1. Ashley wrote these instructions. o Turn off the Bruce Highway at the lights at Monkland Street and River Terrace. o Follow the road for 1.4 km across the Kidd Bridge until Gympie North State School which is on the

left and Gympie Race Course is on the right. o Turn right into Glastonbury Road and drive 5.6 km until you get to The Palms Drive on the right. o Turn right and go until you get to Felicity Road on the right. o Turn right into Felicity Road. My house is at the end on the right-hand side.

Are these instructions correct? If not, fix the mistakes to make them correct. 2. You are to:

a. Construct a mud map that shows the location of at least 5 points of interest in Koo Wee Rup, for example, historical sites, favourite café, sporting facility, etc.

b. Write instructions on how to get there from Koo Wee Rup Secondary College. Include distances.

3. Tyler is a member of the Gympie Historical Steam Trains Club. Next weekend history and steam train enthusiasts are coming to Gympie to ride on, and photograph, the Mary Valley Heritage Railway. Tyler constructed the mud map on the previous page to help visitors to the area find good photography sites and other interesting local attractions.

a. Why do you think Tyler showed some schools and parks on the map? b. Why did Tyler show two compass bearings on each section of the road? c. How are the bearings in each pair of directions related to each other?

4. On the map a distance of 1 centimetre represents 72 metres. Explain how you can calculate that the length of the historical walking tour is approximately 2.7 kilometres.

5. Asha thinks that typical tourists on this tour will walk at an average speed of 2 km/h and they will stop at each building for 5 minutes.

a. Calculate the approximate time in hours and minutes typical tourists will take to walk the tour if they don’t stop to look at the buildings.

b. Estimate the total time typical tourists will spend looking at buildings. Explain your answer. c. Approximately how long do you think Asha should tell tourists to allow for this walking tour?

6. Use the second copy of the Gympie Historical Walk map. Asha has some photographs of buildings on the walk (see below). On the map she would like to show the places where she took the photos. Show the places where the photos were taken on the map.

A This photograph of the Catholic Cathedral was taken from a place on a bearing of 340°T from the Cathedral

7. Another tourist agent, Thomas thinks that some tourists might like a shorter walking tour. On the Gympie Historical Walk map, show a shorter tour on the map. Include details of the length of the walk and the approximate time tourists should allow to complete the tour.

Touring Maps Australia is a vast, open country and distances between neighbouring towns can be huge. Distances between locations can be located from information shown on touring maps. Use the mud map to answer the following questions. All distances are in kilometres.

8. How far is it from Kingaroy to Wulful? 9. Calculate the distance from Oakey to Kumbia. 10. How much further is it to travel from Dalby to Wulful via Toowoomba than via Quialow? 11. Kyla takes 2 hours to ride her bike from Kumbia to Dalby. Calculate her average speed. 12. How long will it take to travel from Chinchilla to Oakey at an average speed of 71 km/h? 13. Before Andrew left Kingaroy to drive to Toowoomba he set his car’s tripometer to zero. Between

which two places was he when the tripometer showed that he had travelled 68 km? 14. What is Andrew’s fuel consumption (2 dp) if he uses 13 litres of petrol for the trip?

G Renovated terraces from east of the terraces H The Mosiac amphitheatre taken from a spot on a bearing of 260°T from the amphitheatre

15. When Sam left Moonie her car’s odometer showed 062 453. What was the odometer’s reading when she arrived in Chinchilla?

16. Sam’s car has a fuel consumption of 6.2 L/100km. How many litres of fuel did she use on this trip? 17. If petrol costs 106.8c per litre, how much will the trip cost (in dollars) her in petrol? 18. This table shows some of the distances between Augathella, Charleville, Cunnamulla, Mitchell, Morvan

and Roma. The mud map below shows the relative positions of the locations.

a. Use the distances in the table to write the distances between locations on the mud map. b. Complete the missing values in the table.

Hervey Bay Whales Humpback whales migrate each winter up the east coast of Australia from Antarctica to the warm tropical waters off the coast of Queensland, to breed. The whales spend several months each year in the water near Hervey Bay. Many tourists like to go whale watching. You will need the Whale watch map. 19. This mud map shows some of the locations near Hervey Bay. All distances are in kilometres.

a. How far is it from Bundaberg to Hervey Bay? b. How long will it take to drive from Bundaberg to Hervey Bay at an average speed of 80 km/h?

Express your answer in hours and minutes. 20. At what time do you recommend Ben should leave Bundaberg to catch an 8am whale watch boat to

Hervey Bay? Explain your answer.

21. A pod of whales swim at an average speed of 8 km/h during their 6000km migration. How long does it take them to complete the trip?

22. Adult humpback whales are the fifth largest mammal on Earth. A large humpback whale can have a mass of 40 tonnes. How many students with an average mass of 70 kg have a mass equivalent to one 40 tonne whale (round to nearest whole number)?

23. Baby whales are born in tropical waters and their mothers feed them milk. Whale milk is very rich. It is 35% fat. How many litres of fat are contained in 250 litres of whale milk?

24. Baby whales increase their weight by 27kg daily and increase their length by 26cm monthly. A baby whale weighed 1 tonne and was 4.8 m long when she was born at the beginning of July. Estimate her weight and length when she and her mother left Hervey Bay at the end of October to swim back to Antarctica.

25. What town on the Whale watch map is located at map reference B5? 26. Platypus Bay is the best place near Hervey Bay to see whales. Suggest a map reference for Platypus

Bay. 27. Will and Rebecca went on a whale watch trip from Hervey Bay. When the boat left Boat Harbour, it

headed towards Rooney Point. What is the true bearing that the boat will use to navigate there? 28. Calculate the distance as the ‘crow flies’ between Boat Harbour and Rooney Point. 29. When Michael was checking the light at the top of Cape Sandy Light House, he saw a pod of whales

15 km on a bearing of S53°W of the light house. Show the position of the pod of whales on the map. 30. The first pod of whales that Will and Rebecca saw on their cruise was 20 km from Arch Cliffs and 15

km from Rooney Point. a. What length on the map represents 20 km? b. Put the point of the compass on Arch Cliffs and open the compass to the length representing

20 km? Draw a circle in the water, representing places 20 km from Arch Cliffs. c. Put the point of the compass on Rooney Point and open the compass to a length representing

15 km. Draw another circle on the map. This circle represents places 15 km from Rooney Point. d. Draw an X on the place where the two circles cross. This is the position of the whales. e. What is the map reference of the position of the whales? f. What is true bearing of the whales from Rooney Point? g. What is the quadrant bearing of the whales from Arch Cliffs?

31. Will watched the whales swim 15 km on a bearing of 283°T from their position above. Show the route along which the whales swim and where they are now.

Cody and Katie’s Holiday Cody and Katie love travelling around outback Australia in their old 4-wheel-drive truck. Their recent holiday started at the Queensland-New South Wales border at Hungerford. You will need to use the ‘Around Cunnamulla’ map on the following page to help you. 32. Cody saw this sign at the Queensland-New South Wales border. In what

direction was Cody facing when he saw the sign?
