Dear Friends,

I hope everyone is enjoying the first few months of 2018. We all know that summer will be here

before we know it and SF Rec & Park is here to help you plan! This summer, we are offering more than

90 different camps to keep your children busy and active.

We’re bringing back some old-time favorites like Silver Tree and Pine Lake but we are also excited to

debut some new camps. The Trail Blazers Biking Camp will teach participants the basics of BMX and

Mountain Biking at our new McLaren Bike Park. Camp Sukahica, our revamped Waterfont camp, will

have your child paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking all while learning the legends of “Sukahica.”

And for all those die-hard rock climbers, come enjoy our very own Rock Climbing Camp at the newly

renovated Glen Park Rec Center.

We can’t forget about the multitude of sports camps being offered around our City at centers like

Upper Noe, Crocker Amazon, Kezar and more. Golf and Urban Sports at Moscone Rec Center and the

co-ed Athletes in Motion Sports Camp at Hamilton are some great choices. And don’t forget about

our half day tot camps at Cayuga, Julius Kahn and Midtown.

How to Register for Camps

Camps run June 11 through August 17th. Beginning March 17th, there are three

ways to register for Recreation and Park Summer Camps:

1. Online at sfrecpark.org/register beginning at 10 am on March 17th. View the complete catalog of courses online now.

2. At McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park, 501 Stanyan St. @ Fell, 831-6800.

March 17th: 10 am to 1 pm March 17th - camp starts: M-F, 9 am to 5 pm

3. At one of our twelve Neighborhood Registration Sites.

Important Camp News

NO CAMPS on Wednesday, July 4th.

Extended Care - $90/week

Extended Care for most camps running 9-3 allows you to drop off your camper as early as 8am

and pick up your camper as late as 6pm. Some camps running 9-4 have extended care until 6pm.

Please see the camp description to see which camps offer extended care. All participants not signed

up for extended care must be picked up at the appropriate time. If you pick up late any day, the

participant’s account will be charged for Extended Care. All late pickups from Extended Care will

result in an additional charge of $15 for the first 15 minutes and $1 per minute after that. If extended

care is offered, when you register online for the camp, you will have the opportunity to add the

Extended Care Extra Fee at checkout. If you register at McLaren Lodge or a Recreation Center, please

ask the registrar to add Extended Care to your camp. If you want to add extended care later, please

call 831-6800 to add it over the phone.

Pre-Camp Communication

All parents should receive an email each Wednesday prior to the start of camp. This will include

information such as where to drop off and pick up your child, what to bring, outing and special

activities information, contact information for the camp leaders, and any other important information.

If you do not receive this email, please let us know!

What To Bring

For full day camps, please bring a healthy bag lunch, a snack and refillable water bottle to each day

of camp. Please wear and bring sunscreen if your camp is outdoors. Please wear appropriate clothing

to camp: sneakers (closed toe shoes), layers, etc. Some camps may require the participant to bring

cash for additional expenses such as bus fare or admission.

Special Prerequisites

AquaticsMany of the Aquatic and Waterfront Camps require documentation of having passed a swim test.

Please go to http://sfrecpark.org/documents/deepwatertest.pdf to download the swim test form.

Early Childhood CampsAll participants in our early childhood camps must be potty trained in order to register.

Medical Conditions

Please be sure to inform us of any important medical conditions prior to the start of camp. It really

helps us prepare to provide the best experience for your child. We will be using the ePACT network

to collect your child's medical information. You will receive an inviation via email prior to summer.

T-shirts

Most campers will be issued one Summer Camp t-shirt. Please be sure to send your child to camp

each day in their Official SF Rec & Park Day Camp Shirt.

The City of San Francisco Recreation & Parks is now using ePACT Network to collect your child’s medical and emergency contact information!

City of San Francisco Recreation & Parks is proud to announce our use of ePACT, a highly secure online emergency network, to collect medical and emergency information for all our participants, instead of using paper forms.

Using ePACT means we will better prepared to deal with any emergency, big or small. ePACT provides us with more accurate, up-to-date and legible information than the paper forms we’ve used in past. Because it is web-based, we have the ability to securely access the system via smartphone, tablet or computer so it’s always accessible whether at the park or during a field trip.

For families, it means only completing one form, instead of multiple ones for different programs. You create and manage your single family emergency record, and give access to the Recreation & Parks programs that need it.

Privacy and security is ePACT’s top priority- their system actually meets or exceeds the same standards as most online bank.

How to use ePACT• Each member’s family will receive an email invitation to use ePACT prior to summer starting.

• Families then accept this invite and log in to or create their ePACT account.

• Following a series of steps, parents enter required details, such as medical history and emergency contacts. Families then securely share this information with City of San Francisco Recreation & Parks allowing select staff access to their information.

• Families can update ePACT anytime during the year, and we will automatically be alerted (e.g. add a new cell phone or new emergency contact, and we receive that update).

The City of San Francisco Recreation & Parks cares about the safety of all its members. Using ePACT means we can better connect and communicate with all our members and their families when needed!

RPD Registration Policies

Payment

Payment is due in full at time of registration.

Online registration and payment can be made at sfrecpark.org/register with Visa, MasterCard, or

Discover. Walk-In registration at designated sites can be made with cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, or

Discover.

If payment in full presents a financial hardship, please call us at (415) 831-6800 for information on

how to qualify for recreation scholarships.

Withdrawals & Transfers

You need to withdraw at least one week before the course starts, otherwise you will forfeit the

entire cost of the course. For every withdrawal or transfer from a paid activity, you will be charged

either $12 or 20% of the cost of the course, whichever is greater. The remaining balance will be

credited to your family account. Call (415) 831-6800 to withdraw from a course.

Refunds

There will be a $12 refund processing fee for all payments requested from account balance credits.

Scholarships

Recreation and Parks offers Recreation Scholarships to eligible individuals and families. Ongoing

eligibility is dependent on attendance record. Please call Lillian Bautista, Scholarship

Coordinator, at (415) 831-2717 for information on how to qualify.

Photo Policy

Occasionally photos may be taken of participants in the programs, classes and activities.

These photos may be used in future program guides, brochures, web site, pamphlets, flyers or news

releases.

Class Cancellation

We will notify you if a class or program is cancelled and full refunds or credits will be made available.

Courses and fees are subject to change any time before the session’s program registration begins.

Look What I Explored

Explore nature and the great outdoors! Campers will participate in individual and small group activities exploring and learning about nature. Science exploration with colors, liquids and solid are just some of the activities. Camp will hike daily to examine bugs, rocks, leaves and perhaps evidence of dinosaurs and more.... This camp is mostly outdoors so a change of clothes is recommended. Please bring a healthy snack and water bottle daily. Drop off is at 9 am and pick up is at 1pm.

Adaptive Recreation Camps

Adapted Eco Adventures Camp

This registration is reserved for youth with disabilities. Adapted Eco Adventures Camp is a one week inclusive summer camp for youth who have disabilities, to experience a unique outdoor recreation opportunity. This camp is designed for the adventurous and curious-minded camper, as we explore the southwest corner of San Francisco. Using the Lake Merced Boathouse as our home base, we will learn about the diverse habitat and eco-systems in and around Lake Merced through day hikes and engaging activities such as kayaking. In addition, we will participate in challenges and practice teamwork through cooperative games and friendly competitions. A prerequisite for this camp is a Recreation Assessment administered by one of our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) prior to camp starting. The information collected is used to best support your child and create individual goals to provide a successful camp experience. Please pack a healthy lunch, snack and water bottle daily. This camp gives our campers a chance to enjoy our parks after summer school! We strive to develop social, play, and life skills while fostering community integration and encouraging independence in a safe and nurturing environment. Your child will experience recreational therapy through expressive arts, sensory activities, collaborative games, nature, music, animal assisted therapy, and more! Due to the demand for this camp, initial enrollment is limited to two weeks. A prerequisite for this camp is a Recreation Assessment administered by one of our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) prior to camp starting. The information collected from the Recreation Assessment is used to best support your child and create individual goals to provide a successful and meaningful camp experience. Adaptive Rec - Everybody Travels Camp

This is a specialized therapeutic day camp for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Does your child love riding the SF Muni and taking walks through the city? Come join us at Everybody Travels Camp! This camp will provide your child with an opportunity to explore as we travel to the far ends of the City to develop our inner compass. Comfortable shoes and a hunger for adventure required! Participants should wear layers and bring sunscreen to camp every day. All transportation fees are included in the camp fee, but children may be asked to bring money

Silver Tree Inclusion Camp

This registration is reserved for youth with disabilities. NOTE: Silver Tree camps are Mon-Th from 9am-3pm and Fridays from 12pm-6pm. Does your child love nature and the outdoors? Silver Tree Inclusion Camp is an inclusive day camp located in beautiful Glen Canyon Park, within the Silver Tree Day Camp, Rec and Park?s traditional outdoor camp. We provide trained staff support to help your child be included in the Silver Tree community. Our goal is to provide recreation through outdoor activities, while promoting social skills, play, health and fitness, and independence. Your child will experience hikes, games, arts and crafts, and traditional camp fun! DROP OFF: First day of camp session, parents will escort campers into camp to complete all paperwork, choose the color group, and meet the staff. This will take approximately 20 minutes. All other days, campers can be dropped off at the white-loading zone on Elk St. & Sussex St. Parents will be informed via email on all camp procedures on the Wednesday prior to camp beginning camp session beginning. A prerequisite for this camp is a Recreation Assessment administered by one of our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) prior to camp starting. The information collected from the Recreation Assessment is used to best support your child and create individual goals to provide a successful and meaningful camp experience. Aquatics Camps

Aqua Camp

Explore the world of aquatics this summer in a fun and safe environment at SFRPD’s swimming pools! Improve your swimming abilities through daily workouts, enjoy a wide range of aquatic water games and activities, and go on one outing per week. (Please note that if a participant is enrolled in more than one camp, the field trips may repeat.) Prior to registering for the camp participants must take and pass the deep water test during any of the recreation swim times at any of our local pools and get the approval letter signed off by any of the attending lifeguards or swim instructors. The test includes being able to swim 80 yards without stopping (crawl and/or breaststroke), and tread water for 1 minute. Participants must bring swimsuit, towel, goggles, sandals, and sunscreen. Please pack a healthy lunch, snack and water daily. Drop off is at 9am and pick up is at 3pm. This camp does not offer extended care.

Aquatic Leaders in Training Camp

This program serves as training for tweens & teens interested in developing leadership skills, organizational skills, teamwork, time management, personal initiative, delegation, responsibility, and accountability in the recreation environment focusing on aquatics. Camp Neptune

This exciting camp will introduce participants to deep water/open water environment. Heavy emphasis is placed on fitness, safety and comfort in the open water. The class will teach students about open water swimming, survival and free diving. The last day of camp will culminate in all learned skills applied to open water distance swim in the bay. Due to outdoor open water nature of this camp, students must be a level 5 Red Cross swimmers or higher. This camp is physically challenging and will include on land activities such as running. Prior to registering for the camp participants must take and pass the deep water test during any of the recreation swim times at any of our local pools and get the approval letter signed off by any of the attending lifeguards or swim instructors. The test includes being able to swim 80 yards without stopping (crawl and/or breaststroke), and tread water for 1 minute. Participants must pack a swimsuit, goggles, towel, flip-flops, walking shoes, a jacket & sun screen. For the open water swim, the wetsuits are provided, however we encourage the child to bring one with them for more exact fit. Please pack a healthy lunch, snack and water bottle daily. Aquatics - Summer Learn to SwimThe Learn-to-Swim program teaches fundamentals of swimming and introduces safety around water. American Red Cross certified multi-level swim lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors with the assistance of Instructor Aides. Students are provided a positive and fun opportunity to acquire important, life-long aquatic skills. Programs are for all levels unless specified. All participants must be at least 48" and have met all prerequisites to participate. If the height requirement is not met or participant is in the incorrect level, they will be withdrawn from the class and no refund will be given. LIMITED ENROLLMENT: TWO REGISTRATIONS PER CHILD. After May 26, limits for enrollment will be lifted. Please bring a towel and goggles each day. Pools are closed on July 4th.

Marine Explorers Field Trip Day Camp

This camp is a collaboration between educators from the Randall Museum and the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. This field trip camp takes campers on educational outdoor adventures every day. Campers will learn about, and meet some local marine life including crabs, plankton, sharks, anemones, barnacles, seals, whales and sea stars. Every day, campers will enjoy hands-on experiences exploring the sanctuary’s local marine habitats such as tide pools, the bay and even go kayaking! Each camper may attend only one session of this camp. Please note: Campers are dropped off and picked up at the Visitor’s Center of the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary at 991 Marine Drive on the way to the Warming Hut at Crissy Field. Environmental Sound Camp: Digital Audio Technologies - What can you learn about the world just by listening? On a series of neighborhood walks, we'll listen closely, exploring what the sounds around us can teach us about our environment. Drawing from a community sound archive we build together, students will learn basic production skills such as editing, working with effects, and sampling. The class will conclude with a listening party and playback over the Randall Museum's 12 speaker sound system.

Arts Camps

Art in the Park Camp

Art in the Park is an intensive summer arts program at Sharon Arts Studio, designed for students with an interest in glass, fine arts and ceramics. Campers will spend Monday-Thursday mornings in the art studios, and after lunch they will explore Golden Gate Park with sketch books. Fridays will be field trips to museums or other theme related locations. Previous experience is not required, but clay and glass projects will require the ability to focus and follow multi-step procedures. Attendance is MANDATORY EACH DAY and imperative to the completion of art work. There will be an art show for all on the second Thursday of each camp session from 12-12:30pm. Campers must wear appropriate clothing and closed toe shoes for safety in the studios, and walks in the park rain or shine. Please pack a healthy lunch, snack and water bottle daily. Harvey Milk Summer Camp

Pacific Arts Camp

**Campers must attend both weeks of this two-week camp. If a camper is not present for the first day of camp or is not present for the first week, they may not attend at all and will lose entire payment or scholarship. Campers are required to participate in all art forms offered during the session they attend. Participants must be able to follow fast-paced choreography, work in pairs or groups, and be willing to explore different dance genres. Participants will explore creating original choreography in an ensemble. Classes will be taught by experienced professionals and master teachers. This workshop will conclude with a showcase performance on the final day of session. Parents, guardians, and family are welcome. Minimum 1 year dance training or equivalent experience is required. Young People’s Teen Musical Theatre Company presents this two week intensive camp that will challenge young adults with a strong interest in musical theater. Participants will receive daily technique classes and instruction as a “triple threat” singer, dancer & actor. Each participant will take daily classes in voice, acting, and dance, and learn staging and choreography for performance in solo, small group and ensemble selections from Broadway musicals in an original revue. Participants will be expected to audition on the first day of sessions for parts and placement only. Enrollment in the performance is guaranteed. To audition, please prepare a 16-32 bar cut of an upbeat Broadway song, bring sheet music in the appropriate key for accompanist (provided), and a classical or contemporary monologue (memorized) less than 2 min. Be prepared to dance. Shoes required: ballet and/or jazz and tap. Previous experience is recommended. Participants will learn basics of lighting for special effects, digital sound arts, and adaption of set design based on selected Broadway musicals and plays. Build small scale dioramas, learn theatrical make-up, and costume design. Participate in collaborative designs, individually and as a team. This workshop takes place in a classroom setting and does not allow for large scale building or woodworking in a theatre. Participants will be expected to work alone, in pairs, and small or large groups. Focus and learn in a class type setting, use fine motor-skills, participate in group discussions, and use multiple mediums in projects. Workshop concludes with a required gallery exhibit and presentation of designs. Parents, guardians, and family are invited. Previous experience is recommended. Camp Gourmet is a creative place for the next generation of master chefs to be born. Discover the various cuisines of the world in a highly creative kitchen space. Camp Sukahica

The legend of the deity Sukahica was put into place by the Waterfront division of the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department. The deity Sukahica is the environmental waterfront spiritual steward of surfing/paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking, and canoeing. If you register your child for this camp they will become a follower of Sukahica and will enjoy one week of surfing, kayaking, hiking, and canoeing while learning about the ecosystems that support the waterfront activities we do. Becoming a follower of Sukahica is no easy task. In order to be accepted into the order your child must pass a deep water swim test before the first day of camp. Please email [email protected] for the swim test form. The


test can be only be signed off by any certified lifeguard. Swim test forms must be completed and brought to the first day of camp. Participants must bring a towel, change of clothing, sun screen, light jacket and tennis shoes. Please pack a healthy lunch, snack and water bottle daily. The first week is held at the Lake Merced Boathouse where campers will learn about the diverse habitat and eco-systems of the area through day hikes and fun activities. The second week features a trip to Camp Mather, near Yosemite National Park, where campers will teepee camp and have the opportunity to participate in Camp Mather’s amazing activities like canoe rides and archery. The Eco-Camp week begins at 9am and ends at 3pm. Extended Care is available for drop off between 8am-9am and pick up between 3pm-6pm. Please wear layers and sturdy shoes, and bring a backpack with a healthy lunch, snack, bottle with water, and sunscreen to each day of camp.

Field Archery Adventure Camp

Ready, Aim, Fire! This Archery Adventure Camp is unique from all the rest. Kids will learn archery skills using classic re-curve bows along with all necessary safety equipment provided. We provide basics that will develop a general feel for archery, while building hand/eye coordination, concentration, and focus. Other activities will include archery themed arts and crafts projects such as homemade targets, arrow pens, arrow erasers and more! Campers taken to GGP Archery Range from 10-2. Pine Lake Summer Camp

Welcome to Pine Lake Day Camp, our extraordinary outdoor camp! Our camp is located near Pine Lake and all of Stern Grove is ours to explore. Rods and Reels

Rods and Reels is a beginning fishing camp for fishing enthusiasts. Campers will learn to unlock the mysteries of bass, halibut, sharks, rockfish and how to catch them. The latest fishing techniques will be taught and some well guarded secrets will be shared in this unique camp. The camp meets Tuesday 9am-3pm at Eureka Valley Recreation Center. Boat trips are Weds-Thursday from 7am to 3pm and Friday 9am- 2pm aboard the SoleMan fishing boat. The SoleMan Boat is docked at 236 Jefferson @ Taylor St. in Fisherman’s Wharf. The Palega basketball camp is an intermediate camp focused on intermediate training to improve the camper's knowledge and skill of the game. Players must have at least 2 years of basketball experience and be eager to learn from our skilled coaches. This camp is designed for teens who are comfortable using public transit and want to use their skills to explore the Bay Area. We will ride BART, Samtrans, and the Ferry to explore the far reaches of the Bay. We’ll experience a picnic at Crown Memorial beach in Alameda, arcade games and shopping at Serramonte Mall, and bowling at Jack London Square. Camp Unplugged

This camp is designed to help teens take a break from the hectic pace of summer. This is their week for self-reflection to help them discover and rejuvenate their mind, body and spirit. Participants will in engage a variety of recreational activities to help develop their self confidence & social skills; master their own biochemistry (through education, food and exercise); discover and heighten their personal strengths; and to learn and develop self-care practices . The week will include board games, nature walks, cooking projects, art activities, movement, guest speakers, and local trips .

SF Navigation Camp

A beginner’s guide to transporting yourself to the far reaches of the city! This camp will teach participants how to use SF public transit safely and expose our teen SF explorers to many common bus routes that lead to fun hot spots within San Francisco’s borders. Trips may include: bowling near Crissy Field and the Golden Gate Bridge; Tourist for a Day at Pier 39 and Ghiradelli Square; Mall-walking at Stonestown Galleria; movie watching at the SF/Daly City border. A final itinerary of the camp trip schedule will be emailed to parents 1 week prior to the start of camp. Campers should bring a bag lunch, snack, and reusable bottle for water.
