Mining & Slurry Technology

Getting pumped!

Following rapid expansion in the last few years, South African company Mining & Slurry Technology (MST) has secured a new contract

to supply top-quality pumping products in Russia, their first branch into Europe, and is currently in negotiation for new projects in the Australian and South American markets.

Eddie Lizemore, Managing Director at MST, has overseen the new business deals: “Our recent negotiations in Russia and Australia have happened in the last two months. We had an expansion

last year so we have a lot of spare capacity; we’ll stay big enough for the next couple of years here without having to expand,” he explained.

Beginning operations in 2007 as a small repairs service and pumps distributor, MST have expanded significantly in the last five years, developing their own brand of pumps to make them market leader in South Africa and exporting 60 percent of their output to surrounding African countries.

“We started off stocking two well known branded pumps”, said Lizemore. “When we acquired new engineers we started developing

Empowerment scheme in South Africa, MST are looking to improve living conditions in the black sector, training and supporting young people to become engineers, the first of which graduate in April this year. Lizemore believes that this investment with people, along with the continual investment in product development, will help him stay ahead of the opposition.

“We spend about R300,000-400,000 a month just on development and innovation which

is a huge amount for South Africa. As soon as I get a group of young engineers who are qualified I’m going to put them straight onto developing new pumps, that’s why I need to develop a pump testing station to develop this new range of pumps,“ he said.

In addition to a shortage of engineers, the company is currently facing a large scale skills shortage, with a deficit of tradesmen for the fitting and machine shop. In order to gain more employees, MST have a

them, and we got to the point where we developed our own brand. We tried to keep compatibility between the opposition pumps, so our product is fully interchangeable with other pumps in addition to having its own connections. The opposition’s pump has been developed many years ago and we managed to do a lot to make improvements to give them a better life and better performance,” he continued.

Rapid ExpansionHaving begun operations from a tiny factory the size of a dual parking lot, MST has expanded fourfold in the

past five years, investing over R10 million on upgrading its new 22,000 sq meter facility with a number of new facilities to come.

“When we moved to new premises we completely refurbished the foundry. We upped the foundry output from 10 tonnes up to 20 tonnes and put a new sand recovery plant in, so in four months of being here we improved our sand recovery and our moulding capability. We built a complete new machine shop and we are purchasing a whole new range of CNC machines soon, although we will keep the old ones,” said Lizemore.

The company are in the process of putting up a performance test bay, that can test any pump from 38mm to 406mm diameter, which will be ISO 9000 accredited. With a fitting shop and a dedicated assembly area, the company is planning to upgrade their parts storage centre, in addition to other improvements, which Lizemore predicts will cost the region of R35 million.

Investing in peopleWith 170 employees, MST is currently channelling a large proportion of resources into training engineers to further develop their product offering. Part of the Black Economic

diversity and sponsorship scheme which offers product training to staff along with on the job skills development.

“There is a terrible shortage of tradesmen in this country - we find it very difficult to find people now, especially in the machine shop and the fitting shop. That’s why we do internal and external training to get people certified. We’ve got a dedicated training centre which was completed last year,” said Lizemore.

Unique offeringsWith on-site training facilities at its factory complex, MST diversifies from its competitors by going the extra mile for customers, offering training to customers and maintenance programs for their products.

“Service and quality are what attracts our customers. We’ve got maintenance contracts with a few of our customers, where we offer a maintenance team full time on the site. That is something that will expand over the next year. We’ve also got a customer pump school, where we offer basic pump training courses every three months on our

reputation in South Africa, Lizemore is confident that MST will continue to lead the market in the next few years, by continually improving their product range and expanding their export market.

“I’m optimistic and positive about the next five years. We’ve been in this country for so long that we’ve had several ups and downs, somehow we always climb out of it. In five years time we will still be a force to be reckoned with in Africa, and I’m very positive. I believe we will expand fourfold in the next five years,” he concluded.
