GEP Model 1 1

The FGCU General Education Program requires students to complete 36 credit hours from the following subject areas:

• Communication 6 hours• Mathematics 6 hours• Humanities 9 hours• Social Sciences 6-9 hours• Natural Sciences 6-9 hours

To fulfill FGCU’s General Education Civic Identity* requirement, students must complete XX hours of General Education courses marked with the Civic Identity designation. Students may fulfill the Civic Identity requirement by participating in XX hours of study abroad.

*“Civic identity is a multifaceted and dynamic notion of the self as belonging to and responsible for a community or communities” (Mitchell, et al., “Programs that Build Civic Identity: A Study of Alumni,” Diversity & Democracy: Civic Learning for Shared Futures 16.3 [Summer 2013]: 22).

9/30/13 Town Hall Feedback

• We need to work some majors through these models (especially science and engineering) to make certain that students can complete their coursework.

• Assure distribution of the competencies in both models.

• e.g., Model 2 – Can a Chem. major fulfill 9 CHM hours, 3 in Natural Sciences, 3 in Critical Thinking, and 3 in Quantitative Reasoning?

• We should not roll out one distribution model and then change it down the road (adding the EYE in later).

• Entering Year Experience:

• resources for teaching the course?

• faculty who will teach the course and their qualifications?

• process for defining the nature of the course?

• course section size?

Proposed GEC Tasks

• Choose a GEP model based on Town Hall feedback.

• Run test majors through the model.

• Create learning objectives for the Civic Identity competency.

• Begin outlining the nature of the Entering Year Experience.
