Introduction to SharePointSharePoint is an extensible and scalable web-based platform consisting of tools and technologies that support the collaboration and sharing of information within teams, throughout the enterprise, and on the web.

“SharePoint improves end user productivity to Organizational Productivity” - Using SharePoint, people can set up their Web sites to share information with others, manage documents from start to finish, and publish reports to help everyone make better decisions.

SharePoint is a content management system build with an ASP.NET front end, and an XML based back end running on IIS and SQL Server as back end. SharePoint acts as the single platform to share, communicate, store, and collaborate the content, documents, and records.

The companies are going for SharePoint due to the following reasons:-

SharePoint 2013 EditionsSharePoint is available to organizations in two primary ways: -

➤ On-Premise SharePoint Deployment: With an on-premise deployment your organization builds, configures, and manages its own SharePoint environment. You can do this using many different approaches, which include maintaining your own data center or dedicated hosting in an offsite data center, partnered with a hosting provider. The main component of this type of environment is that you have full control of the environment and can deploy custom solutions without restraint.

For SharePoint on-premise, you have two options for installation:-

- SharePoint Foundation 2013 - SharePoint Server 2013

➤ Office 365 SharePoint Subscription:

Office 365 is a shared multi-tenant hosting experience where you subscribe to SharePoint services that are hosted and maintained by Microsoft in its data-center. You are given a set of guidelines around storage space and development options and must follow those within your environment. The benefits of this arrangement enable you to quickly and easily take advantage of SharePoint features without having to take on the extra overhead of managing and supporting a fully dedicated environment.

Office 365 The options for licensing SharePoint Online through Office 365 are based on factors such as the number of users you want to add, the amount of data you need to store, and the features you need to be available. In addition to the features described previously for SharePoint Foundation and SharePoint Server, Office 365 includes options for hosting your e-mail in Exchange and for making Office Professional available to your users.

Difference between an on-premise installation and an Office 365 implementation?

With an on-premise installation of SharePoint, you have full control and responsibility of the entire environment, whereas with Office 365, you are relying on services provided by Microsoft. While using Office 365 and customizations, you must follow the provided guidelines and restrictions for applications or development.

If your solutions need more access or control than allowed within Office 365, you will need to deploy an on-premise solution. You can install on-premise environments locally, or you can partner with a hosting provider to help you manage the environment.


SharePoint Wheel

SharePoint Wheel is also known as SharePoint Pie. The wheel did an effective job of helping people understand the six primary categories (or “workloads”) of functionality that SharePoint offers: sites, communities, content, search, insights, and composites. Within each of these six areas, there is a massive amount of functional and technical details, but the wheel makes the challenge of understanding the product’s capability at a high level more manageable.

Sites

SharePoint sites provide a common platform for all your business websites. SharePoint allows a user to easily and quickly provision a new site using the SharePoint browser-based interface to rapidly meet business needs. There are many types of site templates available with SharePoint depending upon the requirements: team sites, document management sites, search sites, wiki sites, and so forth. On these sites, you can accomplish many important tasks, including sharing documents with colleagues, working on team projects, publishing information to customers, and dozens more. Sites are the basic technology engine in SharePoint; they are the place where users go to get things done.

Communities

SharePoint communities enable social networking and collaboration in the enterprise. SharePoint assists in the process of working with a team of people through blogs, wikis, newsfeeds, tagging, personal sites called My Sites, and many other features. Sharing of ideas, finding and collaborating with the right people, and connecting with subject matter experts are experiences that SharePoint can help with.

Content

Document management, web content management, records management—these content-related capabilities are required at nearly every business and government organization. SharePoint provides site templates and features for each of these areas of content management. SharePoint has evolved over the years to include support not only for traditional document types such as Microsoft Office, but also for rich media files, photographs, Adobe PDF files, and many more. Close integration of the content management features with desktop productivity products ensures that much of users’ interaction with the content can still be performed naturally in the tool that they are already working in every day—Microsoft Office.

Search

SharePoint has contained search capabilities since the beginnings of the product. In the most recent versions of the product, SharePoint Search has matured into a fully functional enterprise search engine. SharePoint Search helps users discover content, people, and a wide variety of business data. The relevance and accuracy of the information returned to a user when a search query is performed is on par with any of the major Internet search engines; thus, this feature provides a compelling and valuable experience that empowers employees to perform their jobs more efficiently.

The ability to search content inside and outside of SharePoint in a rich and dynamic way with real-time document views through Office Web Apps. Also, the integration of information in structured database systems and on-premises or cloud-based LOB systems such as SAP, Siebel, and Microsoft Dynamics.

Insights Insights (also known as business intelligence) make it possible to easily access and present data stored in databases, SharePoint lists, and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Utilizing features such as Excel Services, PerformancePoint, and SQL Server Reporting integration, SharePoint enables the creation and sharing of dashboards and reports that help workers identify business trends, work together toward shared goals and metrics, and pinpoint exactly the information they need to make better decisions.

Predominantly about BI and support, for example, the capability to integrate Microsoft Access into SharePoint; leverage Excel and SQL Server to access and display data on a Web page; enable the use of dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs) to transform raw data into actionable information.

Applications that fit into the SharePoint composite model are often built in days rather than weeks or months, often with no code required. This agility is part of the business value of SharePoint—rapidly designing, building, and deploying business solutions that provide a near-instant return on investment.

Ranges from LOB integration to Office integration through the new Apps for Office application model (think HTML and JavaScript-fueled custom task panes that link to cloud services instead of VSTO managed code add-ins) to custom solution development.
