Tami Audia, formerly the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maryland, was named head volleyball coach at Georgia State University on April 14, 2010. In addition to two sea-

sons at Maryland, Audia served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for a highly-successful pro-gram at the University of Dayton, which earned four NCAA Tournament berths in her five years there. In five seasons at Dayton (2003-07), Audia helped head coach Tim Horsmon lead the Flyers to unprecedented success. The Flyers won the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament and reached the NCAA Tournament four out of five years (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007), the first confer-ence titles and NCAA berths in school history. In her final season, the Flyers were ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll before finishing with a 33-2 record. Audia was part of a coaching staff that produced four consecutive A-10 Players of the Year (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), back-to-back Atlantic 10 Setters of the Year (2005, 2006), two A-10 Rookies of the Year (2003, 2007), four A-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Players (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007), 16 all-conference performers and eight AVCA hon-orable mention All-Americans. A former collegiate setter, Audia worked directly with the Flyers’ setters, tutoring 2005 A-10 Setter of the Year Nicole Schott and 2006 honoree Erin Schroeder, who also earned honorable mention all-America accolades. At Dayton, Audia built a reputation as an outstanding recruiter, assembling three straight recruiting classes that were ranked among the nation’s top 30 by PrepVolleyball.com. Her first full recruiting class at Dayton in 2004 was rated No. 28, followed by a No. 30 ranking in 2005 and then a No. 22 national ranking for the Flyers’ 2006 class. In 2008, Audia moved with Horsmon to Maryland, and she was promoted to associate head coach for the 2009 season. Audia earned her bachelor’s degree in sport manage-ment from Xavier in 2001. She was a standout setter for the Musketeers, earning All-Atlantic 10 Conference hon-ors as a senior, when she ranked seventh in the nation in assists per game. The two-time team captain led Xavier to an average of nearly 20 wins per season in her four-year career. Audia began her coaching career in 2001 with the 14 Open team at the Cincinnati Mizuno Classics. She then coached the Delaware (Ohio) High School team in 2002. A native of Pontiac, Ill., Audia was inducted into the Pontiac Township High School Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2009-10 last May.

AUDIA OPENS CAREER ON RIGHT FOOT

Head coach Tami Audia began her career with three straight wins as the Panthers claimed the GSU Invitational. Audia became the first GSU coach since Richard Leonard in 1998 to win the first three matches of their career.

GIVING THE FANS THEIR MONEY’S WORTH

The fans were treated to exciting volleyball in the opening GSU Invitational as the Panthers won the tournament after defeat-ing Morehead State, North Florida and Wright State. In all three matches, GSU had to come from behind to win. In the opening match against the Eagles, GSU trailed two sets to one. Against the Ospreys it dropped the first set before winning the remaining three. The biggest thriller was in the tournament finale, however, as GSU trailed two sets to none and was down 24-22 in the third set before rallying all the way back to claim the title.

SETTING HER SIGHTS HIGH

Junior setter Chelsea Perry has started the year strong breaking her career record in assists with 51 against Morehead State and tying that 51 against Wright State. She currently sits third in the CAA with 9.06 assists per set. The Cincinnati, Ohio native also re-cently moved to ninth in GSU history for career assists with 1,144.

KANGWA SERVING AWAY

Junior Muki Kangwa has picked up right where she left off last season with service aces. Through nine matches, she has 14 aces which puts her seventh in the CAA with an average of 0.41 per set. Kangwa had 13 at the Titan Classic to earn all-tournament honors.

The Fort Myers, Fla., native was tops in the CAA in service aces per set last year with 0.42 and was 33rd in the NCAA.

VERDUN EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS AGAIN

During her GSU career redshirt junior Vineece Verdun has shown a knack for earning regular season all-tournament honors and it has not changed so far this year. In the GSU Invitational Verdun was named the MVP of the tournament after producing 49 kills in three matches. Verdun earned CAA co-Player of the Week acco-lades for her efforts. So far this season, Verdun currently sits sec-ond in the conference in hitting percentage (.345) and kills per set (3.63), while she is first in overall kills (127). Verdun also leads the CAA in points scored at 156 for an average of 4.46 per game.

Last season after helping lead the Panthers to titles at the Elon Challenge and the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge, the Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native earned all-tournament honors at the Illinois-Chicago Invitational. Verdun also earned CAA Offensive Player of the Week accolades after a 15-kill performance against Ken-nesaw State and a 16-kill, four block performance against UNC Wilmington, both wins for GSU.

THE OPENING SERVE

DIGGING HER WAY TO THE TOP

Besides already being tops in GSU history for digs in a season (531, 2009), digs per set in a season (4.74, 2009) and digs per set in a career (3.76), senior Audrey Cantrell is third all-time in digs for a career at 1,316. The Rockwall, Texas native is just 58 digs from second place and 312 from first place.

ATTACKING THE OPPOSITION

Senior Ashley Jones has become proficient throughout her ca-reer in attacks and kills. The San Diego, Calif., native moved up to seventh for most attack attempts in GSU history earlier this season at 2,529 and is just out of the top 10 in kills at 849.

PERFORMING UNDER PRESSURE

Freshman Emily Averbeck has come in and been a key asset to the Panthers so far this season, tallying 67 kills and nine service aces. In GSU’s comeback win over Wright State, Averbeck served the last six points as the Panthers won 3-2.

FREEMAN TRYING TO TOP FRESHMAN YEAR

Sophomore Jamiee Freeman earned CAA All-Rookie team acco-lades last season after finishing second on the team in digs and fourth in kills. Her finest effort might have been in a win over Hofstra where she recorded 31 digs and 10 kills to earn CAA De-fensive Player of the Week honors. She ended the season on a strong note producing double-digit dig totals in 13 of the last 14 matches. She is currently tops on the team with 18 service aces.

STRETCHING THE COUNTRY

Georgia State is represented by nine states and three countries. From west to east, the states represented are California, Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Alabama, Georgia and Flori-da. Junior Nevena Peeva and Mirjam Pfyl are the only two players not from the United States. Peeva grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria, while Pfyl is from Schindellegi, Schwyz, Switzerland. Freshman Taylor Smith is the lone Panther from the “Peach” state as she attended Blessed Trinity Catholic right her in Atlanta.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN...

The Panthers will rack up on their frequent-flyer miles this year as they will travel over 9,000 miles total. Besides bus trips to Clemson, S.C., Wilmington, N.C., and Troy, Ala., the team will fly to such locations as Fullerton, Calif., Chicago, Ill. and CAA cities Fairfax, Va., Harrisonburg, Va., Richmond, Va., Williamsburg, Va., Towson, Md., and Newark, Del.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM

Four freshmen have joined the Panthers for the 2010 season. Head coach Tami Audia welcomed Emily Averbeck, Loren Byer-ly, Veronica Chandre and Taylor Smith.
