Brief Overview and Summary of the 2017 WA SBE Show – Jenny Yuen

I would like to thank my stewards John and Penny who both did an excellent job. A huge thank you to Vicki who is an excellent stenographer, sometimes I think she can read my mind. Thank you to Leanne who also assisted as Stenographer. Your club is very lucky to have 2 such capable stenographers. Thank you to Ian Marr, your President and the team who made this event possible from the ground crew to the excellent catering team. Thank you to my chauffeur Kevin and both Kevin’s and Robyn’s hospitality. It was disappointing that the LSC classes were low with no opens at all. Two LSC animals stood out to me- the LSC Junior bitch winner Ch. Glenbala Very Vibrant AZ and the very nice Intermediate Dog winner Hasenway Major Tom. I tried to be as accurate as possible with the measuring but it is always difficult on such an uneven surface. While a board was available it lacked stability and therefore would not have made the measuring any more accurate. A concrete slab in front and slightly to the side of the Judge’s tent would be ideal. It needs to be large enough to allow both dog and handler to fit comfortably on it. Just food for thought. As with the rest of Australia your type is somewhat mixed. Pasterns: I noticed that quite a few animals had somewhat upright pasterns. Short under chests: There are a few with short under chests. The heads are generally good particularly coming through Suries Alfie and Rafael. The planes of the skull and fore face are not always correct with some slightly Roman noses. As with Australia wide the croups could be generally a little longer and more correctly angled i.e. less steep. Same issues with the length and lay of the upper arm. Size: A few size issues. An uneven grass surface generally gives the advantage to the dog. As I mentioned earlier it is not always as accurate as a solid, stable surface. Generally you are ahead with the angulation of the hindquarter, with only a few animals with very loose hocks. You need to keep on top of this, as excessive hind angulation coupled with very loose hocks is unsound. It impacts on the workability of the dog. This is exacerbated when the back is peaked leading into a steep croup. This is an increasing problem worldwide. Our breed is supposed to be a medium sized, working dog that should be free of exaggeration. He/she MUST BE ABLE TO WORK. It would seem that few local dogs get the opportunity at stud. I would urge that you consider some of these dogs. There were 2 progeny groups: Schaeferhund Rafael and Hornemarks Ricco (Imp Swe). There will be notes published of the Judges’ comments regarding these 2 groups.
