address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pente-cost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency:

Believing, Belonging, Becoming and Branching Out
May 2018
Dear Friends,
You are receiving this May newsletter a little early, which gives us the opportunity to share the excite-
ment about two important and exciting events at the end of April.
First, the Children's Choir will be presenting a "dinner theater" style musical at 6:15 on Wednesday
April 25. You can come for a delicious spaghetti dinner from 5:30 - 6:15, served by the Fellowship
Committee in the fellowship hall, and stay for the musical, or come at 6:10 and take an available seat
in the fellowship hall. The musical "I Am A Promise!" is directed by Terri Queen and has a great
message. It is on my calendar and I hope it will be on yours.
For almost 20 years now members of CPC have traveled to southernmost
Mexico to engage in important and meaningful mission experiences. Our
members have led Bible schools, taught, learned, mixed cement and even
gotten married (!) there. As part of our mission tithe this year CPC donated
$12,500 to support the health clinic that some of our members helped build
in Ocasingo. The leaders of this Presbyterian ministry are Pablo Feliciano
- Cruz and his wife Jan. Their ministry is a powerful and far-reaching
one. The Session has invited Pablo to preach in our worship services on
April 29th and to share about this ministry during the 9:30 education
hour. When I first met with the Session of CPC, in Carole and Jimmy Kausch's backyard, I remem-
ber Russ Vroom telling me about his learning to sleep in a hammock on one of these trips to Mexi-
co. It was quite a story! We are also participating with other churches in the Presbytery to send
folks this year. The Mission Committee will help fund your travel costs. Please speak with Diane
Hightower, Tracey or Jeff Martin or me if you are interested in learning more.
Mother's Day is always a big day in worship and it will be even bigger this
year when our mission partner in Taiwan and my friend John McCall visits
with us in both services and in the 9:30 education hour. John is a teacher
at the Taiwan seminary and works with indigenous pastors throughout the
island. John served as the Pastor of the Black Mountain Presbyterian
Church and the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, where
he served on a Presbytery committee with me. He is a great preacher
with an inspiring message. This is a Sunday to bring your Mom and the
whole family and friends to the worship service and the 9:30 education hour!
We got back last week from visiting our son Jacob in San Francisco. We found this child of our
church well and happy being a scientist in a beautiful city.
Faithfully yours,
Bill

Habitat for Humanity May 12. Please mark your calendars now and go on the Habitat Forsyth volunteer website to register to spend a terrific Saturday with your CPC family building or renovating a house for a needy family. Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that helps provide safe and decent housing for fami-lies. Our own Bob Geyer was one of the first dozen people that started Habitat in Americus, Georgia in the 1970’s. Now almost 10 million habitat homes have been built, mostly by volunteers, around the world. Habitat Forsyth has built 385 homes since 1985. Families must provide “sweat equity” by working on their own or anoth-
er Habitat House. Families may then purchase the house with a no interest loan by participating in home ownership classes. What will we be doing? Painting, hammering, tearing out, caulking, rak-ing, roofing, flooring? We really won’t know until the time we arrive because of the work completed by the volunteers the days and weeks before us. Habitat provides all the tools you need, but has some suggestions on the volunteer website where you have to go to register. If you have questions, please contact Bill Hoyle.
Our next blood drive will be Thursday, May 10, from 2:30-7:00 PM. The drive is
now “live” on the Red Cross website, meaning anyone can sign up. If you have a time
slot you prefer, you might want to sign up now before someone else gets it. The sign
up sheet is on the bulletin board outside the choir room. You can also sign up at
www.redcrossblood.org or on the Red Cross blood donor app (free at your app store).
May 1, 2018 Hope du Jour returns to help Crisis Control. Eat out for a good cause! Have breakfast, lunch or dinner at one of the many local restau-rants that donate 10% of their sales to Crisis Control Ministries. CPC has been a long-time supporter of CCM. GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS from the Con-nection Team of the Together in Faith Capital Cam-paign! The new 3 year campaign has started off with a bang. Our generous First Fruits Offering received in December effectively steered us in the right direc-tion. These early funds have allowed the church to make a nice principal reduction payment on the debt for our new fellowship hall – which in turn reduces our interest expenses. We must keep up the good work by keeping our pledges current. If you were unable to make a commitment to the campaign, please remember to give when you can, as every dollar counts. Whether paying to-wards your pledge or giving when you can, please make sure to mark your checks or online contri-butions “Capital Fund” so your gift will be accounted for as you intended. Remember, through Christ, all things are possible. Thank you for your support!
To our bookkeeper, Inessa Sarkisov, for 16 years of service.
To our office manager, Megan, who got married on April 22nd and is now Mrs. Megan Gwaltney.

This year, it will be held in our new fellowship hall on Wednesday, May 16th at 6:30 PM following dinner. Thank You To the wonderful staff and congregation of Clemmons Presbyterian Church.
Debbie enjoyed a very full church life at CPC, worshiping and socializing with loving friends, teach-ing Bible studies and singing in the choir that she so loved.
Thank you all for your tenderness and hospitality shown to me, our family, and all our visiting friends as we celebrated Debbie’s life on Friday and Saturday.
Keeping you all in my prayers,
F.M. Hagan
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you Clemmons Presbyterian Church for your concern, prayers, and good wishes. The food, telephone calls, visit, etc. have been so important to me following my surgery and recovery. I look forward to being able to return to worship with you very soon. Thank you again for being the caring congregation I know and love.

Christian Education
On May 6 the second graders of CPC will receive a Bible from the church. These young people have been participating in a 3 week class where they learned Bible basics such as how the Bible is organized, the Pentateuch, the Gospels, and how to use the Bible during worship. We are grateful to their parents for supporting their children as they learn and we are excited that they are more comfortable with the Bible and more confident in how to use the Bible as a tool to nurture their Chris-tian life and faith. The second graders receiving Bibles this year are Caleb Klinger, Adeline Sullivan, Anna Hedrick, and Sarah Zacharias.
Summer Sunday School: May 20 is the last day of our regular Christian Education Sunday
school schedule. There is no Sunday school on May 27 (Memorial Day). The summer schedule will
begin on June 3. There will be two adult classes. The Bible Study class will continue to study The
Present Word in room 206. The summer Sunday class will meet in 301-C. There will be Sunday
school for children as well.
New Way to Connect to the church and each other. Clemmons Presbyterian Church has been using a data-base program called ACS for over 17 years. As times and technology has changed, we have realized the im-portance for members, leaders, elders, and staff to com-municate information to each other in a timely manner. In doing this we have moved to a new system with ACS called REALM. REALM is a database just like ACS but now the members can connect to each other, see their giving statements in real time, and be able to reply to their ministry groups directly to the whole group through RSVP, resources, and messaging each other. It is similar to Facebook, the white pages, and a giving accounting system – but much simpler. Do you have an address change? You can do it yourself. Need to contact someone? You can look it up through REALM. On May 14th you will receive an email inviting you to join the REALM community of Clemmons Pres-byterian Church. Please check your spam folder in case it went in there. Once you receive that email log in with your email address and create your own password. You will officially be part of REALM. I will be holding a training session in May to help people navigate through the program. Please look in the announcement sheet for upcoming training sessions. If you need help with REALM please email [email protected]. REALM will be the main way we communicate things. Come and join us on the new way of collabo-rating to share the love of Jesus. A Note From Patrick McElwaine
CPC Youth Endowment Scholarship
There were 3 outstanding applicants for the Clemmons Presbyterian Church Youth Endowment Scholarship this year. After making some tough decisions, the Board of Trustees (Marv Dickerson, Leighton McGill, Elizabeth Morris, Frankie Muse and Charlie Stone) selected Laura Cain to receive a $3,000 scholarship. Marv Dickerson, presi-dent of the Board, presented the check to Laura during the Sunday April 8, 10:45 service. The Board agreed that all three applicants will be successful in their chosen endeavors.
The CPC Office will be closed on Monday, May 28th in observance of the
Memorial Day Holiday.
Wishing you a happy and safe holiday!
Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, and named it Ebenezer; for
he said, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” - 1 Samuel 7:12
The other morning while I was praying the most unexpected words popped into my head. Without
realizing it, I suddenly found myself saying, “OK God, you’ve gotten me this far. This prayer is my
Ebenezer.” It must have been the Spirit because those words surprised even me as they came out
of my mouth.
Perhaps you’re familiar with the term “Ebenezer,” and when I say that I don’t mean “Scrooge.”
Ebenezer is the name of a monument that Samuel raised to remember a time where God helped
him and the Israelites out of a tough situation. Samuel called on God for help and God answered. In
thanksgiving, Samuel set up a monument so the people would always remember and he named it
Ebenezer, which in Hebrew means “stone of help.”
I wonder if we follow Samuel’s lead often enough. How do we share reminders of God’s faithfulness
and steadfast care with the world? Not that setting up physical monuments everywhere is a good
idea, but what about our stories? Are we open and vulnerable enough with others to share the sto-
ries of how God has been present in our lives? Stories of how God has helped us through when life
was at its most difficult?
These stories are powerful and they are important. Think of a moment where God has been present
in your life. What would it look like for you to “set up” your own Ebenezer?
Yours in Christ,
Patrick
