How the United States government interacts with the world affects people

around the globe.

What does this mean? Can you think of examples of how our government policies affect other countries?

You will

1.choose a specific US foreign policy:

adoption, immigration, or piracy.

2. State a position on that policy. Ask yourself, how effective is the

policy? You will evaluate a specific foreign policy based on an analysis of its causes and effects.

• Discuss how the policy affects stakeholders in the U.S.

• Discuss how the policy costs or benefits other countries.

Concepts and Vocabulary

• Foreign Policy = a policy pursued by a nation in its dealings with other nations, designed to achieve national objectives.

• Geographic perspective = A geographic perspective is a way of looking at and understanding the world. When you view the world through the lens of geography, you are asking who, what, where, and when people, places, and things are distributed across the surface of the earth.

• Cultural perspective = the customs, values, social institutions, art, music, dance, language, and traditions, that are part of a society’s culture

• Political perspective = How do groups of people make collective decisions? The term is generally applied to the running of government. Who has the authority or power and how is it used?

• Economic perspective = What does it cost and who benefits or suffers?

• Sociological perspective = What are the social patterns and how do groups interact? Think of social groups and organizations, crime, race and ethnicity, sex, gender, economic differences, education, family structure and lifestyles.

• Psychological perspective = what are the changes in behavior as a result of the environment?
