Indietronica“Indietronica (also called Indie electronic) is a music genre that combines indie, electronica, rock and pop music. “

Classification into this genre is usually dependent on the use instruments used. These common instruments include electronic keyboard, synthesizer, sampler, software synthesizer, MIDI controller, and drum machine.

It is also closely related to the relatively less electronic and more acoustic Chillwave (glo-fi) movement. (bands placed in this genre include the acclaimed ‘Neon Indian’ and Chaz Bundick’s ‘Toro Y Moi’.

Justice, The Postal Service, Ratatat and Broadcast are all said to be the genius’ behind the start of this genre.

Synthpop

“Synthpop (also known as electropop, or technopop) is a genre of popular music that first became prominent in the 1980s, in which the synthesizer is the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic art rock, disco and particularly the "Krautrock" of bands like Kraftwerk.”

This genre is very broad, obviously containing a marathon amount of bands. It can also be said that it is the godfather of smaller or more niche sub genres including our indietronica, alternative dance, electronica, dance-pop, house, electro to only name a select few.

Post Punk“Post-punk is a rock music genre that paralleled and emerged from the initial punk rock explosion of the late 1970s. The genre is an artier and more experimental form of punk. Post-punk laid the groundwork for alternative rock by broadening the range of punk and underground music, incorporating elements of krautrock (particularly the use of synthesizers and extensive repetition), dub music, American funk and studio experimentation into the genre.”

Again this is a very large genre and the list of bands is endless. Big names include Orange Juice, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Flaming Lips, The Monochrome Set, R.E.M and personal favorite Talking Heads.

This genre could arguably be the most influential ever.

New Wave

“New wave music is an ambiguous category of pop or rock music from between the late 1970s to mid-1980s with ties to the original wave of punk rock. New wave music was first considered the same as punk rock before being identified as a genre in its own right, incorporating aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, disco and pop music.”
