The first clash came in 2003 in Athens with then eighth-ranked Georgia posting a 29-10 vic- tory despite incurring a school record 18 penalties for 129 yards. In the first meeting with the Blue Raiders, the Bulldogs only led 10-3 at the half. Michael Cooper scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and Billy Bennett kicked three field goals to pace the Georgia offense. Back Between The Hedges The Bulldogs passed their first SEC road test last Saturday against No. 24 South Carolina, registering a 41-17 victory over the Gamecocks. It marked the most points the Bulldogs have ever scored in Columbia in the series that dates back to 1894. Also, the 24-point margin of victory was the most in Columbia since 1971. Georgia now has opened the season with two straight games of 40+ points for the first time since 2012. That year, Georgia scored at least 40 points in its first five games before falling to South Carolina in Columbia to drop to 5-1. The 2012 squad would go 12-2 overall, win the SEC Eastern Division and the Capital One Bowl over Nebraska. A Glance At The Blue Raiders Middle Tennessee, which is located in Murfreesboro, Tenn., is a member of Confer- ence USA. They are coached by Rick Stockstill who is in his 13th season. Stockstill’s son, Brent, is the team’s starting quarterback. This is one of seven active sons playing for their father who is their head coach, and the only head coach/starting QB combo in Division I-A. Last year, they went 7-6 including defeating Arkansas State in the Camellia Bowl. MTSU opened the season with a 35-7 loss at Vanderbilt, however it was only 14-7 early in the third quarter before the Commodores exploded for the game’s final 21 points. This past Saturday, MTSU defeated Tennessee-Martin 61-37 at Floyd Stadium in its home opener. UT-Martin managed 460 total yards and recovered an onside kick to pull within 10 with nine and a half minutes left, but MTSU came away with a victory. The Blue Raiders’ 61 points was the most since tallying 77 against Florida Atlantic in 2014. New Look At Tailback Sophomore QB Jake Fromm returns to direct the Bulldog offense. Georgia is re- placing tailbacks Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. They completed their Bulldog career in 2017 as the top tandem in college football history, amassing 8,407 rushing yards and 77 rushing touchdowns. With the duo now playing in the NFL, Georgia is looking to its next wave of talented tailbacks including sophomore D’Andre Swift and juniors Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien. Swift started the first two games and is leading the corps with 20 carries for 107 yards two touchdowns. In the most recent contest at #24 South Carolina, Holyfield had career highs with nine carries for 79 yards and a score. In fact, all three backs scored against the Gameocks and against Austin Peay and Swift finished with 12 carries for 64 yards and Herrien had seven for 45 in the matchup at USC. Bulldog Graduates Georgia has three players on this year’s roster who have already earned their undergraduate degrees. The players who received their undergraduate degrees include: DL Jay Hayes (Notre Dame-Film, Television, Theater), P Landon Stratton (Murray State-Occupational and Health Safety) and OL Sean Fogarty (UGA-History). Hayes is pursuing a Master’s degree in Financial Planning while Stratton is enrolled in the Master’s program for Learning, Leadership and Orga- nizational Development. Fogarty is taking a full load of undergraduate courses. All of the SEC players who have achieved an undergraduate degree will be sporting the SEC Graduate patch on their uniforms. When Georgia looked for a new head coach after the 2015 season, the arrows pointed to Kirby Smart, longtime Alabama defensive coordinator and for-mer UGA player and assistant. The 2017 Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year has not disap-pointed. In his first year leading the Bulldogs in 2016, Georgia ex-tended its school record to 20 consecutive bowl appearances and posted five fourth-quarter comebacks including wins over No. 8 Auburn and No. 22 North Carolina. He led UGA to an 8-5 final record, which included a

victory over TCU in the Liberty Bowl. In 2017, Smart directed UGA to a 13-2 record, an SEC title, a win at The Rose Bowl Game during the CFP semifinal and a spot in the National Champion-ship. He was named the Max-well Football Club’s George Munger National Coach of the Year. Before 2017, the Bull-dogs last SEC title was 2005. He has also made an immedi-ate impact in recruiting, posting the nation’s top-ranked class in 2018 and the third-ranked class in 2017. In addition to coaching, Smart oversees the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, which is fo-cused on being champions in the community by supporting and giving back to needy chil-dren and families. Smart officially came home to Georgia on Dec. 6, 2015. But he still had unfinished business at Alabama, which was chasing a national title. He juggled two jobs for a month until January 11, 2016, when the Tide won its fourth national championship in a seven-year span. Twelve hours later, he was at work in Athens.

Georgia trailed 45-38 with 3:22 remaining in the game before Fromm directed a game-tying drive. * Fromm’s first career start came last year at #24 Notre Dame. dog tracks startersStrong Start To 2018 * Georgia’s defense held #24 South Carolina to just 17 points, had a Red Zone stop and a pick-six in the SEC opener on the road. * The Bulldog defense posted a shutout in the season opener, limiting Austin Peay to 152 total yards (91 rushing, 61 passing) on 50 plays. Previously, Georgia’s last shutout came on Sept. 30, 2017 when it beat Tennessee 41-0 in Knoxville. In the first half, the Governors tallied 81 yards and just four first downs. * The Bulldogs accomplished first half shutouts four times last year, including in the College Football Playoff National Champion-ship Game versus Alabama. Looking For Leaders At LB * After losing three starters at linebacker off the 2017 squad to graduation and the NFL, Georgia has senior Juwan Taylor, sophomore Monty Rice, junior Tae Crowder and senior Natrez Patrick vying for playing time at ILB. * Rice and Taylor got the start in the 2018 season opener and then Patrick and Taylor started at #24 South Carolina. Rice went on to post a career-high eight tackles versus the Gamecocks while Taylor was credited with a touchdown after DB Deandre Baker dropped the ball at the 1 yard line following an INT return. *With the loss of OLBs Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy to the NFL, senior OLB D’Andre Walker is emerging as the leader on the outside. He had four tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack, against the Gamecocks. After playing in 41 games leading up to 2018, Walker started his first game in the 2018 sea-son opener and recovered a fumble. * In addition, sophomore Walter Grant also played in 13 games last year and finished with nine stops, including 2.5 tackles for loss from an OLB spot, and will be looked on to continue his development with the Dogs. Grant also got the starting nod for the first time versus APSU at OLB. Returning Starters Headline Defensive Line Group * The defensive line was effective at #24 South Carolina by limiting the Gamecocks to 54 rushing yards on 20 attempts. * Veterans Tyler Clark and Jonathan Ledbetter anchor a defensive line that lost 2017 senior John Atkins and junior Trenton Thompson. * Clark led the front in the Rose Bowl Game win over #2 Okla-homa with five stops, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Clark was tops among all interior linemen with 41 stops. Ledbet-ter was next on the list with 38 tackles. * Behind Clark, Ledbetter and junior Julian Rochester, Geor-gia is rotating in juniors Michael Barnett, Michail Carter, soph-omore Devonte Wyatt, senior DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle and graduate transfer Jay Hayes. Hayes arrived in Athens during the summer after graduating from Notre Dame. He had seven tackles during the Bulldogs’ win over the Irish in 2017.

Reed, Baker Back To Lead Defensive Backfield * Senior DB Deandre Baker, who has been named a pre-season All-American by several outlets, had six stops, two pass breakups and the team’s first interception in 2018 (along with a 55-yard return) at #24 South Carolina. * Georgia also welcomes back junior J.R. Reed, a 2017 All-SEC Second Team selection. He finished with three tackles against the Gamecocks and had a pick in the end zone to thwart a scoring chance. In the 2018 season opener, Reed was the leading tackler with six stops. * Sophomore Richard LeCounte made his second consecu-tive start at South Carolina and led the team with a career-high 10 tackles and a pass breakup. * One of the veterans also expected to make a difference is junior Tyrique McGhee. McGhee was sidelined with a foot injury in the season opener and played sparingly at South Carolina. * The candidates in the secondary who saw action in the first

two games included: senior Jarvis Wilson, sophomores William Poole, Deangelo Gibbs, Mark Webb, redshirt freshman Eric Stokes, freshman Tyson Campbell. Campbell had four stops versus the Gamecocks.

Blankenship Back * Preseason All-American candidate PK Rodrigo Blanken-ship is 11-for-11 in PATs this year, has drilled all three of his field goal attempts, including a 44 and a 45 yarder versus the Game-cocks. He has also booted all 14 of his kickoffs for touchbacks this year. * Blankenship set a Rose Bowl Game record by drilling a ca-reer-long 55-yard field goal during the 2OT win over #2 Oklahoma. His performance included a 38-yard FG in overtime. * He was a 2017 Groza Award semifi-nalist, going 20-for-23 on field goals and all three misses coming from 40+ yards. * Last year, 67 of his kickoffs were touchbacks, which was a new school record. The old mark was by Kevin Butler (51 in 1981).

* True freshman Jake Camarda started his career versus APSU with three punts for a 55 yard average (fifth best in UGA his-tory), including a long of 63. He averaged 41.3 against South Car-olina, including a 62 yarder. Camarda graduated from Norcross High School and finished his prep career as one of the nation’s top punters last year. SEC’s Leading Punt Returner Back * Junior returner/receiver Mecole Hardman is back in the lineup after having 23 punt returns for 271 yards and an 11.8 aver-age (all of those led the league). Also, Hardman was second in the SEC in kickoff returns with a 25.2 average (20 returns for 505 yards). * RSo. transfer Demetris Robertson had 10 kick returns for 202 yards to total 969 all-purpose yards in his first year at Cal dur-ing the 2016 season. He had career highs of six kick returns and 116 kick return yards as well as a career-long kick return of 39 yards at Oregon State in a contest in which he finished with a career-best 145 all-purpose yards.

Coach Kirby Smart said…

“At the end of the day, they (South Carolina) just wore down ... You could just see the air coming out of them a little bit as they wore down physically. The bigstopofthegametomewaseitherthefirstorseconddriveinthesecondhalf. We had third-and-2 or third-and-3 and stopped them. They had to punt it right back to us. The defense was right back out there. That takes its toll. I think our conditioning showed through. A lot of credit goes to coach (Scott) Sinclair and the strength staff. They worked those kids hard all summer, so they could prepare for second halves like that.

Georgia 45, Austin Peay 0Sept. 1, 2018 • Sanford Stadium - Athens, Ga.

ATHENS, Ga. - A stout defensive effort coupled with an explosive Georgia offense lifted the Bulldogs to a 45-0 victory against the Austin Peay Governors in the season opener at Sanford Stadium on Saturday after-noon in front of a capacity crowd of 92,746 and an ESPN national televised audience. As the Georgia defense held the Governors scoreless in the first half, every offensive possession from the Red and Black resulted in a Georgia score. The first of the 2018-19 season, a Rodrigo Blankenship 34-yard field goal capped a 10-play, 41-yard offensive drive directed by Fromm. Following the first of many stands from the Bulldog defense, the Geor-gia offense conducted an 11-play, 80-yard march, featuring 46 total yards from Swift. Junior Riley Ridley claimed the first touchdown of the season and a 10-0 lead with a 10-yard connection with Fromm. Thirty-nine seconds later, senior outside lienbacker D’Andre Walker placed the ball back into the hands of the Bulldog offense, recovering a fumble from Austin Peay quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall. The next play, Swift ran for an 8-yard touchdown, sending Blankenship to the field to se-cure the extra point and the 17-0 margin. The Bulldog debuts continued into the second quarter: Fields entered the game and placed the ball in the hands of junior wide receiver Demetris Robertson. With a pair of blocks from the tight end tandem of Isaac Nauta and Charlie Woerner, the open field presented itself for the Cal transfer, cementing his first Georgia score on a career-high 72-yard run to set up the 24-0 lead. After a three-and-out from Austin Peay, a 9-play, 69-yard drive was fi-nalized with a handoff to Holyfield, who eluded multiple Governor defend-ers on his way to the end zone with a 17-yard touchdown. Junior Mecole Hardman closed out the half for the Bulldogs, using his speed to out-run the Austin Peay secondary to a 38-0 advantage with the help of a Blankenship extra point. In the second half, a 36-yard run from Cook positioned the Bulldogs in Austin Peay territory, set up for a Fields-Nauta 12-yard touchdown. Blan-kenship sealed the final at 45-0.

Worth Noting… • The shutout marked the first in a season opener since 2003 against Clem-son. Before Austin Peay, the most recent shutout for the Bulldogs came against Tennessee in 2017 (41-0), and the most recent team to be held scoreless for two quarters was Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. • The Bulldog defense held the Governors to 152 total yards and seven first downs on 50 plays. In the first half alone, Georgia limited Austin Peay to 81 yards with one trip to the Red Zone. • Offensive production was spread between 11 receivers from three different quarterbacks: sophomore Jake Fromm and freshmen Justin Fields and Matthew Downing. • D’Andre Swift paced the backfield with eight carries and a career-high four completions. The Philadelphia, Penn. native primarily shared responsibilities with juniors Brian Herrien and Elijah Holyfield and freshman James Cook. • Demetris Robertson’s lone carry brought a 72-yard career high touchdown, the longest run by a Bulldog since Sony Michel went 75 yards in the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma. • Georgia had six first-time starters on offense and defense, including one true freshman, as well as true freshman punter Jake Camarda: redshirt freshman OT Isaiah Wilson, junior WR Tyler Simmons, senior WR (and team captain for Austin Peay) Ahkil Crumpton, senior OLB D’Andre Walker, freshman DB Tyson Campbell and sophmore OLB Walter Grant.

Coach Kirby Smart said…

“We’re happy to get the win. It was a good way to start. The kids played hard. But there are a lot of things we can improve on. We knew we couldn’t get better until we played a game. We’ll learn from this one, learn from our mistakes. We’ll get some things ironed out.”
