This picture shows my journey to the newsstand!!!!

The sports genre caught my eye the most because of the excellent photography on the central images of the magazines. Overall, I thought that Sports Illustrated had the best photography and table of contents, but ESPN the Magazine had the best design and table of contents.

Newsstand reflection

The newsstand pilgrimage really inspired me. It gave me ideas for creative concepts that I can incorporate into my own magazine. The photography and design of the magazines caught my attention the most. Specifically, the design on the lastest Sports Illustrated magazine caught my attention for ideas to put in my own magazine.

Inspirational magazine

Sports Illustrated is the most inspirational magazine to me. The central image and design combination is what made the magazine most inspirational for me.

Inspirational magazine My inspirational magazine is the January 12, 2015 issue of Sports Illustrated. This particular issue is previewing the NFL Playoffs and College Football Championship. The target audience for this magazine is sports fans in general. Specifically, the audience demographics are mostly middle to upper class males who are single and white. In this magazine, the articles inside include a preview of the NFL Playoffs, an article about Florida Gator’s basketball player Chris Walker, a preview of the College Football Championship, an article following New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski, and an article about Denver Broncos’ John Elway.

Inspirational magazine

The central image on the covers is usually either a one person action shot or a studio shot with a particular athlete or teammates. They are either taken on the field or in a studio. Sports Illustrated greatly varies their covers. However, they always either use a white masthead, or a masthead color that matches the central image.

Favorite cover image

This is my favorite cover because of the high quality central image photo. I also find the way that they arranged their coverlines to be interesting and inspirational for my own magazine cover.

Table of contents

These tables of contents are all similar in the fact that they all feature pictures of an athlete featured in the magazine while off of the court or field. As far as colors and design schemes, each table of contents is significantly different.

2 Page Spread

2 Page Spread

2 Page spreads

Both these 2 page spreads are very different. The 1st is more formal looking with standardized columns and 1 main central image with one additional image on the side. My 2nd 2 page spread has 2 symmetrical columns with 3 images, none of them being the main one.
