Selection Criteria for Residency: Results of National Program Directors SurveyMarianne Green, MD, Paul Jones, MD, and John X. Thomas, Jr., PhDAcademic Medicine, Vol. 84, No. 3/March 2009

ConclusionsThe top academic selection criteria arebased on clinical performance, with theexception of USMLE Step 1 score.Indicators that reflect excellence inclinical performance are valued acrossthe specialties by residency programdirectors regardless of competitivenesswithin the specialty. USMLE Step 2 CKranks higher in the less competitivespecialties, whereas research experienceis more prominent in the mostcompetitive specialties. The MedicalStudent Performance Evaluation wasranked lowest of all criteria by theprogram directors.
