GEORGIA TECH SUSTAINABILITY SHOWCASE 2019 Getting “Big Research” Ready

Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design

October 28-30, 2019

Context:

Most faculty and students are unaware of the breadth of sustainability research and education

ongoing at Georgia Tech, and few external sponsors understand the breadth and depth.

• As of June 2019, there are more than 300 active sustainability relevant projects ongoing at

Georgia Tech, representing more than $100MM in externally sponsored research led by more

than 180 unique principal investigators. See Figure 1 and appendices.

• In the 2018/2019 Academic Year, 160 courses were affiliated with Serve-Learn-Sustain taught by

112 unique instructors. See Figure 2 and appendices.

Individual PI and small collaborative sustainability relevant research investigations are

succeeding, but large collaborative sustainability relevant research efforts are underperforming.

• Sustainability relevant research projects account for 9% of all active research projects, but only

5% of all award funding.

• The average funded award size of all active research projects is $680,547, while the average size

of active sustainability relevant research projects is $362,028.

Georgia Tech’s researchers are actively addressing the biggest of the big sustainability problems

(e.g., global warming, environmental justice, clean water and food, renewable energy), but…

Big problems need BIG RESEARCH!

Objectives of the Showcase:

• To assemble, catalogue, make accessible, and make available a complete portfolio of

sustainability relevant research and education programs, projects, courses, personnel,

and sponsors ongoing at Georgia Tech inclusive of all 6 Colleges, GTRI, the 11

Interdisciplinary Research Institutes, and all other Centers and Laboratories;

• To increase internal and external awareness of individual and organizational interests,

capabilities, and accomplishments in sustainability relevant research and education;

• To foster and strengthen collaborative and pre-collaborative relationships among

investigators, prospective partners, and with potential sponsors;

• To increase research readiness by streamlining team building and proposal

development; and

• To provide tangible products (e.g., portfolios, videos, whitepapers, databases, contacts,

lists) to investigators and instructors that can be leveraged for direct and immediate

personal and professional benefit.

Desired Outcomes:

For faculty:

• Participating faculty will connect with other faculty (prospective collaborators), students

(prospective research assistants), and representatives from external organizations

(prospective sponsors and partners).

• Faculty will be better prepared to develop highly competitive proposals, especially large

centers and training grants (i.e., > $1MM and involving two or more units AND five or

more investigators).

• Faculty will shape the direction of Georgia Tech’s sustainability research and education

strategy AND investments.

For Georgia Tech:

• Administrators (e.g., President, Provost, EVPR, Deans, School Chairs, IRI Directors) will

be better advised how to support and leverage sustainability research and education

activities.

• Strategies will emerge that capitalize on past successes, current capabilities, and future

aspirations.

• Networks and “network effects” among individuals, groups, projects, courses, ideas,

trends, partners, and sponsors will reveal “Institutional-scale” strengths and

weaknesses.

• Insight will be gained re: sponsor funding (Who? How much? In support of what?) and

student interest (Courses? Curriculum? Pedagogy? Instructors?).

4

For external partners:

• Partners will be introduced to the full scope and scale of ongoing sustainability research

and education, and the individuals, teams, and next generation of talent conducting it.

• Partners can provide input on the direction of Georgia Tech’s sustainability research and

education strategy AND investments.

• Partners may encounter insight that is useful for strategic positioning in new or growing

markets or for leveraging their own assets and activities.

For students:

• Students will connect with faculty conducting research or teaching courses of mutual

interest, and with prospective future employers.

• Students will help shape the direction of Georgia Tech’s sustainability research and

education strategy AND investments.

Other benefits:

• Introduction of the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design (aka, Living

Building) as a unique campus asset for enabling sustainability research and education.

Structure / Format:

• 3 Full days: Monday October 28 – Wednesday October 30, 2019, subdivided into 6 half

day sessions:

1a. People: Health, Wealth, Wellbeing, Equity, Ethics, Socioeconomics, Behavior,

Culture, Education, Metrics

1b. Organizations and Institutions: Governance, Decision Making, Planning,

Regulation, Investment, Markets

2a. Natural Systems: Atmosphere, Oceans, Water, Biodiversity, Climate, Weather,

Natural Resources

2b. Built Systems: Cities, Transportation, Power and Energy, Water, Data and

Communications, Food and Agriculture, Buildings, Landscape

3a. Technologies: Manufacturing, Construction, Design, Engineering, Computing,

Operations, Logistics

3b. Future Vision: invited (TBD)

• Individual TED-style or Lightening talks: main stage; 5 to 15 minutes; highly engaging

story-form; general audience; well-rehearsed; high quality / professionally recorded;

archived and widely shared via all web and social media channels; provided to speaker

at no charge and free of any usage restrictions

5

• Panel discussions: side rooms; concurrent with TED-talks; goal: generate whitepapers

• Networking lunches, breaks, receptions: maximize “collisions;” small group interactions

(2-5 people); socialization is as important as scientific exchange

• Keynote speakers (n=3 to 6): main stage; 30 minutes; visionaries/experts/provocateurs
