———————— WORDS: Nur Elfira Ayu Binte Syed Sulaiman (2E2) & Siti Farlinah Binte Norman (2E3)

    ZEST

ZEST has evolved from being merely an annual talent show that took up an assembly period to becoming a full fledged arts festival attended by nearly 1000 people. This made it such a special accomplishment; one that I will never ever forget.

The road to this arts and music festival was not an easy one. Some challenges we faced included budget and time constraints. It was a major event and there were many things that we wanted to do to make the event as memorable as possible for everyone. However, it was not possible to splurge on certain things and we had to work within our budget and that meant foregoing certain things we had in mind. There were also real time constraints as we had to juggle between planning for ZEST and studying for our examinations. It was definitely a struggle trying to commit to ZEST and yet stay focused on our studies.

ZEST 2018 was very different as the audience included members of the public. What we had in mind was to have a platform where our own students could showcase their talent fully, thus pushing them to step out of their comfort zones. Many of the performers were very thankful for ZEST as it was a stepping stone for them to be courageous and to perform confidently. Besides musical performances, artists in our school presented their works as well. It was really a beautiful collaboration.

WORDS: Nurdarina Binte Abdul Manaf (2E4) & Nur Batrisyia Binte Azman (2E3) & Syafiqa Quraisyah Binte Muhammad Nabil (2N2)

Bagi membuat keadaan lebih meriah, ko n s e r t i t u d i m u l a k a n d e n g a n s e b u a h persembahan Dikir Barat yang penuh bertenaga.

    s k i t y a n g dibahagikan kepada adegan-adegan kecil.

    perbelanjaan sehar ian mereka. Skit itu telah m e n g a j a r k a m i a g a r m e n o l o n g orang yang

    k u r a n g berkemampuan.

    MATHEMATICS WEEK

    ———————— AN INTERACTIVE

    MATHEMATICS WEEK ————————

WORDS: Lee Ying Zhe, Melvern (3E4) & Alicia Leong Tian En (3E4)

During the Mathematics Week, each class was required to send two groups to participate in the

eagerly anticipated annual Inter-Class Mathematics Competition. The competition was also one of the main highlights of the week. The aim of the programme was to build confidence in students and to foster interests in mathematics in a fun and engaging environment.

As fellow participants of the secondary 3 level competition, we felt that the competition was interesting and educational. It allowed us to be able to recall the many mathematical concepts that we have learnt throughout the years, and to apply them to real

    world problems.

It was conducted in an interactive way, where the groups were given questions and problems to solve. To add more intensity to the competition, a time limit was set for the groups to brainstorm and come up with the

right solution and answers. The audience also got to play a big part in this exciting experience. They were given the chance to participate by keying in their own answers online.

The final score was aggregated from both groups and

the audience. Every member of the audience was eager to find out who the champion was.

The overall event was a great experience because it also allowed us to work together in our teams and strengthen the bonds between our classmates. This

year’s Mathematics Week was an enjoyable, unique and innovative experience. We look forward to next year’s competition!

    RACIAL HARMONY DAY

    ———————— A SUCCESSFUL RACIAL

    HARMONY DAY ————————

WORDS: Aurelia Kimi Lee Lynn (3E4)

Racial Harmony Day is an important day for us to pause and ponder on our efforts to maintain peace and harmony amongst the different races. Zhenghua Secondary celebrated this day by allowing students to wear their ethnic

costumes to school. Many students exchanged costumes with their friends.

For the assembly programme, a drama company put up a show for everyone to appreciate the importance of racial harmony.

To round off the day, there was a Best Dressed teacher competition. The students were very excited and cheered their teachers on.

Racial Harmony Day 2018 was truly a success!

    ———————— WARNA-WARNI HARI KEHARMONIAN KAUM

———————— WORDS: Nur Elfira Ayu Binte Syed Sulaiman (2E2) & Siti Farlinah Binte Norman (2E3)

    SECONDARY 2 LITERATURE DRAMA PROGRAMME

    ———————— LITERATURE COMES ALIVE

    ———————— WORDS: Ching Zonghan (2E3)

The secondary 2 literature drama programme was conducted from June to August. It is an annual workshop that all secondary 2 students get to participate in as they gain greater insights and appreciation of their literature text, The Play of George Orwell’s Animal Farm by Peter Hall.

On the first day, the students learn simple theatre language such as

‘blocking’, which is directions for actors; where to stand and move, and ‘masking’, which is when one actor stands in front of another, blocking the audience’s view. We also learned the correct breathing techniques and how to correctly project our voice. In the subsequent days, we were assigned our different roles and pages to practice expressing our

emotions to the audience. On the actual day of the performance, most of us were quite nervous as we knew that our efforts were being assessed and we did not want to perform poorly in front of our classmates.

Through this experience, the students not only achieved the aim of the programme but also gained valuable lessons and learned how to step

out of their comfort zones. They were able to put together a great performance for their classmates and for the teachers to enjoy. We asked some secondary 2 students how they felt about the programme and what did they learn through the experience. Below are some of their reflections:

    ———————— URBAN CHALLENGE GOES OUTDOORS

———————— WORDS: Teo Kai Lin, Megan Goh, Ain Asyura Bte Ramli & Renuga Devi Lucy A. Loganathan (3T1) On Friday, 20 July 2018, we had our annual outdoor event called Urban Challenge. Many were looking

forward to the event. However, what was even more exciting for us was that our class, 3T1, had been planning for this event several weeks earlier.

It was not an easy process to plan a major event but we managed to plan and help our teachers run the whole event smoothly. We were in charge of the logistics, planning the routes and acting as road marshals on the day itself.   We felt a sense of pride and joy as our teachers trusted us to provide us this opportunity.

On the actual day, we thought that Urban Challenge had to be cancelled due to the wet weather. However, the event went on as planned. As the organisers, we had to learn to adapt. Our road marshals had to ensure safety and that the participants were going on the right route. Some participants fell and suffered injuries so we had to be on the alert to help them.

Towards the middle part of the event, the skies cleared. This was good as our ‘Fun Run’ could take place as planned. This was where all the teachers and students came together t to complete the 2.4km walk-a-jog.

Finally, the day ended with the prize giving ceremony. Some of us were hard at work picking up litter to keep the park clean. This year’s Urban Challenge was indeed a challenge to carry out, especially with it being outdoors. Although it was hectic, it was fun and unforgettable for us to be able to run the event.

    CABARAN KOTA: LARIAN BERSAING ————————

WORDS: Nur Elfira Ayu Binte Syed Sulaiman (2E2) & Siti Farlinah Binte Norman (2E3)

———————— WORDS: Nur Elfira Ayu Binte Syed Sulaiman (2E2) & Siti Farlinah Binte Norman (2E3)

    NATIONAL DAY

    ———————— A GREAT

    NATIONAL DAY ————————

WORDS: Ching Zonghan (2E3) & Hayden Chong Yi Feng (2E3)

The day started with a heavy downpour which later became a light

drizzle. Everyone was worried that the parade would be cancelled and they would not have something to remember. However, that did not dampen the spirits of the uniformed

groups and the band troupe as they were all up and ready by 7a.m.

All of the classes were at their designated areas to witness the parade at 7.30am. The parade started

off with the loud commands of the parade commander . Th is was followed by the introduction of the parade personnel and the singing of the national anthem, followed by

    pledge-taking.

Then came the part that everybody was waiting for- the march past. One by one , the un i formed group members marched past our principal,

Mr Lin, while saluting the flags behind him. All the uniformed groups did a great job in resisting the temptation to fidget, staying in perfect form even though they were marching and

    standing in the rain.

After the parade, we headed to our classes for attendance-taking after which we moved off to participate in the carnival. All the students started

rushing down to the booths which were set up by the different CCAs. Some interesting booths were NCC and Soccer as they featured video games. Our Netball girls did henna

hand-painting. All proceeds raised were donated to the Community Chest. It was a great way to celebrate National Day indeed!

I felt excited as we have been training for a long period of time. All the hard work would be showcased on National Day. I felt the pride of my own country and representing it. With my

other squadmates, it made it more enjoyable and fun!

    SECONDARY 3 ML DRAMA PROGRAMME

    SAMBUTAN HARI GURU

———————— WORDS: Nurdarina Binte Abdul Manaf (2E4) & Nur Insyirah Adriana Binte Sapawe (2E1)

‘Castle on The Hill’ oleh Ed Sheeran. Penonton terkejut apabila Mr Derrick Lim, guru Muzik kami mula untuk bernyanyi bersama mereka. Persembahan seterusnya oleh seorang pelajar Menengah 3 bernama Josh mendendangkan

lagu ‘You Raise Me Up’ bersama Mr Andrew, guru Fizik kami.

mer iah seka l i .

———————— WORDS: Ellisya Sabrina Putri Jasni (2E1) & Nur Insyirah Adriana Binte Sapawe (2E1)

TAPESTRY: A JOURNEY OF JOINED EFFORTS

  • ISSUE 2 • 2018 22

    MUSICAL: TAPESTRY

    Drama

If I could describe the journey of this musical in one word, it would be

‘strong’. The preparation for Tapestry was not easy and in particular, Drama Club was the main focus because we

were the ‘glue’ that weaved all the performances together through a

story. This process made us stronger as we were going through this

together and learnt to understand one another‘s difficulties throughout

    all the rehearsals.

    – Jazleena Bte Johari (3N1)

    Dance

Tapestry 2018 was an exhilarating journey. It is amazing to see the 6 different Aesthetics CCAs

come together to produce a cultural and stunning piece of work. We worked as a team

and pulled through it together, putting our best foot forward to represent Dance well,

even if it takes long, tiring hours of repeating our steps over again and again.

    MUSICAL: TAPESTRY

    Band

It was a really fun journey even though everyone had different schedules and we were busy as the exams were near. Even

though there were some challenges along the way, we persevered and faced

    those challenges as a group.

    - Ernst Chua Jun Wei (3E1)

    Handbells

Rehearsals for Tapestry were quite tiring yet

fulfilling. We had to put in our very best not just for the actual performance

but for all the rehearsals. Although it was a tiring

process, the production is well worth the effort!
