Cultural characteristics of Shek Pik prison

Hong Kong prisons are not like prisons like you would see in America, Australia and especially on TV. My reason for saying this is that physical prisoner on prisoner violence is very low in Hong Kong, but more specifically Shek Pik Prison.

Over at this prison, it is relatively calm, which is very unusual for a prison. The bad thing though is that this prison has become overcrowded, and there is nowhere to put all there people who keep coming in. Having said that, they all do work quite a bit, with almost all prisoners having to work in the industrial business.

T h e c r i m i n a l s a r e transported with a special van. Once they have reached the prison of which they belong to (as there are prisons for different types of prisons), they will be given an attire (in most prisons). The usual prisons get put in a rehabilitation centre to continue back to their normal lives. Prisoners are allowed to have visitors from 10 am – 5pm except for pub lic ho li days an d o n Sundays they cannot come in early.

Some of the prisons on Lantau can be many years

older than the recent ones. Shek Pik detention centre as one of the latest centres. Near Shek Pi Prison, there is one of the biggest reservoirs in Lantau and the detention centres (about 15) located around the reservoir and all on flat land. There are not

many forests around there until you past the reservoir.

Near Shek Pik Reservoir, there are rock car vings thought to be dated back to the Bronze age.

Prisons location

by Sam Carter• • •

In Honk Kong lantau prisons, there are certain facilities that a prison must require. Firstly a prison must require a surrounding so that the prisoners can’t escape. It must have high surrounding walls with strong barbed wire on top so that it makes it hard to escape. It should also include a guard watch tower (depending on how bad the pr i so ners are) . Another requirement to a pr ison safety is a cellblock that the guards make sure they are safely locked up and secure. Also a prison must be located in a secure place where it is hard for the prisoners to access the main city or life, if they do escape.

The criminals are transported with a special van. Once they have reached the prison of which they belong to (as there a prisons for the different types of prisoners), they will be given and attire/uniform (in most prisons, unless their relatives decide to send them/bring them c lot h e s o f t h e i r o w n . Depending on the crimes the prisoners have committed, they get put in different prisons, rehabilitation centres and detention centres. The rehabilitation centres usually help the criminals to continue

and to learn how to live a normal life (for example, p e o p le w ho have been addicted to drugs). Prisoners from shekpik prison (etc) are allowed to have visitors from 10am-5pm exception public holidays & Sundays are a little later.

Shekpik prison is a very recently populated prison and there is a big fresh water reser vo ir by it. Shekpik reservoir is the 4th biggest fresh water lake in Hong Kong. It was made in 1963. Around this reservoir, there is a couple of popular caves & rock carvings thought to be back from the bronze age was fond. There are not many forests around the prisons as the prisons are surrounded with flat concrete land/pavements.

Absolute Location On Lantau Prisons

ABSOLUTE LOCATIONBy Angus Prosser

Absolute location is the exact location of a place. You can find it using coordinates on a map, such as lines of latitude and longitude. Addresses are another form of absolute location. Absolute location is useful because reading a map with coordinates makes it easier to understand where to look. Pilots use absolute location in their daily work.

The Main Prison in Shek Pik (Shek Pik Prison) has an unusual location for a prison as it is located right by the sea and mountains. Also right by the prison, there is a reservoir which could be a potential safety hazard for the prisoners if the reservoir were to collapse and spill over the prison. This location h a s n i c e s c e n e r y a n d f a c i l i t i e s , w h i c h h e l p encourage the prisoners to regain a normal an healthy life style (like the institutions goal). They are encouraged to engage in a goal for their future and aim towards it with everything they do.

! When my team and I phoned up the prison with our survey questions, we were rejected, as they were not allowed to give out

personal information. Instead, they gave us the link to their website (www.csd.gov.hk) and this website included enough information to summarize.

NULLAM PRETIUM: ALIQUAM SED IPSUM EROS?The prison staff put together a 10km Distance run for the prisoners as a fun activity and they were allowed to have their family members join them. Other detention/correctional centers have different kinds of prisoners and the one where only young males and allowed there is what I will talk about now. This correctional Center are for young men who have done things like selling pirated VCD’s and done drugs, etc. These young men go through a correctional course, sort of like a boarding school and carry on a normal life style. They have more pressure on their backs because if they do not pass the final exam, they will have even more problems getting a job and pursuing their future goal.

The bike trail that goes from Tai O to Tung Chung/ Tung Chung to Tao O, goes right by Shek Pik Pison. This is a good thing for tourists so that they can get a wider understanding of what a prison is like, and they actually get to see it in life rather than pictures. This bike trail is soon going to be made, as it will have some affect on the prison for having more tourists overlooking it. It will be a good man made feature for children to get educated in Shek Pik Prison and they will understand how a prison works and what sort of features a prison has, such as, Security, facilities, Areas and what’s around the prison that makes it a good place to plot a prison. This prison is not only useful for getting educated for prisons but it is also used for exercise and Eco Tourism for Tai O, and exercise for people of all ages.

The bicycle tracks from Tung Chung to tai o, passing the prison, are very good exercise for the locals as it gives them a good lifestyle. The scenery and characteristics of what they bike by is very beautiful and gives them a break from the bustling city oh Hong Kong life. The air from the sea and caving mountains make the long bike ride even more enjoyable. Many benefits of biking could be to improve your stamina, cardio workout and getting your muscles moving. The bike ride will be an enjoyable event for many people.

Future Development

Tourism is a good thing for Tai O. There are a few reasons why I believe this is true. First, most of the tourists appreciate things that are there more then the locals. For instance, tourists think the landmarks are more interesting then a

person who has lived in the place their whole life. Also the money it creates, which is good so Tai O can further develop as a community.

The bike trail will from Tung Chung will be good for the local Tai O people, as it will

create revenue for companies, as when they get there, they will probably be hungry and thirsty and all that stuff.
