Speaker

Dealing with cognitively impaired geriatric patients can be challenging even for the experienced healthcare

professional. Behaviors such as dementia, aggression, anxiety and depression, refusal of food and fluids, and inappropriate sexual advances pose significant potential barriers to the delivery of essential health care. If older adults are routinely under your care, minimize your risk of escalating the problems associated with troublesome, often irrational behavior by attending this program. Gain valuable insights into the causes of challenging geriatric behaviors and learn innovative and practical intervention strategies to improve the care you provide.

Your speaker, m. Catherine Wollman, mSN, RN, GNP-BC, is an expert in the field of geriatrics. Join her for a day filled with interesting case studies, insightful discussion and interactive learning. leave with practical techniques you can apply the next day!

M. Catherine Wollman, MSN, RN, GNP-BC, has been a gerontological nurse practitioner for over 25 years, caring for older adults in acute care, long term care and home care. Currently the director of the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program at Neumann College in Aston, PA, she is responsible for teaching all clinical GNP courses. Catherine was part of an interdisciplinary geriatric assessment team, where she assessed, diagnosed, and provided health care and education to patients at all levels of dementia.

Previously, Catherine served as the director of Senior Health for a large hospital system offering a full spectrum of services including wellness, prevention, acute care, and rehabilitation. In this capacity, she managed outpatient services for seniors and cared for 100 high-risk older adults who were members of a medicare-managed program. As a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, she worked with a nationally-recognized transitional care program for high-risk older adults.Speakers disclosures:

TOP 10 Geriatric Syndromes - Clinical Management StrategiesBy Lisa Byrd, PhD, CFNP This book will present many of the expected changes caused by normal aging and the Top Ten Geriatric Syndromes elders experience. These syndromes are a cascade of problems in an elder’s health and revolve around vision and hearing problems, elimination issues, dizziness, falls, and cognitive impairment, including delirium as well as dementia (such as Alzheimer’s disease). This easy to utilize, handbook format of treatment strategies will assist healthcare providers to better identify as well as diagnose when body changes signal disease in older adults. (2011)
