What’s that Madam President ? My Dear Friends……..

I am so grateful that I have this means of

communication with you all (thanks Denise!)

while we are under Stay at Home orders.

So here we all are, stuck at home with 100s of

yards of fabric at our disposal and our quilt

show on the horizon. I have several UFOs,

some that really deserve to be finished, and a

whole Kaffe Fassett collection that I brought

home from Road, calling out to me. If we make

good use of this Sheltering in Place time,

we will have the most spectacular show ever!

This social distancing goes against the grain of

quilters. Just think of our pioneer foremothers

who counted on a Quilting Bee and a Barn

Raising event for sharing quality time with

neighbors. A new bride or a preacher leaving

the community were reason enough for a get

together to create a special homemade gift.

Maybe that is where the adage “many hands

make light work” came from. .

Our Opportunity Quilt is usually a group

effort of this type, and goes home with a

prize winner This Stay at Home order can

drive a lot of people crazy, but for us, it is

permission to sew up a storm! Of course,

this means you must keep your sewing

machine in tip top shape. I hope to do a

Short Subject on this topic soon. I recently

serviced a Featherweight for a lady who was

making masks. I can’t wait for our next

meeting and to see the “show and tell” you

will bring to share. Years from now, when we

look back at this time, I hope you will

remember how our nation complied with the

important rules of social distancing to save

many lives. Working together as a nation we

were successful in keeping the number of

victims down. That is the true American spirit

A Little Message

From Our

Vice-Presidents …

How is everyone doing? Little did we know at the start of 2020 that our quilting

would be considered a survival skill and our stash was advance planning. I’m sure

we have all been making masks. Our quilting also is helping keep our sanity. How

many UFO’s have we been able to finish?

I, for one, am hoping we can start meeting again sometime in May. We will let

you know when all of our cancelled events are rescheduled.

If we are able to meet, for our May 12 program meeting will be Barbara Wegener

sharing her quilting journey and trunk show. It will be good to get to know her

better. Everyone has an interesting quilting journey. If we are not able to meet,

we will reschedule her trunk show.

June brings us Lisa Thorpe with her "Surface Design" presentation on June 9th and

her "Gelli Printing to Art Quilt in a Day" class on June 10th. Lisa blends art quilting

with modern quilting for a unique style all her own. Her class is a variety of printing,

stamping and painting to create wonderful fabrics to use in quilting. It all sounds

like a lot of fun. You will find her at lisathorpe.com

On July 14, we will be having a “Quilt University” again. There will be 10-15 minutes

sessions on different techniques. Bring your long attention span and your

notebook for all of the learning fun. When we quit learning, we quit growing.

Lauretta Crites will join us on Saturday, July 18 for the class “Quilt Coloring Fun”. I

have wanted to learn how to color on fabric with colored pencils and other

mediums so this will be a wonderful class.

Sign up sheets for all of the above classes will be on the membership table at our meetings until the class.

All of the classes listed above are held at McHenry Bowl starting at 9 am unless

otherwise noted.

Crossroads Chatter May 2020 Issue

Since we do not have any minutes to share, Ann decided to give us all a challenge …

Ready for Another Guild Challenge? In recent weeks most of us have been whittling down our UFO's, digging into our towering stashes, and making masks, and now is the time to generate some fresh inspiration! Therefore I'm introducing a new challenge for our members to work on between now and our big show in January 2021. This brilliant idea is the brainchild of our beloved Paddy Shopher.

Bucket List Challenge! Design a quilt that portrays an adventure, endeavor, or accomplishment that's important to you. What are you still waiting for the opportunity to do? It can be something practical or something dreamy. Something that takes practice and study, or something that just takes logistics and time. Start by thinking, "If anything is possible, I'd like to _______".

I hope you have fun with this challenge and we're able to display an interesting exhibit at our show! We'll be able to talk more about it once we meet again, but for now here are some details to get you going.

Bucket List Challenge specifications:

Width: 15" Height: 24"

Edge: Your choice! Quilt Techniques: Your choice!

Readiness to be challenged? Yes we are!

Any Questions? Call Ann Sweet 209.480.6020 or email her [email protected]

It is time to start thinking about how you can

prepare a raffle basket for the quilt show. You may

do a basket by yourself, with friends, your mini-

group. These baskets bring in extra revenue for the

guild. Here are some of the themes you might

consider: wine, chocolate, baby, cat, dog,

outdoor garden, game night, spa day, boy toys,

(grown up as well as a different one for child), girl

toys, sewing basket, golf, and your own

idea. Please think about how you would like to

participate and then sign up next time there is a

meeting and I will pass a clip board around.

Or, Virtual ly S ign-up by letting Ursula know

electronically (email, phone or text) that you

and/or your group will be donating a basket for the

Quits of Honor Sizes Size: 50" by 60" is the preferred size. 60" by 70" is

the largest we can accept. These sizes are

standardized so that: 1. They must fit in a flat rate

box; and 2. Recipients all receive close to the

same size. Also keep in mind that these should

be Patriotic in nature and NO juvenile Patriotic

fabric.

We really appreciate all your help.

Ursula Sylvan, with Gayle Belmont’s approval

It Seams Like Murder Mystery The Case of the starry-eyed Quilter

By Mammy Grammy’s Studios

Super Easy - Finished Quilt Size: 48” x 61”

FABRIC:

The first thing you will want to do is to decide what fabrics to choose for your quilt. This is an easy quilt and is a great way to use up your

scraps and it makes a great Birthday Quilt*. Start by picking a theme or personality. Ask yourself,” Who do you want to make this quilt for?”

Will it be a baby quilt with sweet pastels and baby prints? A little boy’s quilt with tractors? A teenager’s quilt with a modern flair? A guy’s quilt in browns and blues? A Halloween quilt, a patriotic quilt, etc. Will it be loud and proud or soft and quiet? Will it have a modern feel or something more traditional? Mono chromatic? Deciding which direction you are going with this quilt so that you can pick out your fabrics is half the battle. If you have any questions or just want to run something by me, email me at [email protected] with “Mystery

Quilt Question” in the subject line. *A Birthday Quilt is a quilt each member donates to Warm Wrappings the month of that member’s

birthday.

Now it’s time to go shopping (in your stash or your favorite quilt shop) for fabrics that fit this feel/theme/personality …

You will need the following fabrics:

Quilt Center

The best results for the finished quilt is if your Light Background and your Medium-Light Background fabrics

are both neutrals with one being slightly darker enough so that they don’t get totally lost in one another.

Light Background 1 ¼ yd. (I am using a white-on-white)

Medium-Light Background ¾ yd. (I am using a light gray)

The next two fabrics will work best if they are small to small-medium prints or fabrics that read solid from a distance. Scraps and fat quarters work well for these fabrics.

(6) Medium Fabrics 6” x 18”/ea.

(6) Medium Dark Fabrics 6” x 18”/ea.

Border* ¾ yd. (I am using the Light Background fabric)

Backing* 2 ¾ yd.

Binding* ½ yd.

*I like to wait before selecting my 3Bs (Borders, Backing and Binding) until the quilt top is finished so that I can ‘audition’ my quilt top with my selections.
