Genre Definition
• Genre means ‘type’ or ‘kind’ in French.• ‘Film genres are various forms or identifiable types, categories,
classifications or groups of films that are recurring and have similar, familiar or instantly-recognisable patterns, syntax, filmic techniques or conventions.’• Many films are considered hybrids - they straddle several film genres.
Genre definitions broadly split into to camps:• more rigid definitions – traditionally
for Mainstream commercial (Hollywood) audiences• more flexible definitions – often
used presented for more Independent (alternative) or niche audiences.
Sub-genres
Sub genres are identifiable sub-classes within the larger film genre, with their own distinctive subject matter, style, formulas, and iconography.
