FROM THE DIRECTORS’ BOXGood evening and a warm welcome to our visitors Truro City FC. We extend our hospitality to the officials, players, staff and supporters. We hope that you enjoy your time with us and have a safe journey home. A lot has happened since our last home game.We had a great first win of the season 4-1 against Walton Casuals. Although I couldn’t be at the match I was able to listen to the live commentary via Wimborne Radio and what exciting listening it was. Just a few days later Matty advised us of his decision to step aside as Manager to concentrate on developing the soccer school projects.

We are of course sorry to lose him as Manager but delighted that he will still have a big involvement within in the club and wish him the best of luck with this.We are very pleased that his brother Danny has stepped up to the Manager’s position. Danny’s first game as Manager was when we faced Truro in the FA Cup. It was a disappointing result after travelling a long distance. We had our usual FA Cup jinx when we had a goal disallowed after the referee let the game play on then to give a late decision of hand ball.We then in the final seconds were awarded a penalty but a great save was made by their keeper and resulted in a 2-1 defeat. Then the following Tuesday we met Poole town in the League Cup where both teams fielded a different side to the ones played at the weekend.

The young players on both sides played really well and gave us an excellent game of football which resulted in a 2-4 victory to us giving Danny his first win as our new Manager. Last Saturday we travelled to Beaconsfield which again was an excellent game of football and all the players played extremely well. The score here was another victory for us at 0-4 giving Danny his second win and a clean sheet.Altogether an excellent week for Danny and the team. Tonight’s game will be a tough one having lost to Truro just over a week ago in the FA Cup and they will not be making it easy for us today. We wish the lads luck and hope to see another fine game of football. Thank you and enjoy the game.

Hello everyone and welcome to our home league game v Truro, I would like to welcome the players, staff and supporters of Truro to Wimborne for the game this afternoon.

My last game in charge was a brilliant home win against Walton Casuals, it was just a shame we did not keep that clean sheet but to win 4-1 was a great way to get the first win of the season and a wonderful way for me to sign off as manager. On the Saturday evening I spoke to Graham Bell about my decision to move roles, although Graham was surprised, he was again supportive and understood my reasons but was also delighted that I would stay within the club and focus on the community projects and also the development centre projects coming up.

On the Tuesday I spoke to all the players and staff to let them know why I was moving roles, We introduced Danny as the new manager and I was delighted that Danny excepted the role as continuity in football is massive. Over the last 3 years Danny has helped build the foundations for this club and a tremendous amount of work has gone into getting us to this stage, with continuity the club and team can now really move forward under Danny.

My reasons for leaving are very simple, My remit 3 years ago was to build a football based community project for the club and keep the first team in the Southern South West, as time passed quickly, the club has been promoted into the Southern Premier, we have established many local school links, grown the holiday programmes and now opening the Development Centres and also looking to establish a college programme all this cannot be done along side the first team job. I then asked myself where I want to be in 2 years time, A Manager or developing the projects, the answer was developing projects for the club.

I never thought I would have managed a men’s side when I retired from football, and I know when I was offered the job there were some sceptics who doubted if I could, well after 3 years of history high finishes and the club getting into the Southern Premier where they have never been before and winning the Dorset Cup for the first time in a few years we didn’t do too bad!!

I must thank all the Staff, Danny, Shane, Dave, Mace, Jeff, Laurence, Ben, Peter, all the players I worked with for the 3 years plus, the board and also the supporters for their great support during my time in charge, it was a great journey which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I was asked what was my great memories while manager, there were a few but I must say, the first game in Charge when we won 4-1 v Bishops Cleeve, Taunton away 3-3 when Billy scored the free kick in injury time, Hereford away 2-2 with Toby’s penalty, our final day draw v Chesham which ensured safety for this season, the relief and reaction after the game with the supporters was incredible.

Thank you all for a fabulous 3 years….

Keep up your fabulous support

I hope you all enjoy the game this evening

Best Wishes

MattyMatty Holmes

DORSET DAVE’S CHUCKLE CORNERTruro is a city and civil parish in Cornwall, England. It is Cornwall’s county town and only city and centre for administration, leisure and retail. Truro’s population was recorded as 18,766 in the 2011 census. People from Truro are known as Truronians. The origin of Truro’s name is debated. It has been said to derive from the Cornish tri-veru meaning “three rivers”.[ The Rivers being the Kenwyne, Allen and the Truro River]. Major employers in the city include the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Cornwall Council, and Truro College. Truro’s dominent feature is the Gothic-revival cathedral, designed by architect John Loughborough Pearson, rising 249 ft (76 m) above the city at its highest spire. It took 30 years to build, from 1880 to 1910, on the site of the old St Mary’s Church, consecrated over 600 years earlier. Most of the historical locations associated with King Arthur are to be found in Cornwall. There were many knights at King Arthur’s round table, but without a doubt the fattest was Sir Cumference. He was known for eating too much pi.-----------------------------------------------------------Lancelot and Galahad walk into a Travelodge. Lancelot says, “We’d like a room for two knights, please.”-----------------------------------------------------------The purple knight was riding on his purple horse through the purple forest when he came to the purple lake. It looked inviting so he put on his purple cossie and went for a swim in the purple lake. Suddenly the purple sherrif’ and his purple men came along and told him he needed a purple licence to swim in the purple lake. As the purple knight didnt have one he was arrested by the purple sherrif, taken along the purple path, over the purple

drawbridge into the purple castle, down the purple steps to the purple dungeon. The purple sherrif opened the purple door to the purple dungeon, threw the purple knight in shouting - Indigo ! ---------------------------------------------------------It was hay making time in Cornwall and the top-heavy cart coming from the field had overturned in the lane. Its young driver looked at the fallen load in dismay.“Cum in fer a dish o’ tay”, said a motherly soul to the boy as he stood there.”We’ll give ‘e a ‘and gettin’ it right after. You’ll feel more like loadin’ again after a drink and a sit down.”“Faather won’t like un,” said the boy doubtfully.“Faather won’t knaw nowt ‘bout un,” said the woman comfortingly and led the boy, still reluctant, into the house to join her family.Half an hour later, all emerged to view the situation, the lad thanking the lady but repeating that his father wouldn’t like it at all.“Rubbish,” she said, “I’ll deal with your faather. Where’s ‘e to?”“Under the ‘ay”, said the boy. ----------------------------------------------------------One of the most famous people from Cornwall is the comedian Jethro. Here is a selection of his more printable jokes :- Alcohol killed my first wife. I got home drunk one night and shot her.

I’m not in a very good mood. I lent my wife a thousand pounds to get plastic surgery, now I can’t get the money back, and I dont even know who to look for !

I’d been out drinking until 4.15 in the morning. I was surprised to see the wife on the doorstep with a broom in her hand. I said to her “ Have you just finished the cleaning dear, or are you going out for a ride?” ----------------------------------------------------------I bought my wife a Smart car for Christmas. She said “ That’s no good to me. I want something that goes from 0 to 180 in 5 seconds.” So I bought her some bathroom scales ----------------------------------------------------------I was driving a bit fast and suddenly a police car stopped me. The officer said “ Hello Wing Commander, having a bit of trouble taking off are we ?” The officer then said “ One of your tyres are a bit bald” I said “ Sorry Officer Ive just had a puncture and had to use the spare.

Penberthy was in the car with me and he piped up “ Thats not true officer, its been like it for ages” Then the Officer said “ And what about your damaged wing mirror” I replied “ Sorry officer , I only just knocked it on the gate post coming out” Penberthy piped up again saying “ Thats not true officer, its been like it for ages “ The Officer then said “ Whats more you have a stop light out” Again Penberthy blurted out “ He’s lying again officer. I keep telling him about it” Well I couldnt contain myself anymore with Penberthy and I started effing and blinding at him, and getting into a rage. The Officer was taken aback at that and said to Penberthy “ Is he always like this” Penberthy said “ Oh no not at all officer - only when he’s drunk “

Early daysTruro City Football Club was established in 1889, becoming a funder member of the CCFA, which came into being at a meeting at the Royal Hotel in Truro on 18th September of that year.

Other Clubs present at that meeting were Porthcurno, Penzance, Probus School, Liskeard, Dunheved School, Torpoint and Millbrook. Truro City’s first recorded match was played at Truro College against Penzance on 4th October 1889, which they won 7 -1. Further games were played at Tolgarrick, adjacent to the existing Treyew Road ground and the club has also played at Kenwyn and Chapel Hill. A 5-0 victory over Launceston in 1895 brought the club’s first trophy, the Cornwall Senior Cup, which Truro City has now won 15 times.

The club initially participated in the Plymouth & District League. In 1931 they achieved one of the finest run of results in club history, playing nine games in 15 days, winning eight and drawing one. However, the club left the league that same year, along with several other Cornish Clubs, after a dispute over payment of Devon Clubs’ travelling expenses. City joined the newly formed Cornwall Senior League, winning it in 1932 and 1933. However, disappointing gates in the new league saw City rejoining the Plymouth & District League in 1934 and won the title in 1937.Departure from the Cornwall Senior League led to the club being barred from entering the Cornwall Senior Cup. The CCFA refused a proposal for the club’s reserve team to enter the competition and City were only re-admitted 1938 (they won the Senior Cup in their first season back).

The club has also won the Durning Lawrence Charity Cup, which Truro City gave to the county, 11 times, the first in 1912 and the last in 1981.

The South Western and Combination League yearsTruro City was one of the founder members of the South Western League, which was formed in 1951. However, the club did not meet with immediate success, having to seek re-election for the first two seasons. They have had to seek re-election twice more, in 1982 and 1983. Their first championship came in 1960/61 and they have been champions four times since: 1969/70, 1992/93, 1995/96 and 1997/98.

The South Western League Cup has come to Treyew Road on three occasions: 1959/60, 1966/67 and 1997/98. The League’s Sporting Trophy was won in 1974/75 and 1988/89 and the Best Ground Trophy in 1995/96. City were forced to leave the South Western League at the end of the 1974/75 season as the Treyew Road ground had been part a road-widening scheme and it was 1978 before they were re-admitted.

The club won the Cornwall Combination League title in 1994/95, 1998/99, 2005/6 and 2007/8 and the Combination League Cup on nine occasions: 1968, 1978, 1987, 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005/6 and 2007/8. The Evely Cup has been won seven times: 1968, 1978, 1986, 1988, 1999, 2000 and 2005/06.

Promotion and a trip to WembleyIn late 2004, the club was acquired by a new owner and in 2005/06 the club ended the season as runners-up, winning promotion to the Toolstation Western League.

The 2006/07 season was the most successful in the Club’s history: winning the Toolstation Western League First Division by a record margin at the first attempt, retaining the Cornwall Senior Cup and winning the FA Vase at the new Wembley Stadium with a 3-1 win over AFC Totton

Poole Town 3-1 Wimborne Town(Baker 59′ 73′ Dennett 86′)(Roberts 38′)Att: 77Saturday 14th September – Southern League Premier Division South

Beaconsfield’s bowling-green surface, bathed in sunshine, was the setting for another entertaining game of attacking football, as four goals and a clean sheet saw Wimborne claim their first away league victory of the season.

Caretaker Manager Danny Holmes retained Tony Lee in his starting XI as he kept faith with the team who so nearly earned a draw at Truro in the FA Cup. And the striker justified his selection with a first-half brace which gave the Magpies the platform for this comprehensive victory.

Despite being rooted to the foot of the league table, Beaconsfield’s two most recent games were cup victories. Although a Luke Burbidge

run was followed by two corners, it was the home side who nearly seized the initiative on 8 minutes. Reece Yorke’s shot from the edge of the box was diverted by James McCluskey’s outstretched foot for the ball to cannon off Cameron Plain’s crossbar. But that was the closest The Rams would come to scoring.

Franklyn Clarke’s drive from distance was blocked; a flowing move ended with home keeper Myles Bowman making the first of many super saves to deny Sam Bayston, and another Burbidge jinking run saw his shot go wide.

As Wimborne built pressure, their deserved first goal came just before the mid-point of the half. It started with a sliding interception by Sam Davidson. The ball was quickly moved down the left to Bayston who found Lee centrally on the edge of the box, and his precision shot beat the diving Bowman to nestle in the corner of the net.

After a long build-up Beaconsfield’s Ade Shokunbi fired over, and Clarke threw his body in the way of another Beaconsfield shot, but it was no real surprise when the Magpies doubled their lead on 27 minutes - given our record this season, the only surprise is that it came from a corner - Lee rising to head home Burbidge’s in-swinger from the left.

Another Clarke block and another Davidson interception exemplified Wimborne’s resistance, but the eye-catching action was at the other end. Bayston twisted and turned on 33 minutes, Bowman made a great catch under pressure from another Burbidge corner (one of 8 in the first half), and Bayston was blatantly body-checked as a quick break threatened the home goal.

After the re-start, we expected the home side to come out all guns blazing. But it was the visitors who immediately regained the initiative. After Bayston was clattered, Davidson headed Burbidge’s free-kick into the arms of Bowman; the keeper then made a diving save at the foot of the post to deny Burbidge; Lee’s shot from distance earned a corner; the striker’s header from Clarke’s precise cross was saved; skipper Billy Maybury’s 30-yard free-kick whistled past the post; before Lee, on a charge down the middle, was flattened by the home skipper - referee Bolland, who had an excellent game, decided the offence was only worth a yellow card.

Wimborne’s third goal came on 70 minutes. Clever interplay on the right between Curtis Young and Burbidge, ended with Maybury racing on to Burbs’ audacious back-heel only to be brought down. Stef Penny confidently despatched the penalty into the corner.

Moments later Burbidge raced back to stop a Beaconsfield attack, and initiate a quick counter with an incisive pass. Sam Poole was next to test the home defence, firing against the bar from a well-delivered Burbidge free-kick, then somehow heading the rebound wide from close-range (from what Harry Redknapp said, his missus would have buried that chance!) Penny came forward on 75 minutes, and his fierce drive from 30 yards was brilliantly saved by the diving Bowman in the top corner.

Plain made two good sprawling saves as Beaconsfield sought a consolation, before Wimborne’s final goal on 86 minutes. Clarke and Bayston combined to set-up Burbidge who scampered around his defenders to score across keeper Bowman.

Four goals and a clean sheet in warm sunshine - Saturday afternoons don’t come much better than that!

Next up it’s second-placed Truro City at Cuthbury on Tuesday.

Att: 263Saturday 31st August – Southern League Premier

At last! The Cuthbury faithful had patiently waited over 4 hours to see Wimborne’s first home goal of the new campaign, and then four came in the space of 22 minutes. After a cagey, goalless first half, the Magpies took control after the visiting Stags were reduced to ten men, nine minutes after the restart.

Manager Matty Holmes made three changes to his starting XI bringing in Sam Davidson, Stefan Penny and Curtis Young.

Given that they had lost their first four league games, the visitors stroked the ball around confidently from the first whistle. Luke Burbidge shot weakly over the bar in Wimborne’s first attack, but the first real chance of the

game came at the other end, centre-back Jay Gasson heading over from a free-kick on the left corner of the box on 12 minutes. The visitors’ centre-forward, Jermaine Howe, was a real handful all afternoon, and a minute later his shot was well blocked.

Following a good build-up, Luke Burbidge played Young through on the right, and his effort crashed into the side-netting. On 17 minutes a lofted pass found Josh Buck marauding down the left, and his well-controlled volley was saved at full length by Alex Tokarczyk. The nearest to a goal in the first period was from Jude Mason’s header on 20 minutes. The Stags’ left-back timed his run perfectly to connect with a cross from the right, Cameron Plain tipping the ball onto the bar.

Not for the first time this season passes began to go astray, and that necessary quality was lacking in the final third. In midfield, Connor Doe caught your reporter’s eye as he broke up Stags’ attacks, tidied up, and put his body on the line. Sam Poole was having another good game at the heart of the defence, and the quick-thinking Plain was acting as a sweeper/keeper behind the back-line.

Young’s inviting ball across the face of The Stags’ goal just before half-time found no taker, but it wasn’t a great surprise that we reached the interval without a goal.

Billy Maybury got the second-half

underway with an aggressive charge down the right, moments before, at the other end, Franklyn Clarke had to rescue his defence after Plain was beaten as he rushed from his goal. However, the young keeper was in the right place to save Rohdell Gordon’s stinging shot on 48 minutes. Burbidge, feeding off Penny’s pass, had a low shot well-saved by the tall Tokarczyk just before the moment that changed the course of the game.

Racing on to Burbidge’s through ball in the inside-left channel, Penny was about to pull the trigger at the edge of the box when Manolis Gogonas brought him down. Referee Jenkins had no hesitation in bringing out his red card. Kieran Roberts ‘free-kick beat the wall, but not the keeper.

And that was the signal for the game to burst into action. Penny’s shot from Young’s cross was blocked, Burbidge’s corner fell at the feet of Roberts, but following a quick turn, he only found the hospital car park. At the other end, Nathan Webb shot wide when well-placed, and a Stags’ free-kick went into the defensive wall after Gordon’s mazy run drew a foul. Clarke’s cross-field ball found Penny, and his rasping drive flew inches wide of the left-hand post.As Wimborne ramped up the pressure, they took the lead on 66 minutes. Young’s low cross from the right was side-footed home by Burbidge from 12 yards – a cue for exuberant celebrations on and off the field. Two minutes later, Burbidge bagged his second. Buck’s tackle won

the ball in midfield, and Burbidge did the rest. His jinking run took him past two defenders before sliding the ball past the keeper.

Manager Holmes brought on two attackers, Tony Lee and Sam Bayston, as The Magpies sensed more goals. Lee charged towards the visitors’ goal before firing over from 25 yards. In the next attack, Burbidge’s low cross from the right was converted by Sam Bayston. At the other end, Plain made a super save low down by his post after Howe had been gifted the ball. Then it was The Stags’ defence’s turn to gift the ball – this time to Lee just inside their half. And the striker had only one thing on his mind. He raced clear of the defenders before coolly slotting past Tokarczyk on 87 minutes.

Wimborne lost concentration as the clock ticked over into added-on time, and substitute Brendan Murphy-Mcvey lobbed Plain to pull one back. But by then the game was well won.

A welcome first win for the Magpies, but it could be a tough campaign for The Stags and their cheerful supporters who were a real credit to their club.

Att: 363Saturday 7th September – Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round

Danny Holmes’ first game in charge ended in heartbreak for The Magpies and their travelling supporters. A controversially disallowed “goal” and a brilliant penalty save in time added-on denied them a second equaliser that their spirited display deserved.

With Josh Buck, Joe Byrne and Connor Doe unavailable, manager Holmes gave starts to Stef Penny, Carl Pettefer, Curtis Young and Sam Bayston, but was only able to fill four of the seven substitute slots.

In a cagey opening ten minutes, Penny, playing on the left, had the first shot – an effort from distance that whistled past keeper James Hamon’s far post. A first fluent Wimborne move ended when Bayston was crowded out before he could get a shot away. However, the visitors’ confident start was undone on 11 minutes. A Truro free-kick, from half-

way in Wimborne’s half on the right, was floated to the back post where defender James Ward rose highest to head home.

The White Tigers then played the ball around comfortably – a corner was repelled on 14 minutes before Moulaye Ndiaye’s 20-yard shot was well held by Cameron Plain. Manager Holmes had to make his first substitution on 19 minutes when a struggling Kieran Roberts had to go off, to be replaced by Tony Lee.

But three minutes later, the Magpies were back on level terms. Some Luke Burbidge trickery saw him get to the by-line on the right, and his pull-back was swept into the far corner by Bayston from 10 yards for his second goal in two games.

Noah Keats and Will Dean in Truro’s midfield caught the eye, while skipper Jamie Richards caressed the ball forward from left-back, but Wimborne pressed with energy and disrupted their play – exemplified by Lee’s long chase to force a throw-in deep into their half.

On 33 minutes a clever Burbidge flick resulted in Hamon’s save from Lee’s shot. From the corner, Young’s rocket from the edge of the box had “goal” written all over it until it hit Lee and cannoned over the bar. Play flowed from end to end – Niall Thompson’s quick turn and low shot forced a fine save from Plain before Lee picked his defender’s pocket to start another attack.

Although guilty of giving the ball away in midfield, Wimborne finished the half well – good work down the right resulted in a cross by Young; Davidson made a vital sliding tackle on Thompson in the area,

and Burbidge conjured a 25-yard volley out of nothing only to see it flash inches wide of the post.

Truro came looking for a second goal after the break. Richards fired well over from distance; Pettefer had to concede a corner, which Plain punched away; and Sam Poole reacted quickest to clear after a deflection in the box; before Dean’s curler from the edge of the box hit the top of Plain’s post. At the other end, Young’s low cross from Burbidge’s pass saw keeper Hamon make a sprawling gather, but that was a brief respite from Truro pressure.

Plain made another good save at his near post as Thompson came in from the left; then, under pressure, the young keeper punched away a corner; before Poole headed away a long throw-in. Then, on 67 minutes, Truro restored their lead. There seemed little danger as a high ball came down the middle. Plain rushed out of his goal to clear, only to slip at a vital moment, and substitute player-manager Stewart Yetton was able to run the ball into the unguarded net.

Wimborne weren’t going to take this lying down. Successive corners on the right forced defensive blocks moments before, on 69 minutes, referee Kane made a vital decision. Burbidge’s low cross from the right was slid home from 5 yards at the far post by Sam Poole. After signalling a goal, the Referee was persuaded to talk to his Assistant, and. after a long discussion, he changed his decision – apparently for a hand-ball in the build-up.

A strong arm from Plain kept out another Thompson effort, and the young keeper

produced a great diving save to deny substitute Louis Rooney. Sam Davidson was inches away from connecting with a Burbidge free-kick which Lee struck into the side-netting from an acute angle. A brave block by Penny resulted in a corner which Ward headed over, and Plain grabbed the ball after some “pinball” in his area.

As the clock ticked over into time added-on, and Burbidge sent another corner into the Truro box, Referee Kane spotted an infringement and pointed to the spot. Lee’s well-hit penalty was brilliantly saved by keeper Hamon. There was still time for one more great save from Plain, tipping over Rooney’s shot before a final blast of the whistle brought this pulsating cup-tie to an end.

Wimborne’s travelling supporters stayed to applaud their heroes off the pitch. Yes, we were knocked out of the Cup at the first attempt, but this was a spirited effort against the team second in the league and deserved a replay.

A special mention to our two coach drivers, Darren and Bryan, who were fantastic in difficult circumstances.
