Post-hardcore and all the other ‘core’ genres mixed – what sort of audience range is there?

From the beginning with Led Zeppelin there Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, there has always been a large fan base, yet due to the nature of the ‘heavy-ness’ of the music it is largely associated with a male culture with the anger/violence connoted through the music and performance style (moshing, head banging, wall of death, ‘arm thrust’). However as time went on the favoured audience widened to those who also preferred ‘light metal’ or ‘hair metal’ and a more female based fan structure. And in the present day ‘hardcore’ metal bands have fans who also enjoy the acoustic versions or a wide range of genres.
