DeltaBase 505Multipurpose Drill Rig

CapabilitiesThe Deltbase 505 is designed for the followinggeotechnical applications:

1. Coring:

• Wireline coring systems

• Conventional core barrel systems

• Undisturbed sampling and testing - canbe used with SPT (automatic SPT system issupplied as standard on the DB520), Shelbythin wall tube sampler and hydraulic pistonsampler (with 50 mm drill pipe).

2. Geotechnical Investigation - using rotaryand rotary percussive systems for anchors,micro-piles and high-pressure injection systems.

3. Micro-piling – holes for water wells orpiezometer installation can be drilled using:

• Tricone roller bits – in the range from95mm up to 260mm diameter

• Auger drilling – depending on prevailingground conditions, holes can be drilled downto 30m with 176mm diameter augers

• Porousity / permeability testing – it ispossible to use inflatable packers orconventional packers with screw type,expandable rubber seals.

Note: This drill can be supplied with a HydraulicHammer mounted on the rotary head for directpercussion drilling.

Mobility: The compact size and low weight ofthe machine makes transportation by road asimple procedure and the narrow width allowsaccess into confined spaces. As an option, thestandard 750mm wide rubber crawlers can bereplaced with telescopic crawlers extendable upto 1000mm. The drill rig can be powered byeither diesel engine or electric motors.

Stability: Stabilising cylinders are fitted at eachcorner of the rig. They can be operatedindependently and swung out to improve stabilityduring the drilling operation.

Drill Mast: The standard drill mast is a modularmast fitted with a top mounted feed motor. Thestandard stroke is 1700mm but lengths of 1000,1500 or 2400mm can be supplied on request.Sections of the modular mast can be added orremoved to suit any height restrictions that mayapply. Where required, a fixed length mast withhydraulic feed cylinder can be supplied.

The mast rotates through 360 degrees. Ahydraulic cylinder rotates the mast through 45degrees either side of vertical and additionalrotation is achieved by moving the cylinder eyeend round to additional attachment points.Themast has a dump cylinder to compensate foruneven ground conditions.

Bottom Clamp: A clamping system is fitted atthe bottom of the mast with maximum clampingdiameter of 140mm. The clamping force can beadjusted by a pressure control valve. Anoptional thread breaking device can be fitted.

Rotary Head: The floating spindle type rotaryhead has two Danfoss hydraulic motors that canbe changed hydraulically between series orparallel operation.

Engine: The hydraulic system is powered by aHatz Silent Pack diesel engine rated at 78 dB ata distance of 7m.

Hydraulic System: Consists of a variabledelivery piston pump with fixed power rating forrotation and crawlers and a gear pump for thefeed motor, servo controls and other functions.Proportional valves are used in the hydrauliccontrols for precision of operation and load-sensing valves are utilised for maximumhydraulic efficiency. All main cylinders are fittedwith non-return valves.

A temperature-sensing device, switches on aheat exchanger automatically and a lightilluminates on the control panel when the heatexchanger operates. A suction filter protects thehydraulic system with automatic cloggingindicator on the control panel.

Control Panel: The fixed position control panelis located on the side of the rig. All controls areergonomically grouped on the panel and inaddition to the standard drilling controls; anemergency safety button is included.

Deltabase 535 Drill RigThe DeltaBase 535 drill rig is designed foroptimum performance for:

The DB 535 is a multipurpose diesel hydraulicdrill rig with capacity to drill Geotechnical andEnvironmental investigation holes using Auger,casing, rock roller bit, DTH hammer and wire-line percussion tools.

The rig is able to handle tool sizes from 4” to 8”diameter with a depth rating of 60 metre fordrilling with casing and 150 metre for rotarydrilling.

High speed / High torque heads are available fordrilling with core drilling equipment in all sizes upto SQ size.

Fully equipped with the Boart Longyear Tool-O-Matic set-up this rig is one man operated. TheDrill mast is turned 90° allowing the operator fullaccess to the flat and drilling line.

The drilling tools are located on the flat inhydraulic operated elevators and conveyers. Inthe centre line is mounted a manual drill pipeloading frame. All routine operations arepossible within an arm length of the operator.This revolutionary design is fully protected bypatent.

All drilling operations are electrically operatedfrom a cable remote control. SAUER DANFOSSand REXROTH supply all hydraulic valves,motors and pumps. The electrical systemprovides full control during making and breakingthe threads.

The rig is equipped with an emergency shutdown system that shuts down the entire powersupply.

The DeltaBase 730 drill rig is designed foroptimum performance for:

The DeltaBase 730 has the followingspecifications:

Fully equipped with the Tool-O-Matic set-up thisrig is one man operated. The Drill mast isturned 90° allowing the operator full access tothe flat and drilling line.

The drilling tools are located on the flat and ahandling winch is mounted at a 3,6 mhydraulically operated JIB BOOM with capacityto swing 360° continuously around the mast andlift up 90° from guide mast over the pipe carriageflat.

Single Tube Core Barrel Type B

This single tube core barrel is a thin kerf system availabe in a range of sizes up to 146 mm. Itsrecommended for use only in homogeneous formations, due to the direct contact of the flushing mediumwith the core. A full range of drill bits are also available for all sizes.

How to Order: To order a Single Tube Type B core barrel assembly, select the assembly based on thesize required then select the required length and order based on the part number. The assemblycomprises the head, outer tube, core lifter and blank reaming shell.

PQ Corebarrel

Boart Longyear’s has made substantial improvements to itstried and tested PQ Corebarrel. The PQ Head Assembly hasundergone substantial design change to make it even morereliable and also user friendly. These changes are mostlyincorporated in the New PQ Head Assembly and can reviewedin the next section. The PQ Corebarrel can be used with HWTor PQ drill rods. HWT Drill rods are recommended for all PQdrilling applications, they result in extra strength and reliability.The PQ Head Assembly consists of the head assembly (item1), inner tube components (item 2-5), and outer tubecomponents (item6-11). • Lighter head assembly for ease and safety whenhandling. 21 Kg New Head Assembly Vs. 40 Kg OldHead Assembly.

• Uses a lot of standard "NextQ" HQ Head Assemblycomponents so can be easily converted to a HQ head.(conversion kits available). This means substantiallyreduced costs to carry inventory of PQ and HQ drillingsystems.

• Incorporates the reliable “NextQ” link-latch design(patented) built on standard HQ components.

• Features a hollow spindle and landing shoulder flats forfast descent (patent pending), a considerableadvantage with greater depth.

• Standard dry hole valve for latch indication / fluidretention / and fluid drainage when pulling. Withvarious drop-in springs for pressure control.

• Optional dry hole lowering kit in which the overshotremains locked until the tube head is latched

• Enlarged latch body porting for use with high viscositydrilling fluids and lost circulation materials.

Geotech SQ Overshotand In-shot Assembly

The components of the Geotech SQ Overshot Assembly andthe In-shot Assembly are outlined in the table below. The In-shot is necessary for drilling in dry hole situations, it ensuresthat the inner tube assembly can be lowered safely to the corebarrel without the risk of it unlatching during descent, thepressure required to un-latch the in-shot is adjustable bymeans of a spring. Torque:

For maximum thread joint life and maximum performance,drill rods must be pre-torqued to the minimum recommendedmake-up torque to pre-load the box and pin prior to drilling.The drilling torque alone is not sufficient to make up the joint.Drilling operation torque should not exceed the make-up torque.

Thread Compound:

Boart Longyear recommends using Z-50 Thread Compound(p/n 306486), to reduce wear and the possibility of threadgalling during drilling operations. Drill rods are shipped with thread lubrication already applied.

Packaging:• Drill rods are packed and sold in bundles; this offers better product protection during shipping and

Metric Flush Joint Casing

Boart Longyear offers a range of flush jointed casing, primarily used tostabilize the walls of the drill hole in difficult ground conditions. The casinghas right-hand male and female threading at opposite ends. MetricCasing is most commonly used in shallow drill holes in typicalgeotechnical drilling applications usually in complement with MetricCoring Tools, (Section 3). Metric casing is manufactured from cold drawnseamless steel tubing with material specifications exceeding DCDMAspecifications.

Boart Longyear offers Metric Casing in the lengths and sizes as detailedbelow, however other sizes and lengths are also available on request.

The WJ drill rod is a non-wireline drill rod primarily used in conventional diamond core drillingapplications, soil investigations and rotary drilling. PCD materials are synthetic diamond particles on a tungsten carbide substrate. Fast, cost effective andaccurate. PCD Bits offer high penetration rate, longer bit life and lower cost per metre in very soft tomedium – hard sedimentary, competent formations. Fully exposed cutters achieve higher penetrationrates than Surface Set or TSD Bits. Cutters are available in different sizes and geometry. BoartLongyear’s erosion resistant matrix and bit gauge protection with natural diamond ensure a highperformance and accurate hole size, minimising the cost per metre.

TSD DIAMOND BIT

TSD material is a thermally stable polycrystalline diamond compact. TSD cutters are available in differentsizes and geometry. TSD Bit designs currently available in two standards profiles “Semiround” and “SawTooth” offer a good penetration rate, long life and low cost per metre in soft to hard sedimentary andmetamorphic formations. Tungsten Carbide Bits

In softer formations such as slate, soft shales,soft sandstone and limestone, a tungstencarbide bit may be used.

The cutting face of this type bit is inset with smalloctagonal inserts of tungsten carbide (TC) alloy.The inserts may be re-sharpened using acarbide-grinding wheel.

Depending on the formation, the size of theTungsten Carbide insert could be changed inorder to enhance the drilling capabilities.Tungsten carbide bits are used with a saw toothor flat face profile. The saw tooth profile issuitable for drilling in tightly compacted soil. Theflat face profile is used in soft shales and softrock.

IADC ClassificationRock bits are classified according to the IADC(International Association of Drilling Contractors)code by using 3 digits:

First Digit:Numbers 1,2 and 3 designate steel tooth bits andcorrespond to increasing formation hardness.

Numbers 4,5,6,7 and 8 designate bits with tungstencarbide inserts and also correspond to increasingformation hardness.

Second Digit:Number 1,2,3 and 4 denote a sub-classification ofthe formation hardness in each of the eight classesdetermined by the first digit.

Geotech Water Swivels

Boart Longyear offers a range of Geotech Water Swivels designed for reliability and durability, they canbe used with water and drilling fluids. The water swivel permits circulation of fluid through the drill rodstring while the rods are drilling or suspended on the hoist line. Hoisting of the drill string over shortdistances is also possible with the hoisting bail. Water swivels are available in a range of sizes up to10,000 Kg Static Load capacity. The complete water swivel assembly as detailed below is very easy toassemble and maintain at the drill site. Features include a heavy cap with hoisting bail, double row of ballbearings for heavy thrust loads and V-packing that is easily replaceable.

Shelby Tube Sampler

The Shelby Tube Sampler is a thin wall “in-situ” sampling system, designed to take undisturbed samplesin cohesive type clays and soils. The head section contains a drill rod box connection at one end andincorporates a check valve for vacuum control. The thin wall sample tube is attached to the head bymeans of three cap screws. The head features a machined shoulder, when sampling the tube seatsfirmly against the shoulder, this ensures that the sampling force is applied uniformly. The sampler shouldbe pressed into the formation by application of steady pressure until the tube is full or the point of refusalis achieved. The tube should be removed from the head and capped for testing at a later stage. The thinwall sample tubes are available in the standard length of 701 mm; other lengths can be provided onrequest.

It is often used to determine bearing capacity of soils as required forStandard Penetration Tests. Denison Double Tube Sampler

The Denison Sampler is designed for taking undisturbed samples in soils and easily eroded materialsthat have a potential to wash out during sampling. The double tube, swivel type core barrel is able toobtain undisturbed samples from soft materials as well as hard soils where pressures required would betoo great to push or even drive thin wall samplers.

During sampling the inner tube shoe is pressed firmly against the formation while the outer tube isrotated. To protect the sample, the inner tube remains stationary at all times. The inner tube contains athin plastic liner to preserve sample integrity during sampling and handling out of the test hole. Thesample is retained in the sampler liner either by wall friction or with a basket retainer.

This equipment is inter-changeable with the K3 Double Tube Core Barrel with the exception of the bitand core lifter. These are replaced with a thin kerf bit / outer shoe and basket type retainer.

The split-spoon sampler connected to the drillrods, is lowered into the hole after the hole has been cleaned out and the waterlevel has settled. The automatic hammer falls on the driving rod head so that thetube is driven 15 cm into the layer (to avoid interference zones) and the spoonis driven 30cm. The number of blows is counted for each stretch of 15cm.

The groundwater monitoring packer is a low pressure, sliding-end style packer constructed of inertmaterials. It is available for 1 ½” inch and larger casing and is designed for use above or below airlift,bladder, electric or piston sampling pumps to reduce purge time and volume. Inclinometer System

Slope Indicators Digitilt inclinometers are used tomonitor lateral movements in embankments andlandslide areas, deflections of retaining walls andpiles, and deformations of excavation walls, tunnels,and shafts.

Operation

Inclinometer casing is typically installed in a nearvertical borehole that passes through suspectedzones of movement into stable ground. The Digitiltinclinometer probe, control cable, pulley assembly,and readout are used to survey the casing. The firstsurvey establishes the initial profile of the casing.Subsequent surveys reveal changes in the profile if ground movement occurs. During a survey, theprobe is drawn upwards from the bottom of the casing to the top, halted in its travel at half-meterintervals for tilt measurements. Plotting the cumulative changes at each measurement interval yields ahigh-resolution displacement profile. Displacement profiles are useful for determining the magnitude,depth, direction, and rate of ground movement.

Digitilt® Control Cable

Digitilt control cable is used to control the depth of the inclinometer probe, it also conducts power andsignals between the probe and the readout. Depth marks are vulcanised onto cable jacket. Steel corewire controls stretching. Binder layer eliminates slipping of cable jacket relative to core wire. Torsionbraid counters cable torque. The neoprene cable jacket resists chemicals and abrasion.

DigiTilt DataMate Readout Unit

The Digitilt DataMate records data from inclinometer probes and stores up to 40 complete inclinometersurveys. It is capable of powering a Digitilt inclinometer for 16 hours. The DataMate is designed for harduse in difficult environments. Electronic components are rated for extended temperatures. Connectorsockets are located on the face panel, away from contact with mud, water, or snow.

Water Level Indicator

Standpipe piezometers are used to monitorpiezometric water levels in soils and rock.Typical applications include:

• Monitoring pore-water pressure todetermine the stability of slopes,embankments, and landfill dikes

• Monitoring ground improvementtechniques such as vertical drains,sand drains, and dynamic compaction

• Monitoring dewatering schemes forexcavations and underground openings

Operation

The standpipe piezometer system comprises a sealed standpipe tube connected to a porous element,the filter tip. The filter tip is placed at the desired zone and a bentonite plug is placed above the zone toisolate it from the other layers. Water now enters the installation through the filter tip making it possible totake readings by lowering a dip meter from ground level.

A sound can be heard as soon as the dip meter encounters the water level. The graduated tape with cmmarkings gives the operator an indication of the water depth.

Limitations and Advantages

The standpipe piezometer offers a low cost alternative to borehole pressure transducers and is simple toread. In case of multiple installations and a need for a high reading frequency, borehole pressuretransducers offer lower operating costs.

VW Piezometers

The VW piezometer converts water pressure to afrequency signal via a diaphragm, a tensioned steelwire, and an electro-magnetic coil. The piezometer isdesigned so that a change in pressure on thediaphragm causes a change in tension of the wire.When excited by the electro-magnetic coil, the wirevibrates at its natural frequency. The vibration of thewire in the proximity of the magnetic coil generates afrequency signal that is transmitted to the readoutdevice. The readout device processes the signal,and displays a reading.

Magnetic Extensometer

Displacement and especially settlement along an axisof a measuring tube (or borehole) can be measured bymeans of a magnetic probe extensometer.Monitoring settlement and heave can be very critical inexcavation, foundations, earth dams andembankments. Data from the extensometer providesan indication of settlement per measuring point, aswell as total settlement.

Operation

The magnetic extensometer system exists out of a magnetic probe, a measuring tape, a tape reel withbuilt in light and buzzer and a number of measuring rings positioned at distinct intervals along the lengthof an access pipe. Readings can be obtained by lowering the extensometer probe trough the access pipeto the depth of the measuring rings equipped with magnets.

When the probe enters the magnetic field, a reed switch closes, activating the light and buzzer. Theactual depth of the measuring ring is established from the measuring tape onto which the extensometerprobe is connected and which is graduated with cm markings. When the access pipe is anchored instable ground, the depth of each measuring ring is referred to a “datum” magnet reading that is fixed tothe bottom of the access pipe.

Installation

Access tube is used to install magnets and provide a means of lowering the probe. If possible the accesstube should be installed into stable ground making it possible to use a datum magnet as the referencereading. A datum magnet is used in installations that are anchored in stable ground and are placed at thebottom of the installation. The settlement of each measuring point is referenced to the datum magnet. Incase of earth fills or the construction of embankments, plate magnets should be used. The plate magnet,measuring 300x300mm and incorporating a magnetic ring, is placed around the access tube and platemagnets are added as construction proceeds. For installation in boreholes spider magnets are used.During installation the spring-steel legs are compressed and released at the installation depth.
