System designThe design of the fire detectionand alarm system should be to BS 5839:Part 1:1988 Code ofPractice for system designinstallation and servicing.Supplemented with customerrequirements.

Mains Supply Connection

The mains supply to the controlpanel should be via a fused spurunit rated: 5A for 1 & 2 Zone panel7A for 4 & 8 Zone panel

Standby Supply

With the recommended batterythe control panel will provide astandby supply under mainsfailure conditions, for a period of72 hours followed by 30 minutesof alarm load, see specification.

24V supply

The power supply terminals ‘24+and 0’ may drive external ancillaryequipment and is designed to beused in conjunction with auxiliarycontacts and common fire andfault outputs, see control panelspecification.

NOTE: The use of the 24Vsupply will affect the panelstandby capability.

Fire Detection (Zone Circuits)See parts list for compatible parts.

Each zone circuit can have up to2mA load. An end-of-linecapacitor unit is required for zonecircuit monitoring, which must befitted after the last detector ormanual call point on the circuit.All manual call points usedmust have a 470 ohms seriesresistor.

NOTE: If a Beam detector isused, then it must be poweredfrom an independent supply.

Where a zone circuit is not beingused, the end-of-line capacitorunit must be fitted across itsterminals in the panel.

Alarm (Sounder circuits)

NOTE: All sounder circuits(sectors) will always operatetogether in the event of a firecondition.

See parts list for compatible parts.

To comply with the requirementsof BS 5839: Part 1:1988, aminimum of two alarm soundercircuits should be used on allinstallations.

The load must be shared betweenthe sounder circuits.

The alarm sounder circuits areregularly pulse monitored forfailure. It is important that the lastalarm sounder is fitted with a 22KOhm end-of-line resistor.

Where a sounder circuit is notbeing used, the end-of-lineresistor must be fitted across itsterminals in the control panel.

Auxiliary ContactsThese are normally open (NO)and normally closed (NC)contacts that switch over whenthe panel goes into a fire condition.

The contacts are rated at 24V d.c.1A for a resistive load and shouldnot be used to switch voltages inexcess of 50V.

The auxiliary circuits should bepowered from an independentpower supply.

Class ChangeA pair of unmonitored terminalsallow only the system alarmsounders to be actuated from aremote position. It is consideredthat the major use for these will befor class change functions inschools and colleges.

NOTE: There is no indicationat the panel of class changepush button operation.

Common Fire and faultThe common fault output is anormally closed electronic switch,which opens with a fault condition,this is for a fail safe operation.

The common fire output isnormally open electronic switchthat closes with a fire condition.

NOTE: Each electronic switchhas an in-line 1K ohms resistor.

The +24V & 0V is a power supplyfor use with auxiliary contacts,common fire and common faultcircuits, see specification.

Repeat PanelThere can be up to 6 repeatpanels series connected from thecontrol panel. A repeat panelduplicates fire and faultindications together with systemcontrols.

CablesFor the wiring of:

The guidance of BS5839 : Part 1: 1988 should befollowed.

The use of cables, such as (MICCor Belden) are recommended.

Generally available electricalinstallation cable may be used,providing the cable is:

to BS6387

with no more than 2 - cores

each core having no less than1.5mm2 cross section area

with an inherent or through metal conduit screen for earthcontinuity in order to produceelectrical protection and screening

having protection from heat andmechanical damage

Power supply cord

This should be a 3-core cordhaving a rated current of:

5A with a nominal core cross sectional area of 0.75mm2 provided the length of the corddoes not exceed 2m.

Notes to the installerChecks

The power-up and commissioning is done by theservicing organisation.

The wires between the termination point and terminalsshould be short and straightas possible.

The cables of the fire detectionand alarm system and othersystems should usually beseparated by at least 160mm,unless dedicated conduit orducting is used.

Do not use any part of buildingstructure for earthing.

The cable length between theRepeat LED unit and respectivefire detector where used ,should not exceed 10m

Cable Glands should be usedon the equipment for the mainssupply cable.

Unused knockouts on productenclosure that have been removed, should not be leftopen.

Requirements

It is recommended that theinstaller follow the generalrequirements of:

• BS5839:Part 1:1988, which isthe code of practice relating tothe fire detection and alarmsystems for buildings.

• the relevant parts of the BS7671 Requirements forElectrical Installation Institute ofElectrical Engineers WiringRegulations 16th edition.

Second fix installation

To prevent the possibility ofdamage or dirt degrading theperformance or appearance of theSystem products:

the installation of second fix itemsshould be delayed until all majorbuilding work in the area iscomplete.

Fixtures and fittings

It is the installers responsibility toprovide:

• adequate fixtures and fittingsfor the type of constructionsurface onto which a productis to be installed.

• as an aid to this decision, theweight and overall size ofeach full assembly togetherwith implications on cableentries and routing should betaken into consideration.

NOTE: All these proceduresassume that the cable, gland,steel box (BESA box) andother related accessories areprovided by the installer.

As fitted wiring drawings

The installer should acquire:

• site specific information fromthe interested parties, fordetails on the location ofproducts for installation

• the acquired informationtogether with this guide andthe relevant standards shouldbe used to assist the work.

Earth continuity

To maintain earth continuity, thecable screen must be continuedthrough each system device,whether the earth is connected toa device or not.

Panel fixinga) Remove panel from its

packing, but retain the cartonfor storage of spare parts andloose items.

b) Remove the top and bottominner plates, see Figure 10.

c) Check the spares partssupplied with those listed inTable 1. If replacement partsare required at any time, onlyspares that are of the samespecification should be used.

d) Remove the transformer andearth connections from theelectronic assembly, and thenremove the electronicassembly from the panel, see Figure 11. Store the electronicassembly in a safe place untilrequired.

e) Remove the appropriateknock-in on the panel case forcable entry.

f) Hold the panel on the wall inthe desired mounting positionand mark the positions of thefixing holes. See Figure 11 forcase fixing details.

g) Secure the panel to the wallusing suitable fixing such thatadequate support is providedto the control panel assembly.A top centre keyhole fixing isprovided on the case to allowthe panel to be hooked whilstthe bottom two fixing pointsare located.

h) Connect the mains supplycable to the panel.The cable:

• must be through one of thededicated cable entry into thepanel

• via an unswitched fusedspur unit, rated 5A for the1&2 Zone Control and Repeatpanels and 7A for 4&8 Zonepanels.

The fused spur isolator covershould be red and marked:FIRE ALARM - DO NOT SWITCHOFF

The fused spur units must befed from a dedicated switch orprotective device at the localmains supply distributionboard.

i) Wire the system. With theexception of mains cable, allother cables should remainunconnected at the panel.

For the unconnected cableleave 300mm tail wire lengthand mark each core identifyingits final point of connection.

The system wiring can betested whilst not connected tothe respective terminals ateach system equipment.

CAUTION: DO NOTundertake high voltageinsulation tests WITH THECABLES CONNECTED totheir terminals. Such a testmay damage the electroniccircuitry in the systemequipment.

j) Refit the electronic assemblyinto the panel and connect thetransformer and earth cablespreviously removed, see Figure 11.

NOTE: Each terminal in apanel will accept a maximumconductor size of 2.5mmsquare.

NOTE: The installation of alloutstanding parts are usuallycarried out duringCommissioning of the System.

Store all spare parts and loosecomponents including thebatteries inside the panelcarton and keep in a safeplace until required.

CommissioningThe total system should be testedin accordance with thecommissioning requirements ofBS5839:Part 1:1988 or otherstandard specified by the systempurchaser.

NOTE: The commissioningprocedures assume that thesystem has been installed asper instructions in this booklet.

System checksAcquire as fitted drawings

check the system has been in-stalled to the project require-ments.

if appropriate, action the in-staller to carry out changes tothe system.

Initial power upa) Disconnect cables to terminals

of zone, sounder, classchange, auxiliary, common fireand fault circuits. Ensure eachcable is marked forreconnection to respectiveterminals later.

b) Connect end-of-line units tozones and sounder circuits forinitial power up.

c) Check mains connection andswitch on the mains power tothe control panel.

d) Now connect the batterysupply, see Figure 13.

e) Check the panel provides anormal healthy indication, withthe green light lit.

Zone circuit testsa) Transfer the end-of-line

capacitor unit to the last device(detector or manual call point)on a zone circuit.

b) Connect the zone cable to thezone circuit terminals.

c) Carry out zone open circuitand short circuit tests andcheck appropriate indicationsare given.

d) Repeat the above for otherzone circuits.

Sounder circuit testsa) Transfer the end-of-line

resistor unit to the last deviceon a sounder circuit.

b) Connect the sounder circuitcable to the sounder circuitterminals.

c) Carry out sounder open andshort circuit tests and checkappropriate indications aregiven.

d) Repeat the above for othersounder circuits.

Installed system testsThe fire detection and alarmsystem should be tested to ensureit operates to meet the standardsand project requirements.

Configuration

The control and repeat panels arefactory set to the requirements of EN54 Parts 2 and 4.

The operation of the control andrepeat panels and the systemmay be re-configured to sitespecific needs, see system testfunctions and Panel configurationfunctions.

CAUTION: Any specialconfigurations may cause thesystem and equipment tooperate outside therequirements of Europeanstandards.

Test mode A or B operationTo facilitate tests on the firedetection and alarm system thecontrol panel can be set tooperate in a test mode, seeSystem test functions.

With Test mode A or B active: atriggered manual call point or firedetector in the test zone will give:

NOTE: A detector that is stillfull of smoke or heat willretrigger into a fire conditionuntil the smoke or heat in thearea is cleared.

Repeat panel configuration

There can be up to 6 repeatpanels connected in series to thethe control panel.

Each repeat panel connected tothe system is required to be givenan address at both the controland repeat panels, see Panelconfiguration section.

Sound level test

Sound level tests should beconducted to standardrequirements and to customersatisfaction.

Other equipment tests

Where external equipment isconnected to the control panelusing auxiliary, common fire andfault terminals, then these mustbe tested to project requirements.

Zone designation labela) Write on to the zone

designation label the namethat identifies the areaprotected by each zone circuit.

b) Fix the label over the zonedesignation part of the lowerinner plate, see figure 13.

Log book

Fill in system details on the firstthree pages of the log book.

On completion

Ensure the persons responsiblefor the system are made aware of

• system operation

• access codes to controls

• basic controls

• their responsibility

• and the need to log systemevents in the log book.

Test A Test B

Access levels 2 and 3The control and repeat panelsprovides system security bycoded password entry to controls.

There are three coded accesslevels to user controls, also see Table 3.

Access level 1 (AL1) is for authorised user.

Access level 2 (AL2) is for site security.

Access level 3 (AL3) is for site engineer.

Access codesThe factory set codes for:

AL1 - No code required

AL2 - is 123 (default)

AL3 - is 321 (default)

The AL2 and AL3 are 3-digitcodes.

NOTE: The standard AL2 andAL3 access codes are factoryset. These codes may bechanged to user defined codes.

System test functionsTo ease the testing of the systemit is necessary to gain access tosome of these functions.

Access code

AL2 Code : 123 may be usedto gain access to the testfunctions. Depending on how thesystem is configured it may benecessary to use AL3 code321instead of AL2 code.

The factory set AL2 and AL3codes are 123 and 321respectively on first power-up. Ifthe codes are changed at anytime then the power-up codes arenot applicable.

NOTE: It is important to leavethe system in a normaloperating condition oncompletion of commissioning.

User ResponsibilityIt is recommended that thepersons responsible for the firealarm system, should becomefamiliar with the procedures onhow to operate the controls andinterpret indications given at thecontrol and repeat panels.Adequate training should alsohave been given from appointedpersonnel.

DailyThe British Standard code ofpractice for Fire detection andalarm systems for buildings, BS 5839:Part1:1988, states thatthe system should be inspecteddaily to ensure that a normalindication is given at the controland indicating equipment and thatany previously indicated faultcondition has receivedappropriate attention.

a) It recommends entry into theLog Book provided of all thesystem events for futurereference.

b) The person inspecting theprotected premises can ensurethat the use of the area(s)inspected has not changedsuch that the detection andalarm devices have becomeinappropriate.

c) The area(s) can be inspectedto check that no unsafepractices that could lead to fireare being undertaken.

WeeklyAt Weekly intervals a differentFire detector or Manual CallPoint of the system should betested to ensure the system iscapable of operating under alarmcondition.

a) The operation of the alarmsounders should be checked,which also provides a regularreminder to those occupyingthe premises that there is a firealarm system with a particularcharacteristic sound.

b) The test should be performedat a regular time to avoidconfusion between a test anda genuine fire alarm.

QuarterlyAt quarterly intervals the systemshould be inspected and any worknecessary should be performedby trained maintenance engineer.

Battery Replacement

NOTE: Any servicing work onthe System must be carriedout by servicing organisation.

Under normal operatingconditions the maintenance freelead acid batteries in the Controland Repeat panels can have auseful life of up to 5 years fromthe date of manufacture.

NOTE: It is recommended thatthese batteries are replaced at4 Yearly intervals from thedate the System is firstcommissioned.

Testing a Manual Call PointPush the test key through the holein the underside of the call point toengage the test cam mechanismand push to operate the cammechanism.

At this point the test key isretained in the call point andpulling it out will reset the glass.

NOTE: The alarm sounders inthe system will be activated bythis test. To silence alarmsand reset the system, seeoperating instructions.

Replacing a broken Glass

WARNING: Takeappropriate precautionswhen clearing broken glassto prevent injury.

NOTE: A weather resistantversion of manual call pointswill have two gaskets, aCover/glass gasket and aSpacer/cover gasket, whichmust be installed in theirrespective position.

These procedures assume thecover on the manual call point isopen and any broken glass hasbeen cleared.

a) Feed the glass upward to pushthe cams down and fit underslider, locate bottom of glassinto recess.

b) Hold the bottom of glass inposition and rotate thethumbwheel quadrant to raisethe top of the glass.

c) Fit the call point cover byhooking it into the top of theunit and making sure that theglass is properly seated (helddown) tighten the cover fixingscrew.

Fault indications

All fault repairs should becarried out by the servicingorganisation.

In a fault condition:

• the common Fault lightis lit

• appropriate fault light isalso lit

• internal Fault Buzzer soundsintermittent tone

• Multiple faults aresimultaneously annunciatedwhen this does not causeconfusion.

NOTE: Normally the fault lightswill be automaticallyextinguished once the faultcondition is rectified.

NOTE: If the system detects afire during a fault condition thefault indicators may beextinguished.

How to silence the faultbuzzer

Press the 3 digit code

if required and

then press Cancel Buzzer .

Notice the buzzer is silencedbut visual indications remainactive.

NOTE: The sounder circuitsare pulse monitored for failure.The monitoring signal is onlyapplied to the circuits for ashort duration at regularintervals.

Faults Cause

What is a Zonefault?

A zone fault occurs when a zone circuit cable is opencircuit or short circuit, or the end-of-line capacitor unithas been disconnected or a detector has beenremoved.

What is aSounder fault?

A sounder fault occurs when a sounder circuit cableis open circuit or short circuit, or the end-of-lineresistor unit has been disconnected.

What is a Mainspower fault?

A mains failure occurs when the mains power supplyto the panel is removed. This can occur on mainsfuse failure or mains supply disconnection.

What is a Batterypower fault?

A battery supply failure occurs when the batterysupply to the panel has failed (due to aging process)or is disconnected or the battery fuse has failed.

What is an Earthfault?

An earth fault occurs when there is an electrical pathfor current flow from the system to earth connections.

What is a Repeatpanel link fault?

A repeat panel link fault occurs when there is acommunication failure between the control andrepeat panels.

What is a SystemFault?

A system fault occurs in the event themicroprocessor failure.

Operating instructions

Normal indicationsUnder normal condition the panelshould give a healthy indication,

with only the green Powerlight lit.

The control panel provides systemsecurity by password entry tocontrols.

Fire ConditionIn the event of an automatic firedetection the indications given are:

FIRE light is lit.

Zones-fire light is lit.

buzzer sounds continuous tone.

system alarm sounders are activated

if applicable, auxiliary equip-ment is actuated

if applicable, automatic link tothe Fire Brigade is initiated.

After the emergency is overAfter emergency is over silencethe alarms and reset the system:

a) Enter the 3 digit code

to gain access tothe controls.

b) Press the Silence Alarms

button.

Notice the system alarmsounders are silenced andlocal buzzer soundsintermittent tone.

System designThe design of the fire detectionand alarm system should be to BS 5839:Part 1:1988 Code ofPractice for system designinstallation and servicing.Supplemented with customerrequirements.

Mains Supply Connection

The mains supply to the controlpanel should be via a fused spurunit rated: 5A for 1 & 2 Zone panel7A for 4 & 8 Zone panel

Standby Supply

With the recommended batterythe control panel will provide astandby supply under mainsfailure conditions, for a period of72 hours followed by 30 minutesof alarm load, see specification.

24V supply

The power supply terminals ‘24+and 0’ may drive external ancillaryequipment and is designed to beused in conjunction with auxiliarycontacts and common fire andfault outputs, see control panelspecification.

NOTE: The use of the 24Vsupply will affect the panelstandby capability.

Fire Detection (Zone Circuits)See parts list for compatible parts.

Each zone circuit can have up to2mA load. An end-of-linecapacitor unit is required for zonecircuit monitoring, which must befitted after the last detector ormanual call point on the circuit.All manual call points usedmust have a 470 ohms seriesresistor.

NOTE: If a Beam detector isused, then it must be poweredfrom an independent supply.

Where a zone circuit is not beingused, the end-of-line capacitorunit must be fitted across itsterminals in the panel.

Alarm (Sounder circuits)

NOTE: All sounder circuits(sectors) will always operatetogether in the event of a firecondition.

See parts list for compatible parts.

To comply with the requirementsof BS 5839: Part 1:1988, aminimum of two alarm soundercircuits should be used on allinstallations.

The load must be shared betweenthe sounder circuits.

The alarm sounder circuits areregularly pulse monitored forfailure. It is important that the lastalarm sounder is fitted with a 22KOhm end-of-line resistor.

Auxiliary ContactsThese are normally open (NO)and normally closed (NC)contacts that switch over whenthe panel goes into a fire condition.

The contacts are rated at 24V d.c.1A for a resistive load and shouldnot be used to switch voltages inexcess of 50V.

The auxiliary circuits should bepowered from an independentpower supply.

Class ChangeA pair of unmonitored terminalsallow only the system alarmsounders to be actuated from aremote position. It is consideredthat the major use for these will befor class change functions inschools and colleges.

NOTE: There is no indicationat the panel of class changepush button operation.

Common Fire and faultThe common fault output is anormally closed electronic switch,which opens with a fault condition,this is for a fail safe operation.

The common fire output isnormally open electronic switchthat closes with a fire condition.

NOTE: Each electronic switchhas an in-line 1K ohms resistor.

The +24V & 0V is a power supplyfor use with auxiliary contacts,common fire and common faultcircuits, see specification.

Repeat PanelThere can be up to 6 repeatpanels series connected from thecontrol panel. A repeat panelduplicates fire and faultindications together with systemcontrols.

CablesFor the wiring of:

The guidance of BS5839 : Part 1: 1988 should befollowed.

The use of cables, such as (MICCor Belden) are recommended.

Generally available electricalinstallation cable may be used,providing the cable is:

to BS6387

with no more than 2 - cores

each core having no less than1.5mm2 cross section area

with an inherent or through metal conduit screen for earthcontinuity in order to produceelectrical protection and screening

having protection from heat andmechanical damage

Power supply cord

This should be a 3-core cordhaving a rated current of:

5A with a nominal core cross sectional area of 0.75mm2 provided the length of the corddoes not exceed 2m.

Notes to the installerChecks

The power-up and commissioning is done by theservicing organisation.

The wires between the termination point and terminalsshould be short and straightas possible.

The cables of the fire detectionand alarm system and othersystems should usually beseparated by at least 160mm,unless dedicated conduit orducting is used.

Do not use any part of buildingstructure for earthing.

The cable length between theRepeat LED unit and respectivefire detector where used ,should not exceed 10m

Cable Glands should be usedon the equipment for the mainssupply cable.

Unused knockouts on productenclosure that have been removed, should not be leftopen.

Requirements

It is recommended that theinstaller follow the generalrequirements of:

• BS5839:Part 1:1988, which isthe code of practice relating tothe fire detection and alarmsystems for buildings.

• the relevant parts of the BS7671 Requirements forElectrical Installation Institute ofElectrical Engineers WiringRegulations 16th edition.

Second fix installation

To prevent the possibility ofdamage or dirt degrading theperformance or appearance of theSystem products:

the installation of second fix itemsshould be delayed until all majorbuilding work in the area iscomplete.

Fixtures and fittings

It is the installers responsibility toprovide:

• adequate fixtures and fittingsfor the type of constructionsurface onto which a productis to be installed.

• as an aid to this decision, theweight and overall size ofeach full assembly togetherwith implications on cableentries and routing should betaken into consideration.

NOTE: All these proceduresassume that the cable, gland,steel box (BESA box) andother related accessories areprovided by the installer.

As fitted wiring drawings

The installer should acquire:

• site specific information fromthe interested parties, fordetails on the location ofproducts for installation

• the acquired informationtogether with this guide andthe relevant standards shouldbe used to assist the work.

Earth continuity

To maintain earth continuity, thecable screen must be continuedthrough each system device,whether the earth is connected toa device or not.

Panel fixinga) Remove panel from its

packing, but retain the cartonfor storage of spare parts andloose items.

b) Remove the top and bottominner plates, see Figure 10.

c) Check the spares partssupplied with those listed inTable 1. If replacement partsare required at any time, onlyspares that are of the samespecification should be used.

d) Remove the transformer andearth connections from theelectronic assembly, and thenremove the electronicassembly from the panel, see Figure 11. Store the electronicassembly in a safe place untilrequired.

e) Remove the appropriateknock-in on the panel case forcable entry.

f) Hold the panel on the wall inthe desired mounting positionand mark the positions of thefixing holes. See Figure 11 forcase fixing details.

g) Secure the panel to the wallusing suitable fixing such thatadequate support is providedto the control panel assembly.A top centre keyhole fixing isprovided on the case to allowthe panel to be hooked whilstthe bottom two fixing pointsare located.

h) Connect the mains supplycable to the panel.The cable:

• must be through one of thededicated cable entry into thepanel

• via an unswitched fusedspur unit, rated 5A for the1&2 Zone Control and Repeatpanels and 7A for 4&8 Zonepanels.

The fused spur isolator covershould be red and marked:FIRE ALARM - DO NOT SWITCHOFF

The fused spur units must befed from a dedicated switch orprotective device at the localmains supply distributionboard.

i) Wire the system. With theexception of mains cable, allother cables should remainunconnected at the panel.

For the unconnected cableleave 300mm tail wire lengthand mark each core identifyingits final point of connection.

The system wiring can betested whilst not connected tothe respective terminals ateach system equipment.

CAUTION: DO NOTundertake high voltageinsulation tests WITH THECABLES CONNECTED totheir terminals. Such a testmay damage the electroniccircuitry in the systemequipment.

j) Refit the electronic assemblyinto the panel and connect thetransformer and earth cablespreviously removed, see Figure 11.

NOTE: Each terminal in apanel will accept a maximumconductor size of 2.5mmsquare.

NOTE: The installation of alloutstanding parts are usuallycarried out duringCommissioning of the System.

Store all spare parts and loosecomponents including thebatteries inside the panelcarton and keep in a safeplace until required.

CommissioningThe total system should be testedin accordance with thecommissioning requirements ofBS5839:Part 1:1988 or otherstandard specified by the systempurchaser.

NOTE: The commissioningprocedures assume that thesystem has been installed asper instructions in this booklet.

System checksAcquire as fitted drawings

check the system has been in-stalled to the project require-ments.

if appropriate, action the in-staller to carry out changes tothe system.

Initial power upa) Disconnect cables to terminals

of zone, sounder, classchange, auxiliary, common fireand fault circuits. Ensure eachcable is marked forreconnection to respectiveterminals later.

b) Connect end-of-line units tozones and sounder circuits forinitial power up.

c) Check mains connection andswitch on the mains power tothe control panel.

d) Now connect the batterysupply, see Figure 13.

e) Check the panel provides anormal healthy indication, withthe green light lit.

Zone circuit testsa) Transfer the end-of-line

capacitor unit to the last device(detector or manual call point)on a zone circuit.

b) Connect the zone cable to thezone circuit terminals.

c) Carry out zone open circuitand short circuit tests andcheck appropriate indicationsare given.

d) Repeat the above for otherzone circuits.

Sounder circuit testsa) Transfer the end-of-line

resistor unit to the last deviceon a sounder circuit.

b) Connect the sounder circuitcable to the sounder circuitterminals.

c) Carry out sounder open andshort circuit tests and checkappropriate indications aregiven.

d) Repeat the above for othersounder circuits.

Installed system testsThe fire detection and alarmsystem should be tested to ensureit operates to meet the standardsand project requirements.

Configuration

The control and repeat panels arefactory set to the requirements of EN54 Parts 2 and 4.

The operation of the control andrepeat panels and the systemmay be re-configured to sitespecific needs, see system testfunctions and Panel configurationfunctions.

CAUTION: Any specialconfigurations may cause thesystem and equipment tooperate outside therequirements of Europeanstandards.

Test mode A or B operationTo facilitate tests on the firedetection and alarm system thecontrol panel can be set tooperate in a test mode, seeSystem test functions.

With Test mode A or B active: atriggered manual call point or firedetector in the test zone will give:

NOTE: A detector that is stillfull of smoke or heat willretrigger into a fire conditionuntil the smoke or heat in thearea is cleared.

Repeat panel configuration

There can be up to 6 repeatpanels connected in series to thethe control panel.

Each repeat panel connected tothe system is required to be givenan address at both the controland repeat panels, see Panelconfiguration section.

Sound level test

Sound level tests should beconducted to standardrequirements and to customersatisfaction.

Other equipment tests

Where external equipment isconnected to the control panelusing auxiliary, common fire andfault terminals, then these mustbe tested to project requirements.

User ResponsibilityIt is recommended that thepersons responsible for the firealarm system, should becomefamiliar with the procedures onhow to operate the controls andinterpret indications given at thecontrol and repeat panels.Adequate training should alsohave been given from appointedpersonnel.

DailyThe British Standard code ofpractice for Fire detection andalarm systems for buildings, BS 5839:Part1:1988, states thatthe system should be inspecteddaily to ensure that a normalindication is given at the controland indicating equipment and thatany previously indicated faultcondition has receivedappropriate attention.

a) It recommends entry into theLog Book provided of all thesystem events for futurereference.

b) The person inspecting theprotected premises can ensurethat the use of the area(s)inspected has not changedsuch that the detection andalarm devices have becomeinappropriate.

c) The area(s) can be inspectedto check that no unsafepractices that could lead to fireare being undertaken.

WeeklyAt Weekly intervals a differentFire detector or Manual CallPoint of the system should betested to ensure the system iscapable of operating under alarmcondition.

Battery Replacement

NOTE: Any servicing work onthe System must be carriedout by servicing organisation.

Under normal operatingconditions the maintenance freelead acid batteries in the Controland Repeat panels can have auseful life of up to 5 years fromthe date of manufacture.

NOTE: It is recommended thatthese batteries are replaced at4 Yearly intervals from thedate the System is firstcommissioned.

Testing a Manual Call PointPush the test key through the holein the underside of the call point toengage the test cam mechanismand push to operate the cammechanism.

At this point the test key isretained in the call point andpulling it out will reset the glass.

NOTE: The alarm sounders inthe system will be activated bythis test. To silence alarmsand reset the system, seeoperating instructions.

Replacing a broken Glass

WARNING: Takeappropriate precautionswhen clearing broken glassto prevent injury.

NOTE: A weather resistantversion of manual call pointswill have two gaskets, aCover/glass gasket and aSpacer/cover gasket, whichmust be installed in theirrespective position.

These procedures assume thecover on the manual call point isopen and any broken glass hasbeen cleared.

a) Feed the glass upward to pushthe cams down and fit underslider, locate bottom of glassinto recess.

b) Hold the bottom of glass inposition and rotate thethumbwheel quadrant to raisethe top of the glass.

c) Fit the call point cover byhooking it into the top of theunit and making sure that theglass is properly seated (helddown) tighten the cover fixingscrew.

Fault indications

All fault repairs should becarried out by the servicingorganisation.

In a fault condition:

• the common Fault lightis lit

• appropriate fault light isalso lit

• internal Fault Buzzer soundsintermittent tone

• Multiple faults aresimultaneously annunciatedwhen this does not causeconfusion.

NOTE: Normally the fault lightswill be automaticallyextinguished once the faultcondition is rectified.

NOTE: If the system detects afire during a fault condition thefault indicators may beextinguished.

What is a Zonefault?

A zone fault occurs when a zone circuit cable is opencircuit or short circuit, or the end-of-line capacitor unithas been disconnected or a detector has beenremoved.

What is aSounder fault?

A sounder fault occurs when a sounder circuit cableis open circuit or short circuit, or the end-of-lineresistor unit has been disconnected.

What is a Mainspower fault?

A mains failure occurs when the mains power supplyto the panel is removed. This can occur on mainsfuse failure or mains supply disconnection.

What is a Batterypower fault?

A battery supply failure occurs when the batterysupply to the panel has failed (due to aging process)or is disconnected or the battery fuse has failed.

What is an Earthfault?

An earth fault occurs when there is an electrical pathfor current flow from the system to earth connections.

What is a Repeatpanel link fault?

A repeat panel link fault occurs when there is acommunication failure between the control andrepeat panels.

What is a SystemFault?

A system fault occurs in the event themicroprocessor failure.

GENT 1,2,4 and 8 Zone Model 3260 Fire Alarm Control Panel

1 IntroductionThe fire alarm control panel has beendesigned to comply with the requirementsof BS 5839:Part 4:1988 for use insystems complying with the requirementsof BS 5839:Part 1:1988 which are theBritish Standards for fire detection andalarm systems in buildings. Theseinstructions should provide sufficientinformation to install the product and thencheck the performance of the installedsystem. It is however important that thoseresponsible for the design, installation andcommissioning of the system should havea good working knowledge of therequirements of installed systems,particularly BS 5839:Part 1:1988 Code ofPractice for system design installationand servicing.

2 Fire Detection and AlarmSystem DesignThe following design information isintended to provide guidance on aspectsof system design, specifically related tothe use of the control panel. Beforedesigning any fire alarm system, referenceshould be made to the BS 5839 Part1:1988 which is the Code normallyapplicable in the U.K., but this may besupplemented by additional requirementsto suit individual user needs.

2.1 Mains Supply ConnectionThe mains supply to the Control Panelshould be a 230Vac +10% -6% 50Hzsingle phase. Its connection to the panelshould be made via a 3A (5A for 8 ZonePanel) fused spur unit reserved solely tofeed the Control Panel.

2.2 Standby SupplyThe Control Panel will provide a standbysupply, under mains failure conditions,for a period of 72 hours followed by 30minutes of full alarm load, with anaverage detector load of 1mA per zoneand a total sounder load of 1A.

2.3 Fire Detection Circuits(Zone Circuits)The control panel include fire detectioncircuits, also referred to as zone circuits,for the connection of fire detectors andmanual call points. It is important toensure that the detectors and call pointsused are compatible with the controlpanel. Only the recommended devicesshould be used. It is important that allcall points are fitted with a 470 ohmsseries resistor. Failure to follow thisrecommendation may lead to inferiorperformance of the system.

Note: The maximum line loopresistance of a fire detection circuitshould not exceed 100 Ohms.

The recommended devices for firedetection circuit are:

• GENT 7630 Ionisation smoke detector

• GENT 7640 Optical smoke detector

• GENT 7650 Fixed temperature heatdetector

• GENT 7660 Rate of rise heat detector

• GENT 7670 High temperature heatdetector

• GENT 7610 Duct detector 24Vd.c.

• GENT 1195-OR Manual call point

• GENT 7011 Beam detector (only oneper zone allowed. Plus a seperatepower supply is required.

2.4 Monitoring Fire DetectionCircuitsEffective monitoring of the fire detectioncircuits relies on the end-of-line capacitorunit being present. A capacitor unit mustbe fitted after the last detector or manualcall point on a fire detection circuit, seeFigure 1. As the end-of-line capacitor unitis connected to prevent a fault conditionbeing annunciated any fire detectioncircuits not being used should beterminated in, or adjacent to, the controlpanel with an end-of-line capacitor unit.

Notice: A fire detection circuit wiringmust be one continuous circuit with nospur circuits being permitted.

Notice: The use of capacitor(s) and anassociated monitoring circuit is thesubject of British Patent 2101784.Foreign filing has also been undertaken.

To permit the removal of a plug-in firedetector to be annunciated as an open-circuitfault but prevent subsequent detectors or callpoints from being disconnected, each firedetector base should be wired with a diode.

2.5 Alarm Sounder CircuitsTo comply with the requirements of BS5839: Part 1:1988, it is important thatboth alarm sounder circuits are used on allinstallations. Each alarm sounder circuitfor the 1,2 and 4 zone control panel israted at 24V 750mA, with a maximumalarm sounder current of 1 A distributedbetween the two alarm sounder circuits.The 8 zone control panel has each alarmsounder circuit rated at 24V 1.5A, with amaximum alarm sounder current of 2Adistributed between the two alarm soundercircuits.

The recommended devices for use are:

• GENT 2511 Electronic Sounder 24Vdc.

• GENT 2141 Electronic Bell

2.6 Monitoring of AlarmSounder CircuitsEach alarm sounder circuit is monitoredfor both short and open circuit wiringfault. This requires that the remote end ofeach alarm sounder circuit is fitted with a22K Ohm end-of-line resistor. An alarmsounder circuit wiring must be onecontinuous circuit with no spur circuitsbeing permitted. Also to allow themonitoring function to operate effectively,it is important that all sounders include aseries blocking diode that will only allowcurrent to flow through the sounders whenthe supply is polarised in accordance withthe terminal markings on the control panelprinted circuit board. For monitoringpurposes, each alarm sounder circuit isfed with a reversed polarity supply whichonly permits current to flow through theend-of-line resistor.

2.7 Class Change CircuitA pair of unmonitored terminals areprovided to permit the system alarmsounders to be actuated from a remoteposition. It is considered that the majoruse for these will be for class changefunctions in schools and colleges. Thewiring connecting these terminals to thenormally open initiating contacts is notmonitored for an open circuit fault. Cablelength is 100m maximum.

2.8 Auxiliary Relay ContactsA set of normally open contacts and anisolated set of normally closed contactshave been provided for triggeringauxiliary circuits. These contacts arerated at 24V d.c. 1A for a resistive load.These contacts should not be used toswitch voltages in excess of extra lowvoltage of 50V. Any auxiliary circuitsshould be powered from an independentpower supply and should not use thepower of the control panel as this mayhave a detrimental affect on batterystandby capability of the control panel.For the 1 and 2 zone control panel,these contacts operate with systemalarm sounders , whereas for the 4 and8 zone panel the contacts operate withonly the fire condition.

2.9 Repeat Panel Connections(Applicable for 4 & 8 ZoneControl Panels Only)The control panel include terminals forthe connection of a repeat panel to permitduplicate common fire and fault, togetherwith associated fire zone indications. The24V positive supply connection to therepeat panel is protected by a 1A fuse onthe printed circuit board in the controlpanel. The power supply is not intendedto be a source of power for other ancillarydevices.

3 Installation InstructionsIt is recommended thatthe installation bedelayed until all buildingwork has beencompleted in the vicinityof the control panelposition. This willprevent the possibility ofdirt degrading theperformance orappearance of the controlpanel.

a) Remove control panelfrom its packing butretain the carton forstorage of spare partsand loose items.

b) Open control panelfront cover using the keyprovided and ifnecessary remove doorby extracting the hingefixing.

c) Remove the innercover of the controlpanel by removing itsfasteners.

d) Check the spares parts supplied withthose listed in Table 1. If replacementparts are required at any time, only sparesthat are of the same specification shouldbe used.

e) Remove the appropriate knock-outs onthe control panel case for cable entry. The4 or 8 zone control panel case hasknockouts provided to allow rear cableentry.

f) Hold the control panel on the wall inthe desired mounting position and markthe positions of the fixing holes. SeeFigure 3 for case fixing details.

g) Secure the control panel to the wallusing suitable fixing such that adequatesupport is provided to the control panelassembly. A top centre keyhole fixing isprovided on the case to allow the panel tobe hooked whilst the bottom two fixingpoints are located.

h) Terminate the cables into theappropriate terminal blocks on the printedcircuit board.

Note: Each customer terminal on theprinted circuit board would accept amaximum conductor size of 2.5mmsquare.

i) If it is not intended that the system becommissioned at this stage, the innercover and the front cover should berefitted and the system left without power.

j) Store spare parts and loose componentsincluding the batteries inside the controlpanel carton and keep in a safe place untilrequired.

4 One Man Commissioningand TestThe total system should be tested inaccordance with the commissioningrequirements of BS5839:Part 1:1988 orother standard specified by the systempurchaser.

a) When the system is to becommissioned, the batteries should beconnected as shown in Figure 4 and themains power supply connected. Ensurethe batteries are placed on the support(s)provided and securely fixed to the back ofthe case by using the sticky backed pads.

b) With the power supplied, the controlpanel should now be operational and thegreen power on lamp should beilluminated.

c)To facilitate commissioning and testingof this control panel, by one manservicing, a four way connector has beenincluded on the printed circuit boarddesignated P4 for the 1 and 2 zone controlpanels, and P7 for the 4 and 8 zonecontrol panels. A small black shorting linkis supplied to enable the control panel intoeither commissioning or test mode.

Test mode

To enable the control panel into the testmode, fit the shorting link across the twopins of connector P4 or P7 as shown inFigure 5. The fire detection circuit(s) willthen appear disabled. However, in thismode any detector operated will be reset,automatically, after approximately sevenseconds, without giving any indication onthe control panel or starting the alarmsounders.

Commissioning mode

To enable the control panel into theCommissioning mode, fit the shorting linkacross the two pins of connector P4 or P7as shown in Figure 5. The fire detectioncircuit(s) will then appear disabled.However, in this mode any detector ormanual call point made active will causesystem alarm sounders to signal for twoseconds and subsequently a panel reset isperformed automatically afterapproximately seven seconds.

d) After each zone circuit has beencommissioned or tested it can be enabledseparately to operate as normal, seesection 5.5.

Important:The shorting link MUST BEREMOVED from connector P4 or P7to restore the control panel to thenormal mode.

e) Write zone identification name onto thezone designation label, if provided, suchthat the name is adjacent to the respectivezone Fire and Fault lamps on the innercover of the control panel.

f) The label backing should then be peeledoff and label stuck onto the inner cover toallow appropriate zone indicator lamps toappear through cutout of the label.

g) Arrangements should now be made tothe ongoing maintenance of theinstallation as required by BS5839:Part1:1988 . GENT will provide a quotationfor this service upon request.

Note: The batteries supplied with thispanel have a self-dischargingcharacteristic during storage. If anypanels are put into service after theBattery Storage Expiry Date and whenpowered up a “Battery Fault” condition isinitiated, please contact the StockistRepresentative or Internal Sales Engineerat your local GENT office.

Under normal operating conditions thebatteries can have a useful life of up to 5Years from the date of their manufacture.The REPLACE BY DATE shown on thebattery label is calculated at 4 Years frommanufacture and it is stronglyrecommended that the batteries are changedby this date.

5 Operating Instructions The control panel provides systemsecurity by virtue of the lockable door andprovides clear indication of the indicatorlamps and easily readable instructions forthe system operator.

The automatic functions of the controlpanel, includes the annunciation of fireand fault conditions of the fire detectionand alarm system, without the need tooperate any of the push buttons control.Silencing of alarm sounders and the faultbuzzer, re-sounding of the alarm soundersand the operation of the test functions dorequire the operation of push buttons andthese are protected against unauthorisedactuation by the lockable hinged frontcover of the control panel. Once this coveris lowered, all push buttons are exposed,as are the basic instructions required bythe operator.

5.1Fire Condition• Common fire lamps are on

• Appropriate zone fire lamps are on, ifapplicable

• Internal fire buzzer is actuated

• System alarm sounders are actuated

• Any auxiliary equipment is actuated

• Any automatic link to the Fire Brigadeis initiated

Suggested action tosilence alarms andreset the system:

a) Press SILENCEALARMS push afteremergency is over.Notice the systemalarm Sounders aresilenced and internalfire buzzer changes tofault/supervisorybuzzer output. Allother fire conditionstatus remain active.

b) Press RESET pushafter the cause of thealarm has beeninvestigated, ensuresmoke and excess heathave had time to clear

from automatic detectors and brokenmanual call point glasses have beenreplaced where necessary. All the controlpanel indications and outputs will returnto their normal condition.

5.2 To Sound AlarmsIf it is necessary to actuate the alarmsounders when there is no fire indicated,or to re-sound the alarm sounders afterthey have been cancelled during a firecondition, for this the SOUND ALARMSpush should be pressed. The alarmsounders are then cancelled by pressingthe SILENCE ALARMS push.

5.3 Fault Condition• Common fault lamp is on

• Appropriate fault indicators are on

• Internal Fault/Supervisory Buzzer isactuated

Suggested action to rectify fault condition:

Press CANCEL FAULT BUZZER pushafter investigating fault. Notice the buzzeris silenced but other indications remainactive.

The fault lamps will be automaticallyextinguished once the fault condition isrectified. If the system detects a fireduring a fault condition the faultindicators may be extinguished. Details ofthe indications relating to specific faultconditions are shown in Table 2. Multiplefaults are simultaneously annunciatedwhen this does not cause confusion.However, a mains failure conditionoverrides all other fault indications inorder to preserve battery standby capacity.

5.4 To Test Lamps and BuzzerPress LAMP TEST push. All lampsshould be illuminated and theFault/Supervisory Buzzer should soundfor a period of approximately 2 seconds.

5.5 To Disable or Enable a FireDetection Zone (Available with4 or 8 zone control panel only)This function may beused for systemmaintenance purpose orfor the prevention ofinadvertent alarms whilethere is generalmaintenance or buildingwork being undertaken inareas protected byautomatic fire detectors.

Zone Disable

a) Press SELECT ZONEpush. This will cause oneof the amber zone faultindicator lamps to be onsteady. Repeatedly press the push until thenew zone lamp associated with the zoneto be disabled is on steady.

b) Press the DISABLE ZONE push untilthe steady indication disappears.

For any disabled zone(s) the indicator willpulse and the zone disabled warning lampwill be on. Also the fault/supervisorybuzzer will be on and will not cancel untilall zones are re-enabled.

Zone Enable

a) Press the RESET push.

b) Press the SELECT ZONE push untilthe appropriate zone indicator lamp is onsteady.

c) Press the ENABLE ZONE push and thezone will be enabled. Repeatedly press theSELECT ZONE push until the steadyindication disappears.

6 Routine TestingDailyThe British Standard Code of Practice forFire Detection and Alarm Systems forbuildings, BS 5839:Part 1:1988, statesthat the system should be inspected dailyto ensure that it is indicating a normalcondition and that any previouslyindicated Fault and Warning condition hasreceived appropriate attention. Itrecommends entry into the log bookprovided of all system events for futurereference.

WeeklyAt weekly intervals a different firedetector or manual call point of thesystem should be tested. The test shouldbe performed at regular time to avoidconfusion between a test and a genuinealarm. This would also provide a regularreminder to those occupying the premisesthat there is a fire alarm system with aparticular characteristic sound.

QuarterlyAt quarterly intervals the system shouldbe inspected and any work necessaryshould be performed by a trained engineerresponsible for the system.

6.1 Log BookTo comply with the requirements of BS5839:Part 1:1988 and to allow thoseconcerned with the fire detection andalarm systems to monitor the long termperformance of the system, it is importantthat a log is kept which includes all theevents relating to the performance of thesystem.

Fire/Fault Interface Unit (for 3260 4/8 Zone Control Panel) 1. INTRODUCTIONThis leaflet provides sufficient information toinstall the 3260 Fire/Fault Interface Unit, code13260-41, and connect it to a 3260 (4/8Zone) Control Panel. This Interface Unit isintended to allow a 3260 Control Panel tolink with another fire detection system.

2. INSTALLATIONMount the Unit using the four holes locatedat each corner of the container.

Place the unit in the desired position and markthe four fixing holes onto the surface to whichthe unit is to be mounted.

Drill the four fixing holes and mount the uniton the surface with suitable fixings such thatadequate support is provided.

Terminate the cable at entry points andconnect the ends into the appropriateterminals on the printed circuit board, seeFigure 1.

CAUTION: Failure to make theconnections correctly can result in damageto the unit.

CAUTION: It is important NOT toundertake insulation tests of wiring withthe wires connected into their intendedterminals. THE ELECTRONICCOMPONENTS MAY BE SERIOUSLYDAMAGED.

PCB Connection details

The 4/8 Zone Panels have terminals providedfor a repeat indicator and these are used formaking connections to the Interface board, seeFigure 1 and Table 1.

External connections can bealtered by changing the links:

For signalling fire and fault toa zone of 3250,3260 or 3440fit X1, X4 (EOL Cap unit isalready fitted to Interface PCB).

For Signalling fire and fault tozone of 3228/3280 fit X2,X3,X4(EOL 2K2 resistor is alreadyfitted to Interface PCB).

For Separate SPCO contactsfor fire and fault fit X3 only.

Note - The on board alarmrelay for connection to aremote sounder circuit ispolarised and suppressed. If itis used at the end of amonitored circuit a suitablemonitoring component must beadded across the AS+, AS-terminals.

4/8 Zone 3260 Panels These panels have terminals provided for arepeat indicator and these are used formaking connections to the Interface Unit, seeTable 1 and Figure 1.

External Connections

The Interface Unit PCB has three links, formost applications all three are removed.

Fitting LK1 - Connects contact common withthe positive supply.

Fitting LK2 - Connects contact common withthe negative supply.

Fitting LK3 - Connects the sounder controlrelay coil to the common terminal. (Relayoperated by supply between B and Common).

CAUTION: LK1 and LK2 should NEVERbe fitted at the same time.
