YEAR 5/6 NEWS Students have been reading “The Watertower” by Gary Crew, this term. It is a strange science fiction story with an ambiguous ending that some students found frustrating. We are reading it because it provides some interesting text features for us to study: a prologue that foreshadows events in the story, a variety of complex sentences, an ambiguous ending and a coda. Students have used the text as model for their own writing and produced some excellent work. Below are some examples: Insane Asylum One winter night Amanda Lilly and Jared Parker met down the street and together they went up the road to the abandoned insane asylum to check it out. Amanda was rushing, like usual. „Come on,‟‟ she said, „‟we‟ll be dead before we get there.‟‟ Jared trailed on behind, his eyes concentrated on his feet.

By Celeste Proctor The Old Sandstone Church Not a thing in Warrawee could remember when the old sandstone church was constructed or who had constructed it, but there it loomed on the outskirts of town – its sandstone walls chipped and decaying its timber floorboards whining and splintering - casting an eerie silhouette over the town, over Warrawee itself. Late one winter‟s evening, Danielle Penfold met Matt Greenwood and together they walked up to the old sandstone church to search for answers. Danielle was neat and tidy, as usual “Get a move on,” she yelled, “the cops will already be there.” Matt carelessly toddled on behind her, hands

by his sides looking curiously at everything around him.

By Paige McConnell Milka No-one in Textan knew when the old milk factory was built, or who had built it, but there it stood in the centre of Stabloy Avenue, its eye- shaped windows, its old cracked walls, dusty and abandoned - spreading an old rotten stink down the road, down Stabloy Avenue. One autumn night, Ida Stadlio and Ellanore Dice met by supermarket and together they headed up to the old milk factory for a look around . Ida was excited, as normal. “My mum says there‟re rats up there,” she said, “but I don‟t care.” Ellanore stayed back. She was edgy.

ST JOSEPH‟S PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Feast of the Assumption was celebrated last Wednesday with children from Years 1-6 attending Mass. The children were able to identify that Mary was very special as she was Jesus‟ mother and that as a person she trusted God and said “Yes” to God to live her life according to his will. We are asked to be like Mary and say “Yes” to God.

The Sacrament of Confirmation: On Sunday 11 August, three children were confirmed by Bishop Bill. Emily Ninness, Nicole Martin and Darcy Moore were confirmed while their friends and family supported them. After the service everyone was invited up to the Mary Mackilop Room for a bite to eat and tea and coffee. The children had a great day. A big “thank you” to Sr Brigid and Mrs Kerr for preparing the children; Father John and Bishop Bill for celebrating the Mass; the children‟s families for all they have done for preparing their children and to the 3 altar servers Cameron Ninness, Clancy Martin and Clancy Moore for assisting Bishop Bill and Father John.

ASPIRE concert “This is Me” was performed last week at St Pius X High School, Adamstown. The students travelled from Merriwa to Muswellbrook courtesy of the generous help of Mrs Whale, Mrs Peebles, Mrs Attenborough and Mrs Inder. The theme was “What makes you you”. Thanks to the wonderful students from Years 3-6 who put up their hands to participate in this experience as audience. It was so good to have 8 keen and enthusiastic students trying something new.

Cameron Ninness

Last week on Friday some students from St Joseph‟s went to ASPIRE and watched the incredible concert “This is Me”. We watched girls and boys doing dancing, drama, music and singing. There were lots of little and big skits that had lots of people in each one. Everyone from St Joseph‟s enjoyed watching it. The students that went to ASPIRE were Sophie, Eliza, Britnee, Tom, Clancy Martin, Jeremy and Kasey and the teachers were Mrs Whale and Mrs Peebles. It was a very big day for all of us. There were a lot of people watching the concert.

Sophie Inder

Thank you to Mrs Whale, who with the help of St James Muswellbrook, took nine students to ASPIRE. What is ASPIRE? I guess you are wondering. ASPIRE is a dance, drama and singing show where children in the Maitland Newcastle Catholic diocese get to perform. There were a lot of students who were brilliant, inspiring, vocal, funny, and also flexible. I can‟t decide my favourite bit, I loved all the show. The room that the show was in had just opened on Thursday. It was great. All students that went to ASPIRE got a form for next year and the

teachers got more for other kids. You have to be in Year 5 to Year 11. Can‟t wait to audition next year! Once again thank you to Mrs Whale for letting us have the opportunity to go.

Eliza Peebles

Last Friday seven children and Mrs Whale went to watch “Aspire”. There were a lot of people. When we got inside there was lots of singing, dancing and drama. Everyone had a good time. Before we went in, we had a look around the high school. It was in Adamstown.

Merriwa Horse Sports Day was held last Monday. Congratulations to Team Merriwa who won the Primary School highest point score award. I was extremely proud of each and every one of our 20 competitors who behaved with so much sportsmanship, school pride and discipline. I am so proud of these students and their parents who prepared them so well and who helped out very generously with the management of the day.

On 13 August 2012, a team of 20 students went to the Merriwa Central School Horse Sports: Jonathan and Rebecca Keegan, Darcy and Clancy Moore, Britnee and Kade Attenborough, Clancy and Nicole Martin, April Lawler, Ty and Hannah Riley, Cameron and Emily Ninness, Jemma Grady, Tom Nairne, Tamasyn McNaught, Charles Brazier, Oliver and Chloe Towell and Caitlin Porter accompanied by Mrs Whale.

Each rider took part in a rider and hack. Then it was time to watch the dirt fly as the riders took part in a bending, 3 mug, stockhorse, barrel,

cloverleaf barrel and flag races. At the end of the day we cleaned up, as some would say, as most people got champion, reserve or sportsmanship awards. Caitlin Porter won an overall sportsmanship award for a primary school student, the school won the highest scoring primary school. A big “thank you” to everyone involved with the running of the day. It was a truly wonderful day.

Cameron Ninness

The Kinder speeches are about “Our Special Place”, 1/2 speeches are about “Water Water Everywhere - How Do I Use Water”, 3/4 speeches are about “Should Australian Native Animals Be Kept in Zoos?” and 5/6 speeches are about “How to Make a Successful Advertising Campaign”. The students have been busily preparing a successful speech. The speeches will be presented at the school in the Mary Mackillop room next week. We wish K-6 the best of luck next week.

Middle Schools Day Five wonderful people from St Joseph‟s, including their 5/6 teacher Mr Morris, travelled to Aberdeen High school on the bus. When they got there, there were lots of people. Year 9 students from St Joseph‟s Aberdeen took the 5/6 children, from around the upper hunter schools, on a tour around the school to do activities. 5/6 went to principal, Mr Tobin, said a little prayer and then we went outside and

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

You've got to say," Knock, knock knock"! Outdoors today, Amelia joined with a group of girls happily playing in the sunshine. They were having a great deal of fun with an invented game, inspired by the curtains on the folding cubby. Zara started out knocking on the door. She entered the house herself and then took on the role of the head of the household. I watched as Amelia took on the role of a visitor, and after knocking, (accompanied by the necessary words : "knock, knock, knock") was allowed 'inside,' gaining access as Zara dramatically pulled back the curtains. I asked the girls if I could join in, to which they replied with a happy chorus of "Yes!" Allowing me to know the rules of their play (part of social play) Amelia informed me, "You've got to say, 'knock, knock, knock'." Of course, I followed this good advice and with a ducking down of my head, I was allowed entry by Zara, as Amelia greeted me, "Come in!" Once inside, I settled on the wooden seat. Amelia noted, "Oops.....I got to close my blind."

Wanting to extend their play a little further, I provided a tea set and a tablecloth. A tea party was soon the order of the day.

Helped by Zara, Lula and Alyra, Amelia set the scene with a colourful orange sarong.... Lula, Zara, Amelia and Kirsty were all totally engaged in their play. Their concentrating faces (above) say it all! Amelia seemed to

take on the role as leader...."One, two, three, four," as she counted out the teacups. Amelia was comfortable and happy in this familiar 'home' environment. It was rather lovely being so close to nature. Amelia looked up to see the overhead vines very close to head. Then......as she leaned comfortably forwards, she got a surprise when she overbalanced and suddenly both her and part of the wall of the cubby became unclipped. Down they went! (She giggled) A fun morning's play! Children learn many social skills as they interact with others, share materials and create their own games. They learn that their actions have consequences for themselves and for others.

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care

Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

Its hard to believe as I write this its only a little more than three weeks until term 3 is complete. It is this week I will begin the program for the holidays!

Time really does fly when we have fun at MAC.

We have begun the veggie patch, and its looking quite cool. The seeds were planted this week so in about two months time with a bit of luck and tender care we will begin to see some results. The purpose of the veggie garden is not just to see some plants grow but also to allow everyone to be able to use it. If you needed a lettuce, carrot or some herbs for a meal at home, MAC families are welcome to come and select from our crops, and we also get to utilise the garden of course to help supply us with afternoon tea!

LOCAL GOVERNMENT Nine rural shires in NSW are not holding elections this year because they have either not enough or the bare minimum of candidates. Life on the land is increasingly hard and fewer farmers can spare the time for local government. I have put my hand up for the Upper Hunter Shire Council – I served on the Merriwa Shire Council and the Upper Hunter Development Board, Merriwa was a rural shire, farmland its main source of rates, so I thought I knew my way around. But: Eight years ago Merriwa, Scone and Murrurundi Shires were amalgamated into the Upper Hunter Shire. Merriwa lost the valuable little corner that contained Ulan coal mine, but kept al its council staff. Murrurundi transferred more or less half its land and half its staff to a northern council. The carrot of Economies of Scale was dangled by State and local authorities when promoting this amalgamation – For example, if three different people were doing the same job in three different shires, then maybe one person could do that job in the amalgamated shire. The State government then legislated against the very Economies of Scale it had promoted, introducing „employment protection‟ – in local government areas with populations under 5000 no local government jobs could be lost – indefinitely. So now the new Upper Hunter Shire had the same number of staff as the previous three councils had before (less the Murrurundi

transfers), and three sets of Council Chambers. So what did they do next? They built a fourth set of Council Chambers, the Super Chambers, in Scone at a cost of 5 million dollars. Of course they did! But there is more. Rate pegging by IPART was introduced, holding annual rate rises to a maximum of around 3%. This maximum allowable rate rise immediately became the minimum rate rise levied by councils. „Farmland‟ still provides more than half the rates in the General Fund of the Upper Hunter Shire - $$.5m out of $8.4m. Council has increased this by the IPART limit of 3.6% this year while farm incomes are recovering from several years of drought and

the high Australian dollar works against farm exports. The General Fund rate pool of $8.4m no longer covers the wages and salaries of council staff – which comes to $12.976m. Even with the addition of annual charges, the rate pool only rises to $12.7m. At a time when dairy farmers are going out backwards, with wool and meat producers not far behind, the Upper Hunter Shire Council proposes a rate rise of 10% for next year – three times the IPART limit. The Upper Hunter Shire Council is becoming a Frankenstein monster, consuming the very ratepayers it is supposed to serve. It‟s time for change!

GET YOUR LAND AND STOCK RETURN IN BEFORE 31 AUGUST

The Livestock Health and Pest Authorities (LHPAs) are encouraging recipients of 2012 Land and Stock Returns to lodge their completed return before Friday 31 August to avoid a late fee. In June over 147,000 Annual Land and Stock Returns were mailed to all LHPA ratepayers and individuals with a current brand, earmark or property identification code (PIC) in NSW. Chair of the LHPA State Management Council, Ian Donges, says the data collected in the returns forms a vital part of NSW‟ biosecurity. “The information you provide in your Annual Land and Stock Return helps build a statewide biosecurity picture about agricultural usage and livestock numbers, which is invaluable in the event of an emergency disease outbreak,” he said. “This is why it‟s extremely important that all recipients lodge a completed return so LHPAs have the most up to date information on NSW properties and livestock.” With less than two weeks until the due date, the LHPAs are encouraging those who are yet to complete and lodge their return to make use of the online lodgement facility. The online lodgement option is faster, more streamlined and environmentally friendly than the hard copy lodgement option. Anyone with a computer and access to the internet can lodge their return online in a few simple steps, using the Holding Reference Number and

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SAMARATIN’S PURSE

Operation Christmas Child is upon us again and I would like to thank the people of Merriwa for your wonderful contribution to the shoe box collection last year. Operation Christmas Child is a small way to bring joy to an underprivileged child at Christmas time. Samaritan‟s Purse is a non-profit organisation providing emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people around the world. This organisation meets the physical needs of victims of war, famine, natural disaster and disease with the aim of demonstrating God‟s love. The aid and assistance are given by Samaritan‟s Purse without regard to the race, gender, Religion or ethnicity of the beneficiaries. If you would like to participate in this wonderful cause or to find out more about Operation Christmas Child please contact me on 6548 2142 or 0425 303 011. Maybe your family would like to fill a box and put a smile on the face of a child that has never received a Christmas gift before. Other ways of supporting this cause is with donations of items such as match box toys, skipping ropes or maybe soap, tooth brushes and face washers. Thank you again for your support and participation in the past and looking forward to reaching a target of 100 boxes for Merriwa this year.

MORE THAN JUST A POST OFFICE! Olympic Coins - We have two examples of coins from the recent big London show that would make great collectors items and appreciate in value. An uncirculated and individually numbered special coin with boxing kangaroo and nicely presented in descriptive envelope. One left at $15.95. A Solid silver, ½ oz square coin which has the red bus stamp on its face together with another red bus stamp on metal base. Beautifully crafted and presented in timber stand. A numbered and limited release for $99.95. One only obtained. Mini Hi-Fi - As a retailer we sometimes receive a product that we know is exceptional value and underpriced. But in these days of hyper advertising and dodgy claims how do we tell our customers of a genuine bargain? Well listen up. The Pico has top loading CD player, FM/AM radio and aux jack input for a MP3 music player. Nothing too fancy but it sounds great and looks good too – it‟s not cheap looking. We are using one for background music in the PO and have tried various CD‟s plus my iPod Shuffle - so ask for a demo. Even with the volume well up there is still great sound with no discernible distortion. How much? Would you believe only $34.99! As I said, it is underpriced and will sell quick. That means we will run out quick and I cannot guarantee any re-orders. You know what to do. Tablet Computers in Stock - Speaking of bargains here‟s another one. No bull! A regular customer of ours has checked out this product using search engines, social networks and chat pages. He found that the specs and quality were as good as any and better than most and that the value, particularly for the 7 inch was the best. If you are looking for a Tablet come see us about these – you can ask to see our spec. sheets but here are the basics: Pendopad 4.0 with Ice Cream Sandwich 1 GHz op. system. 1 GB RAM. Front and rear cameras + mike. HDMI output and input. Accelerometer. Wi Fi. SDHC card up to 32GB. Comes with protective pouch, USB cable & keyboard adapter, earphones and charger/adapter. The 7 inch version is only $149 and the 9.7 inch $279. That‟s very good buying.

2013 Diaries Now In - We now have stock of next years diaries from small pocket size at $5.50 to A4 sized hard covers at only $8.95. These are Cumberland branded books which have good quality without the higher price tag of the other named brands. Great Sounding Computer Speakers - Nowadays you can use a computer (or laptop or Tablet) for much more than computing. They are complete entertainment centres. Many web sites have sound or music tracks and you can play your downloaded tracks in the background or use your computer as you main music system. And you need good sound and particularly bass for games. But you are getting sub standard sound when you rely on just the built-in speakers or most small and tinny add-ons. There are many plug-in speakers to choose from but as usual we have selected the best value product to stock – check these out: Logitec Speaker System Z323. Two ported satellite speakers give 360 degree audio evenly in all directions plus a ported down firing subwoofer. High power handing of 30 watt RMS for good sound and bass without distortion. Has dual RCA jack and 3.5mm jack input to connect ipods, DVD players etc and integrated headphone jack. Must check these out - all for only $79.95. Shuffle MP3 for $19.95 - On special this month whilst stocks last. In green, purple or silver the Pico Life, MP3 player with shuffle looks a lot like a popular American fruity brand but for a lot less at only $19.95. Includes headphones, 2GB of memory, USB cord and very easy to use. They are back in stock and great for listening whilst jogging, doing homework – anything! All Telstra Mobiles Reduced - Yes! But only at Merriwa post office – and while stocks last. Our supplier is overstocked and has reduced our buying price so (unlike others) we are passing the discounts on to our customers. You won‟t find these prices anywhere else so now is the time to buy before we run out of stock. Here‟s what‟s left: Telstra Easycall 2. $75. Big buttons,

audible numbers, torch, radio. Samsung S5511T in red or black. $75.

Very popular flip phone, strong and reliable.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR! We are privileged to live in such a beautiful part of Australia, particularly at this time of the year. Warm sunny days follow crisp, frosty mornings with, hopefully, the occasional wet day, leading to the growth of crops and pastures, with new-born lambs and calves frolicking about. The wattles are bursting into flower and wildflowers in the bush are blooming. The canola crops are coming into flower promising a good harvest. Our highly fertile Merriwa Plateau basalt soils produce grain, meat and wool to provide for the population of Australia and the world. These soils are far too important for the wellbeing of our children and grand-children, to risk losing them to over-exploitation by mining and coal seam gas companies for just short-term financial gain. We must be aware that exploratory holes drilled through aquifers to the coal seams can potentially pollute and deplete the ground water. A Walk on the Wild Side A couple of MHEG members visited the Goulburn River National Park last weekend, and we can strongly recommend a trip down Wollar Road to Lee‟s Pinch where you will be greeted by a spectacular display of wildflowers

At the moment, several species of wattle are in full bloom, along with the paler yellow phebalium and contrasting bright pink boronia, eye-catching purple pea-flowered hoveas and cerise grevilleas, hakeas and casuarinas with nobbly fruits, intertwined with rich plum coloured hardenbergias are in abundance. Embracing the roadway is the endangered Homoranthus darwinoides, a fragile looking plant with beautiful yellow and red flowers, hanging like miniature lanterns. The low growing blue damperas and sprawling red and

green bottle brush shrubs will soon be in flower, followed by the delicate cream flannel flowers. Australian wildflowers are unique and a sight to be seen! Put on your walking boots, grab your camera and take advantage of this spring-time bounty right on our doorstep.

Vote 1

For RON CAMPBELL

To represent you

Authorised by R .Campbell

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I am a farmer and grazier, working with my two married sons, on a large farming and grazing enterprise at Woodlands, Merriwa. I have lived on this farm for nearly 50 years. I have a strong commitment to effective and fair representation for all ratepayers. If elected I would like the new Council to take a fresh look at how it acts and carries out its functions. To review its spending priorities. Our secondary roads need a higher priority of Shire spending to enable effective maintenance and upgrading throughout the Shire. The Shire needs to continue to promote regional sustainable growth to help with the extra demands placed on it for housing and business activities in each of the growth centres. The Council needs to take an active stand against issues that have the potential to damage our Rural and Agricultural industries. Science has not proven the safety of Coal Seam Gas production, which has the potential to damage our underground water aquifers affecting both town and agricultural water. As a high priority the new Council needs to resolve the issue of coal trains bisecting the town of Scone, to monitor the impact of heavy transport through the main streets of Murrurundi, Scone and Aberdeen.

Funding is always an issue for local government. I do not believe that continually increasing rates is the answer to funding shortfalls. This relies too heavily on the capacity of the ratepayers to pay. We stage many successful events within the Shire to showcase the Upper Hunter: Merriwa - The Festival of the Fleeces Scone - The Horse Festival Week Murrurundi - King of the Ranges Aberdeen - The Highland Games These events are all highly successful because of the strong community spirit and support in each centre within the Upper Hunter Shire. The new Council need to work as a team to vote positively on issues that advance the Shire as a whole. I would like to be a part of representing the enlarged Merriwa/Cassilis area and to make an effective contribution to the Upper Hunter Shire. For this reason I would seek your No. 1 Vote to represent you.

Ron Campbell Candidate for the

Upper Hunter Shire Elections

SPRING INTO SPRING With Springtime almost upon us, it will soon be time to shed those clothes and reveal our bodies!! Not a tempting thought for some of us, so let‟s do something about it. Lets get „Taught, Trim and Terrific‟. With group classes and Circuit training classes starting in the next few weeks (watch this space) it‟s time to make sure your MFC Membership is up to date (it can be renewed at the Pharmacy) so that you can make use of our wonderful facilities and start working on your fitness. Well when that next happens, just tell yourself to „Shut Up‟ and get out there and do that run, gym session, or bike ride. You will feel fantastic after the exercise and your body and mind will thank you for it for the rest of the day. It is time we all shed the winter blues, Shut the Duck Up and get out there for some serious huffing and puffing. See you soon,

HAVE"A"CHAT I recently had the honour of receiving some cheques from various local organisations on behalf of the Cancer Council. On Friday evening a presentation was made, during which the Merriwa Quilting Groups donated a very generous cheque of $743.00 to the Cancer Council for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The Quilters raised these funds during the Festival of the Fleeces and was very gratefully received. A couple of weeks ago I was presented with another cheque on behalf of the Cancer Council for Relay for Life, for $500.00 from the Merriwa Bushman‟s Campdraft and Rodeo Association. Relay for Life is a fun event that is held in Merriwa every second year that raises funds for research and support in all cancer related areas. I was also recently presented with yet another cheque for the Cancer Council. Merriwa Rugby League donated $200.00 to the Cancer Council, raising money at one of their recent home games. It is inspiring to see this tremendous support for the Cancer Council from our local community. The unfortunate facts are that every second person in NSW will develop cancer in their lifetime. This year alone, more

than 39,000 people in NSW will be diagnosed with cancer. These donations go a long way in supporting the work carried out by the Cancer Council and I would like to thank all of these organisations for their support for something that is so close to my heart. On a different note, one of the Cancer Councils main objectives over the next few years is to see an improvement in the all NSW schools Sunsmart Programmes. The Cancer Council will be encouraging local and state politicians to make wide brimmed hats compulsory in all schools throughout the state. Smart schools are already there. Over the last 12 to 18 months, the need for the Have"a"Chat support group appears to have sadly declined to the point of being no more. However I would like to thank those people who have found a need for Have"a"Chat. I will continue my support for the Cancer Council in various ways and will still have some Cancer Council information booklets here at the shop. If anyone needs to contact the Cancer Council, simply call 13 11 20, and they will answer all of your questions.

WOOLBROOK INDUSTRIES

One more issue on the subject of subsidies since they are so financially important to all of us because our efforts to prevent the collapse of some of our industries cost Australians about A$18,500,000,000 ($18.5 billion) dollars a year. This is an enormous amount and equates to about $1000 per year for every Australian, including babies, children and anyone else not working, so it is probably costing every taxpayer at least $2000 per year. There are many subsidy categories, and they are easier to follow if they are grouped into four basic ones, and these are as follows with all four listed in descending order of subsidy receipts together with their rounded proportional per centages shown in brackets. (1) All forms of Secondary Industry, i.e. mostly manufacturing, about $10.5 billion (57%). (2) All forms of Tertiary Industry, i.e. such as finance, transport, and accommodation, $5.2 billion (28%) (3) All forms of Soft Primary Industry, i.e. farming, cattle, sheep, logging, fishing, orchards etc., just over $2 billion (11%). (4) All forms of Hard Primary Industry, i.e. mostly mining, just over $.5 billion (half a billion dollars, about 4%). How often have you heard someone say “The cocky just moans, and drives his new Holden” or, by the perhaps more informed and more intellectual, “Primary Producers like to socialise

their losses and capitalise their profits”, referring of course to Soft Primary Producers. How often have you seen the cries of protest in newspaper columns and letters and on TV, particularly from those in the cities, about the enormous subsidies paid to greedy Primary Producers. Disregarding at this stage the wisdom of paying any subsidies at all to anyone for any reason, when I get down to hard Government supplied subsidy figures, and study them closely, two things immediately strike me (1) Soft Primary Industries receive about 11% of all subsidies, and it is necessary to include logging and fishing to even reach that total. (2) Secondary Industries receive about 57%, i.e. about five times as much as Soft Primary Industries. (3) Tertiary Industries, at about 28%, receive a proportion approaching three times that of Soft Primary Industries. This makes me wonder why so many complain bitterly about the 11% paid to farmers, (particularly in drought times), loggers and fishermen; yet the moment job losses occur in Secondary and Tertiary industries, (which already account for nearly 90% of all subsidies), when they are having a hard time and job losses occur (for instance in the steel industry recently), there are voices raised urging that their subsidies be increased because jobs are at risk To be fair there is

some hypocrisy and double values involved here since there is also strong opposition to curtailing online overseas buying even though it imperils our retailing (Tertiary) industries. This buying, if under $1000 per order, not only deprives the government of 10% GST plus 5% duty (making our retail industries even less competitive at the cost of Federal revenue) but also endangers the jobs of the 230,000 people who work in the Australian retailing (Tertiary) industries; no move here to ban online overseas shopping to protect jobs!! How can the combined Secondary and Tertiary industries receive about 85% of all subsidies with little serious objections, while the Soft Primary Industries (always one of our chief export earners) are so often denigrated when they receive about 10%? Probably because, even though they feed much of Australia and the world with very cheap high quality products, they have little political power being numerically so few. Also, being non-unionised, they do not carry the same weight in our Federal parliament, particularly when a Labor Government is in power. I recall that about 1971, when working for Mercedes-Benz Commercial vehicles, I had a brief insight into Tariffs, which are still one form of Australia‟s then much more extensive import barriers. I was in our Spare Parts Department talking to a truckie I knew. In one hand he held a beautifully machined cluster gear, in the other an oil seal which comprised little more than a spring and a piece of leather, and he was complaining bitterly that the seal was as expensive as the obviously much more sophisticated cluster gear and therefore the seal

must be an outrageous rip off. I told him not to worry because moves were afoot which would soon result in a big price difference between the two and our Spare Parts Manager, who was listening to the conversation, looked at me sharply, he was apprehensive as to what I might say. The truckie said that, if what I said was true, it was about time because no doubt I must mean the price of the seal would be greatly reduced, and I said: “No George, you misunderstand me. Gradan Gears have successfully requested that an 80% tariff to be imposed on all imported gears like the one you have in your hand. This is because Gradan Gears are capable of making all gears, however it costs them about twice as much to make them as imported ones from Germany like the one in your hand. Therefore, soon, while the leather seal will not change in price, the difference will be because your cluster gear will cost nearly twice as much. Are you happier now?”. He went away even less happy, and soon his operating costs would rise slightly and all Australians would have to pay a little more for that most universal of services, transport.

VETERINARY NEWS WITH ANTHEA Warm Days have invited another little friend into our jar at the office last week. Come down & have a look & let us know what type it is. You will all be suprised! So we are letting you know that even though the mornings are still cold the snakes are already out taking advantage of the warm days so please take care. Remember where there are little ones there has got to be BIG ones!!!!! We will have back in the surgery soon our snake repellers (that went well last year). With the way the year is flying by us all, we just want to remind all cat owners that the breeding season is getting closer which results in an exceptional number of unwanted kittens. Just remember that kittens are all cute & cuddly until they grow up. This is when you need to take responsibility & have them desexed so that you can enjoy them a lot longer knowing that they are not out & about breeding more unwanted kittens. It also helps reduce the spread of infectious diseases amongst cats, such as cat flu & feline aids.

It is a simple day surgery, so if you don‟t want kittens & the headache they can bring please call the office to book in, before cat breeding season arrives.

Canine parvo virus that affects dogs of all ages. The virus attacks the intestines causing blood stained diarrhoea, uncontrollable vomiting & severe abdominal pain. Dogs will often die from severe dehydration despite intensive veterinary care. Is it not necessary to have direct contact with other dogs for the disease to be spread. The virus is so persistent that the infected dogs‟

environment needs to be thoroughly cleaned with a potent disinfectant to prevent spread to other dogs. Outbreaks occur regularly throughout Australia in the summer months. The virus can remain in the ground for up to ten years. Prevention is as simple as having your dog vaccinated. Treatment is costly and may not always be successful. Don‟t take the risk when it‟s as simple as an appointment with us to have the vaccination. Call us today to discuss. Now that it is the foaling season it is important to remember to remove caslicks before foaling, and to ensure adequate nutrition for your mare & foal. Also ensure that vaccinations for your horse eg (tetanus) is up to date 4 weeks prior to foaling & also drenching the mare before foaling. We now can offer worm egg counts for those who are interested. Congratulations go out to all our valued clients that attended the Brisbane Royal Show last week. UNITING CHURCH CHAT AND NEWS Merriwa grows quite a lot of grain that is used to make flour for biscuits and bread. The grains of wheat that is used to make the flour contain 3 parts that are very significant in determining what happens to each grain and how it is used. There is a hull, husk or the bran which is the outside shell of the wheat grain. This protects the inside, absorbs moisture and provides much of the fibre roughage in certain breads. Then there is the inside of the grain. This is the endosperm and this contains the carbohydrates that grind down to make the flour that is used to make bread or biscuits. It depends on the variety of wheat a farmer grows and it depends on how hot and quickly a grain of wheat ripens just how much protein there is in this area of each grain. The amount of protein in the grain make a difference in what type of bread or biscuit is made. Ask a farmer what level of protein wheat he tries to grow? The final key part of a grain of wheat is the germ. This is a small part at the flat end of the grain that contains the unsaturated fats and other nutrients that feed the grain as it starts to grow. The church has been learning this last month about some teaching Jesus gave about bread. Jesus said „I am the „bread of life‟ He meant he is the spiritual equivalent of bread. He said

come to me and you won‟t be hungry. You won‟t want possessions, purpose, more money you‟ll want something better. He also said Come and eat my flesh and you will have a life with God. He meant he was God become flesh and we need to absorb and digest the meaning significance of this God become man and what that means. If you do, do this you will really have a close relationship with God himself. We eat bread every day and we get hungry for more. That is what Jesus meant. When you try him and believe him,you will want more of him everyday. Remember to come along with your family to Messy Church and tea on 25 at the Anglican Church hall. We will be looking at how Jesus also said „ I am the Vine‟ What did he mean by that? Did you find out the aboriginal tribal groups from around Merriwa. Merriwa appears to be on the border between the Drakinjang and the Wonnarua peoples. Do you know anything about these peoples? Merriwa UCA services 11am 26 6pm on 2

MERRIWA DISTRICT EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Merriwa District Education Foundation began in 2002 and over the years has supported twenty three Merriwa students with the cost of their post schooling education. The purpose of the foundation is to support and encourage school leavers within the Merriwa district to pursue their chosen careers or studies. Through membership and a donation system the Merriwa District Education Foundation sets about raising funds that could be used to provide financial assistance to local students. Applications for the 2013 year of grants are open to any students who reside in the old Merriwa Shire boundary and are available from Jane Hegarty at Merriwa Central School or the Education Foundation website. Applications close on 30 November 2012 and for any further information please contact one of the committee members who are listed in our Ringer sponsorship box. The Merriwa District Education Foundation would also like to extend an invitation to any citizens of Merriwa and its district to a lunch celebrating ten years of assistance to students in our district. It is being held on 23 September at the Plough Inn Café Cassilis from 11am. Please come along and hear from some of our previous students and learn a little about the role of the foundation. RSVP Jane Hegarty 6376 1052. Citizens of Merriwa may be interested in the following information as a way of helping to raise funds for the Merriwa District Education Foundation. We are pleased to announce our participation in Hunter Mutual‟s Community Partnership Account. This participation will enable us to raise additional funds to purchase resources benefiting our organisation and the local community. How it works Hunter Mutual will make a 1.00% bonus payment to The Merriwa Education foundation at the end of each financial year. This payment is calculated by combining the average annual

balance of all Hunter Mutual members who nominate us as their Recipient Organisation. Benefits to you In opening a Community Partnership Account you will receive a competitive interest rate on an “at call” savings or transaction account with full access. You can assist in our fundraising without it costing you anything. In fact, given the competitive interest rate and generous fee structure offered on the Community Partnership Account, you may also benefit by transferring your banking to Hunter Mutual. Supporting The Merriwa Education Foundation through a Hunter Mutual Community Partnership Account is easy. For more information visit your local Hunter Mutual branch, conveniently located at 92 Bettington Street Merriwa or call 6548 2651. Thank you to all those people who have donated throughout the year. This has enabled us to support six students this year with their tertiary studies and we hope to continue this tradition with your generous support.

BEWARE THE DEADLIEST OF ALL THE NIGHTSHADES

Extracts from the plant Atropa belladonna have had long histories as medicines, as cosmetics and also as poisons. It‟s a member of the Nightshade family. In fact, so potent is belladonna as a poison it bears the common name “deadly nightshade”. The word belladonna is derived from the Italian and means beautiful lady, so called because of its use to dilate the pupils to produce a seductive look. Belladonna has long been considered one of the world‟s most toxic plants. However, these days we know that belladonna is far from the most deadly of all the nightshades. Other members of this extended family include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, chili peppers and tobacco. And tobacco has become the single greatest cause of preventable death worldwide. One of the stories that surround the life of 16th century English poet and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh is that he threw his cloak over a puddle to prevent the first Queen Elizabeth from muddying her shoes. Another is that he introduced tobacco to Britain. It‟s unlikely he actually ever got his cloak dirty – at least not in the way so commonly described; and tobacco was already a well-known commodity in Europe by the mid 1500s. But, it is fairly certain that he popularised the habit of smoking at the English court – not something we really should thank him for. Back in Australia, tobacco smoking is thought to have been introduced to the indigenous community by Indonesian fishermen in the 1700s; and from 1788 the British patterns of tobacco use were transported to Australia by the convicts and free settlers.

MERRIWA HARDWARE Anyway, our Fathers Day "Gifts With Grunt" dogalogue is grunting along quite nicely. Plenty of some stock, out of other. A lot of stuff (yes, that's the technical term) has been reordered, and while we are still waiting for a few items to turn up, some stock has fully run out. So I say again, don't wait until the last minute because stock is limited and will run out. We have a new delivery of the Dayton galvanised lawn carts. These lawn carts are very sturdy and will last for many years. Great for hauling firewood or my favorite, filling with ice and a few nice cold drinks when the weather warms up. I will mention again our initial small range of Philmac water fittings. We will see how they go and expand the range as required. Noticed how green your lawn is looking? No it's not nice green grass you goose, it's bindii. You know, that nice rich green groundcover will, in a few months turn brown and develop some nasty little spikes that will then drive you crazy. Thats what it does to me anyway. Now is the time to spray the rotten stuff with a bindii killer There are a few varieties of bindii killer available at Merriwa Hardware, so come in and check them out. Just had a sudden rush of customers and am now out of time, so that's all for this week. Did you know? Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that a third of the world‟s population now smokes and that around five and a half million people die each year from smoking-related causes. Additionally another 600,000 people, many of them children will die from second-hand smoke. There were suspicions about the possible link between smoking and lung cancer as far back as 1920; and a landmark study by Richard Doll published in the British Medical Journal in 1950 provided even stronger evidence. However, smoking causes not only lung cancer; it also causes cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, bladder, kidney, liver, pancreas, stomach, colon, rectum, cervix and blood. As well, smoking is a major cause of heart disease and a significant risk factor associated with macular degeneration, osteoporosis, depression, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and stroke. Studies show that nearly two thirds of smokers would like to stop smoking, but fewer than 1 in 20 people who try to quit will actually remain non-smokers after three months.

Up until recently, it was thought that stopping smoking completely – either cold turkey or with the help of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) – was the best way to ensure becoming a long term non-smoker. But this “quick stop” method doesn‟t suit everyone. Evidence has shown that reducing the number of cigarettes smoked with the assistance of NRT, makes it easier for some heavily addicted smokers to ultimately quit completely. Smoking cessation has both immediate and long term health benefits. Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath are all less likely to occur in a non-smoker. Non-smokers can cope better with respiratory infections; and there is an improvement in general health. Smokers who quit at age 50 halve their risk of a smoking related death and if they stop by age 30 they avoid almost all the risk. If you‟re ready to quit, your pharmacist can help you choose the smoking cessation therapy which suits you best. Ask for the Staying a Non Smoker fact card which is available from Merriwa Pharmacy.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE U/6‟s - Under 6's played Singleton on Saturday. Hudson, Dylan, Mathew and Jackson played some great football, showing Singleton how good Merriwa can defend. Their defence was worked on at training this week and they showed a big improvement on last week‟s game. We only had six boys out there on the field against a full Singleton side, which makes defence a very important factor in the game, so the boys should be proud of themselves. Player of the Game went to Dylan, with some tough tackles and outstanding plays with the ball, leading into 4 tries for the game. Well done Dylan. My apologies for missing last week‟s Ringer after our home game. The 6's played a very tough Scone side at Home, which really tested our defence. But to their credit they did not give up, making some hard tackles towards the end of the game. Jackson, Hudson, Dylan and Clayton all tried their hardest with the ball in their hands but found Scone boys on them before they new it. Clayton was very pleased to finally break the defence with a dive over the try line. Player of the Game went to Clayton. Well done, Clayton. Just two more games to go for the season, so let‟s all get to training boys.

Belinda Keane U/8‟s - Under 8‟s played in Singleton against Singleton Black. All boys played an exceptional game working together as a team. Great tackling, ball handling and runs made by all. Great improvement to Dylan and Will showing us some excellent defence. Fantastic plays by Charles, Nicka and Damian with some very close calls to the try line. We were even treated to a scrum which I don‟t know who were more excited the parents or the kids. Well done to Christine for once again giving it a go. Player of

the Match this round went to Dylan Turner. Well done Dylan. Two more games to go boys, keep up the good work.
