance

Cloud

Fit For Purpose Analysis9 ProtecTrix™ can analyse your operations from the cloud

Invitation to put your config through our FFP (fit for purpose) test

1. Go to https://invite.attam.co.uk portal and define your sites/instance setup

2. Use the portal java collector to gather data from your TSM instances

3. Upload the collections back at: https://invite.attam.co.uk

4. Use our application to take a look at what you have

5. See if your environment gets a PASS or FAIL against standard FFP criteria

Our expert team can also analyse your uploads and will be able to suggest a range of actions that might be taken to improve your environment.

Page 12: Getting the best from Spectrum Protect using Cloud Services

ProtecTrix™ can manage licensing from the cloud

Spectrum Protect has two main licensing options

1. Processor Value Units (PVUs)

• Based on the server / node hardware in use

• Pay per PVU per agent

2. Spectrum Protect Suite

• Pay per TB

• Can deploy any agents in any combination…

Which is the right option?

1. Processor Value Units (PVUs)

• Difficult to manage in dynamic environment

2. Spectrum Protect Suite

• Easy to manage, but data growth = £££

3. The right answer:

• ‘License Assessment & Health Check’

Licensing Assessment & Health Check10

Page 13: Getting the best from Spectrum Protect using Cloud Services

Licensing Assessment & Health Check10 ProtecTrix™ can manage licensing from the cloud

This needs to assess

1. Licensing Requirements

• PVU v Capacity

• Current and planned infrastructure

• Taking account of PSP storage options

• Remember – Deduplication and compression = smaller capacity

2. Is environment fit for purpose?

• Not just ‘a PASS or FAIL against standard FFP criteria’

• Dead data = ‘hidden growth’

• BUT missing backups = ‘hidden cost’

Output includes a cost case comparing the options and a comprehensive

health check document
