Lesson 1 - Introduction and Folge (Episode) 1

This unit is about

- understanding spoken German. You will listen to 15 short episodes of the story of Nina and Leo.

- personal information. You will review expressions used to describe people and you will describe yourself, both orally (a tape recording) and in writing.

- a little grammar review: we will talk about verb endings, numbers, telling time and a few other odds and ends.

There will not be a final test for this unit. Instead, there will be several short quizzes and three graded projects - an audio recording with sound effects, a description of yourself, and your flashcards which you will turn in at the end of this unit.

The instructions and procedures will be similar for all episodes: 1. get the worksheets from our website, 2. look at the picture on your worksheet, 3. be able to answer the general questions under the picture (A - C/D) orally, 4. listen to the episode, 5. answer the questions about the episode in writing (also the ones marked with an *).

Please answer all German questions in German!

Lesson 3a - Project One

This is one of the projects you will be doing for a grade in this unit (instead of taking a final test). Do you remember episodes 1 and 2 of our play? If not, please go back and listen to them. I want you to make an audio recording similar to these two episodes. Please introduce yourself - name, age, where you live, and one sentence describing yourself - and introduce at least two other people - name, age and one sentence description. They can be members of your family, friends, teachers, pets, classmates, etc. Important: I want your recording to have some sound effects: With each person you are describing (including yourself) record some sound that shows what the person is doing. Nina in our episode was brushing her teeth; you could be listening to music, typing on the computer or playing a video game, playing ball, etc. If you introduce one of your pets get them to meow, bark or whatever.Submission: Please submit your assignment under the appropriate folder in your course. Alternatively, you can record your file or on your computer and send your file as an email attachment.Criteria for grading your recording will be:Completeness (name, age, place of residence and description of yourself; name, age and one sentence description of two other persons or animals);Pronunciation (you are welcome to call and practice your sentences before you record them);Grammatical correctness;Sound effects (e.g. Did you use sound effects? Do the sound effects give some information about the person/animal?)

Checklist for Project One:

Write down the information about yourself.

Decide on a sound effect for yourself.

Pick two other persons or animals. Write down the information about them.

Decide on sound effects for the other two.

Check with us on grammar and pronunciation of your sentences.

3. Ein bißchen Grammatik - Word Order

Please go to our website and watch Flash Clip Word Order.

Fill in the blanks below as you are watching.

1. Normal word order in English or German is:

Examples:

2. QuestionsEinheit 2: Keine Panik Seite 26

Page 27: German Online Web viewLook up some information on Hamburg and Berlin (a good source is the Internet). ... The word search below uses German words for some items from the picture on

In a German question, the       goes after the      .

In some English questions it does, too:

     (Hast du Tintenfisch gegessen?)

      (Kannst du Polka tanzen?)

(Bist du verrückt?)This principle - subject goes after the verb in a question - always applies to German:

Do you Yahoo?

Does Britney Spears sing?

3. Two-part VerbsWhen the verb phrase in a German sentence consists of two parts, the second part goes to the

      of the sentence.

Examples: Ich       das verflixte Buch nicht      !

Warum       Elvis nicht      ?

Mama, Ludwig       mein Make-up      !

4. Inverted Word Order

Your normal word order in a German sentence is Subject - Verb - Other Stuff. What happens when you start a German sentence with “Other Stuff” instead of the subject?

Two English examples for this word order:

a)

b)

Please circle the subject and the verb in the English sentences above.

You don’t have too many instances of this kind of word order in English, but in German this is a rule that always applies:

Einheit 2: Keine Panik Seite 27

Page 28: German Online Web viewLook up some information on Hamburg and Berlin (a good source is the Internet). ... The word search below uses German words for some items from the picture on

Examples:

Vor dem Kino steht eine Schlange.

Am Schalter sagt Thomas: ...

In Folge 11 of 'Keine Panik' you hear these sentences:

Nina: Dann muß ich nach Hause....Leo: Schön sieht sie aus mit den nassen Haaren.

Nina: Jetzt sehe ich natürlich aus wie eine nasse Ratte.

a) Circle the first word in each sentence above, then find the subject in each sentence and draw a box around it.

b) Let's practice this concept with some sentences from Folge 11. Rewrite the sentences by starting each sentence with the underlined word(s):

Ein Regentropfen hängt an ihrem Ohr.

Ich bringe dich dann jetzt nach Hause.

Ich könnte ihr dann den Arm um die Schulter legen.

Ich finde Kino gut.

Lektion 11a - Verb Kickers

Look at this sentence from Folge 11:

Du mußtest auch lachen, als ich dich gefragt habe, ob du Lust hast, ins Kino zu gehen.

Circle the words "als" and "ob". These words are officially called "subordinating conjunctions", but I like the term "verb kickers" better, because they kick the verb to the end of the clause. Find the verbs that belong to "als" and "ob" and draw a box around them.

Look at the sentences below and connect them with the verb kicker in brackets.

Einheit 2: Keine Panik Seite 28

4. Project Two - Steckbrief

Here is the second project for this unit (remember: there will not be a final test, instead I will give grades for three projects). I want you to write a description of yourself - auf Deutsch, natürlich!

a) To give you some ideas, I would like you to look at three of our former German III students.

Please go to our website and read the Steckbriefe of Mari, Ryan and Linda. Answer these questions:

1. Wie sieht Mari aus? (aussehen - to look like)

     2. Wo wohnt Mari?

3. Was für Hobbys hat Ryan?

4. Wie beschreibt Ryan seinen Charakter?

5. Woher kommt Linda?

6. Welche Fächer (subjects) hat Linda an ihrer Schule?

b) Now think about how you could describe yourself in German. I would like for you to include information on the following items:

Name

wie alt?

wo wohnst du?

Wie kannst du deinen Charakter beschreiben? Bist du *schüchtern, kontaktfreudig (=social), aufgeschlossen (=open), gern allein, *freundlich, nett, sexy, *gutaussehend (=good looking), intelligent, *fleißig, faul, lustig,* ruhig, tolerant, kritisch?

Was machst du gern in deiner Freizeit?

Was magst du (oder magst du nicht) an deiner Schule?

Was wirst du nach der Schule machen?

c) Now write your Steckbrief. To do that please go to our website to the "Quizzes and Test" module and find the "Steckbrief." Please proof your Steckbrief carefully. Checkfor: adjective endings, verb endings, word order.

Criteria for grading your Steckbrief will be:Vocabulary - try to not to use the same words over and overStructure - please do not just line up short "subject - verb - object" sentences. Connect some sentences with "und, oder, aber" etc. and use some "verb kickers" like "weil" and "dass" (watch out for word order with these), and vary your word order (start some sentences with something other than the subject - watch word order!)

Einheit 2: Keine Panik Seite 30

Page 31: German Online Web viewLook up some information on Hamburg and Berlin (a good source is the Internet). ... The word search below uses German words for some items from the picture on

Length - your Steckbrief should be at least 80 words and not more than 120 words.Grammar - please proof your Steckbrief carefully. If you have questions, call us!

2. Ein paar Vokabeln

a) In the second part of Folge 12 Leo uses the word "doch" several times. There is not really an English equivalent. Germans use "doch" as a positive answer to a negative statement or question, as in:

Das ist kein Problem. - Doch, das ist ein Problem. or Das ist doch ein Problem.

You can also use "doch" in a negative statement or question when you really know that the answer is positive, like Leo's father is doing:
