INTRODUCTION

T h i s r e p o r t c o n t a i n s t h e r e s u l t s o b t a i n e d f r o m 741 .7 meters of NQ w i r e l i n e diamond d r i l l i n g conducted on t h e Domineer C l a i m Group between September 30,1986 and November 11, 1986 by Globe D r i l l i n g Ltd . o f Vancouver, B r i t i s h Columbia.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The Domineer'Group of Mine ra l C l a i m s is c e n t e r e d on L a t i t u d e 49'46' Nor th , Longi tude 115'18' West w i t h i n map s h e e t s N.T.S. 92F/llW, 92F/14W and t h e Nanaimo Min ing .Div i s ion . The c l a i m s are l o c a t e d a p p r o x i m a t e l y 21.5 Kilometres nor thwes t o f Cour tenay , B r i t i s h C o l u m b i a . They s t r a d d l e t h e summit o f Mt.Washington, t h e McKgy Lake B a s i n , t h e n o r t h s p u r o f M t . Washington, and a p o r t i o n of t h e area t o t h e I lor th . Access t o t h e claims is by a network of w e l l ma in ta ined paved and g r a v e l mining and l o g g i n g roads. Depending on s n o w f a l l and r u n o f f c o n d i t i o n s access t o w i t h i n 1 .0 k i l o m e t r e s ' o f any p o i n t on t h e p r o p e r t y is u s u a l l y p o s s i b l e by f o u r w h e e l d r i v e v e h i c l e between J u l y and November.

TOPOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

M t . Washington is l o c a t e d a l o n g t h e e a s t e r n margin o f t h e no r thwes t t r e n d i n g Vancouver I s l a n d Ranges i n t h e I n s u l a r B e l t . The l a n d s c a p e i s c h a r a c t e r i z e d by moderate t o p r e c i g i t o u s topography cQvered g e n e r a l l y , by a t h i c k mixed c o n i f e r o u s f o r e s t o f hemlock, r e d and ye l low cedar, d o u g l a s f i r and balsam f i r . L o c a l l y t h i s f o r e s t has been e x t e n s i v e l y logged and is c u r r e n t l y cove red by thick i n p e n e t r a b l e second growth. A s u b a l p i n e f o r e s t of heather a n d krumholtz is developed above 1500 metres. P r o p e r t y e l e v a t i o n s r a n g e from 1590 metres t o 670 m e t r e s . Evidence of r e c e n t g l a c i a t i o n is noted by c i r q u e development , g l a c i a l s t r iae and t h i n t o moderate b u t p e r v a s i v e g l a c i a l t i l l development .

HISTORY

S i n c e 1940 t h e Mt.Washington area h a s been t h e f o c u s of sporadic i n t e n s i v e explora t ion a c t i v i t y .

The f o l l o w i n g c h r o n o l o g i c a l summary f r o m K.E. N o r t h c o t e ' s report dated May 1983, covers the t i m e s p a n from discovery of gold m i n e r a l i z a t i o n i n 1940 t o 1982.

"Gold m i n e r a l i z a t i o n w a s discovered i n p l a c e on M t . Washington i n May 1940 by J . M . McKay, a young mining e n g i n e e r and prospector who systematically panned creeks up f r o m t h e O y s t e r River t o f i n d coarse c o l o u r s i n a creek d r a i n i n g i n t o M c K a y Lake. The gold b e a r i n g s t r u c t u r e s w e r e prospected, t r e n c h e d and sampled under t h e d i r e c t i o n of D r . D.F. Kidd i n 1940-41, I n 1944-45 K a r l S p r i n g e r f i n a n c e d a d i t s on t h e copper b e a r i n g veiins n o r t h of the area sampled for g o l d . M t . Washington Copper Co. L t d . w a s formed i n 1956 by Gordon C. Murray and various j o i n t agreements and o p t i o n s w i t h Noranda and Cominco explored t h e property u n t i l 1964. From 1964 t o 1966 M t . Washington under revised agreement w i t h Cominco and a j o i n t Venture w i t h Cumberland Mining Co. mined and m i l l e d 392 ,173tons of 1.16% Cu, 0 .01 oz per t o n An. and 0 .5 oz per t o n Au. Upon e x h a u s t i o n of economic open p i t copper m l n e r a l i z a t i o n t h e m i l l w a s d i s m a n t l e d .

The property w a s o p t i o n e d by Marietta Resources Company L t d . i n 1 9 6 9 , f u r t h e r explored by M t . Washington i n 1970-71 and t h e n o p t i o n e d to Imperial O i l f r o m 1973- t o 1982. During t h i s l a t t e r period ,the e x p l o r a t i o n emphasis appears t o have been directed towards a s e a r c h f o r more e x t e n s i v e copper m i n e r a l i z a t i o n w i t h l i t t l e e x p l o r a t i o n f o r go ld .

I n May81983,Bet ter Resource% L i m i t e d a c q u i r e d v i a Veerman B o t e 1 L i m i t e d , a n o p t i o n on a b l o c k of claims p r e v i o u s l y c o n t r o l l e d by M t . Washington'tCopper Co . L t d . B y 1984, t h i s l a n d p o s i t i o n w a s expanded t 'o 130 u n i t s and a programme t o assess t h e areas p r e c i o u s metal p o t e n t i a l w a s i n i t i a t e d . By t h e s p r i n g of 1986 t h e l a n d p o s i t i o n w a s expanded t o approximately 230 units. Two diamond drills are c u r r e n t l y o p e r a t i n g c o n t i n u o u s l y t o expand and de l inea te known p r e c i o u s m e t a l occu rances p r e v i o u s l y f round by t r e n c h i n g , s o i l geo- chemical s u r v e y s and p r o s p e c t i n g .

D I S C U S S I O N

T h e g e n e r a l geology of t h e M t . Washington area show a t h i c k sequence of Trassic Karmutsen v o l c a n i c s o v e r l a i n by sed imen t s of t h e C r e t a c r o u s Comox fo rma t ion . Both sequences are c u t by i n t r u s i v e feldspar porphyry and d i o r i t e dykes and s i l l s of Ter t ia ry age. T h e f o r m a t i o n s a r e ' i n t u r n p i e r c e d by breccia sys tems o f v a r i o u s compos i t ion , s i z e , and p o s s i b l y o f d i f f e r e n t a g e s .

T h e pu rpose of d r i l l i n g t h e f o u r t e e n NQ w i r e l i n e diamond d r i l l holes w a s t o f u r t h e r e x p l o r e t h e g o l d m i n e r a l i z a t i o n found by geochemical s o i l sampl ing (1983) t r e n c h i n g (1984/1986) and p r e v i o u s diamond d r i l l i n g (1984). The d r i l l i n g i n t e r s e c t e d a s u b h o r i z o n t a l s ed imen ta ry package c u t by c o n t r u s i v e and i n t r u s i v e dykes. D r i l l i n g t o date s u g g e s t tha t t h e m i n e r a l i z e d s t r u c t u r e s are semiconcordent w i t h bedd ing and c r o s s c u t a l l r o c k types i n c l u d i n g m o s t breccia p i p e s . Wi th in t h e a u r i f e r o u s zone t h e p r i n c i p a l s u l p h i d e m i n e r a l s i n order o f abundance are py r i t e , c h a l c o p y r i t e , a r s e n o p y r i t e . cove l l i t e relgar and o rp imen t . The best grade gold m i n e r a l i z a t i o n appears t o be a s s o c i a t e d w i t h q u a r t z v e i n i n g i n a s s o c i a t i o n w i t h py r i t e a n d / o r a r s e n o p y r i t e .

D r i l l i n g t o date has no t p e n e t r a t e d t h e s e d i m e n t a r y sequence .
