An Expedient Alternative
FLOATING SOLAR
The low efficiency of conversion in conjunction with multiple losses till the point of actual use, calls for
large tracts of land for utility scale power generation for which converting fertile agricultural and other
productive land to set up solar farms would not be wise. Also in many cases lands have to be cleared
of thick vegetation that provide lung space. An attractive alternative to the land based solar
generation is to utilize the surface of water bodies like lakes, ponds, reservoirs, dams which come at
no cost. PV systems floating on the water surface would be an effective method to reduce
evaporation losses as they would reduce substantially the sunrays from reaching the water below.
One of the leading suppliers of Floating PV systems has claimed that water losses could be reduced
to as much as 70% and makes a good case for these systems.

Gensol’s Floating Solar – A Glance
A techno commercial feasibility analysis of three prominent reservoirs
of Maharashtra for land- neutral floating
Project Developer - Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd. ( MAHAGENCO)
Project Capacity – 250 MW
Proposed Project Location – 1) Erai Reservoir 2) Bhatsa Dam 3) Ujjani Dam
Service Offered – Owner’s Engineer
Project Status – On going
Gensol’s Scope
Gensol was engaged in intrinsic project plan to carry out an in-depth assessment of long-term energy yields, technology
choices and Contractors, alongside a review of technical inputs to the financial model and planning and grid connection
arrangements. In doing so, Gensol’s maven army of technical and engineering advisors was able to provide a long-term
commercial viable project ahead of the huge investment. A detailed project report which purely ponders on technical
aspects, Environmental & Social impact on the catchment and also on the financial feasibility of the project was
submitted. The project would be set up based on the project likelihood in PPP mode with a
competitive tariff bidding process.
2 MW Grid Interactive Floating Solar Project at Barvi Dam,
Thane District, Maharashtra
Project Developer - Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC)
Project Capacity – 2 MW
Proposed Project Location – Barvi Dam
Service Offered – Techno – Commercial Feasibility Study
Project Status – Completed
Gensol’s Scope
Gensol proposed the installation of 2.00 MW (AC)/ 2.34 MWp (DC) of Grid Interactive Floating Solar Plant at Barvi
Dam on the available catchment area of 3.79 Acres. The techno – commercial feasibility study encloses energy yield
calculations, basic system design, solar radiation assessment, project catchment area feasibility with the selected
technology, analysis of permits and clearance, load calculations and evacuation feasibility, project specific cost
estimates for the installation of solar PV plant.

4 MW Floating Solar Plant at the Artificial Reservoir for captive power
consumption, Salem, Tamil Nadu
Project Developer - Jindal Steel Works Pvt Ltd (JSW)
Project Capacity – 4 MW
Proposed Project Location – Artificial Reservoir of JSW at Salem
Service Offered – Feasibility report and Detailed Engineering
Project Status – Completed
Gensol’s Scope
Gensol offered JSW initially a technical feasibility report which was mainly highlighted with Energy yield estimation
of the plant, technical compatibility of the modules, inverters and BOS wr.t high humid conditions and temperature,
loss optimization of floating solar plant, methodology of module cleaning system, customized BOM for floato
voltaics assignments etc. Study was conducted and Gensol proposed a viable techno-commercial solution for
monitoring the floating solar plant. In line with the feasibility study Gensol was engaged in Detailed Designing of
electrical DC, AC , civil, Structural and layout drawings.
