To explain the primary purpose of the use of GenoPro® as a tool that supports the two components of the Family Network Diagram. Genogram and EcoMap.

To explain the fundamentals of the GenoPro® application, and its’ applicability for child welfare practice in Indiana.

Slide 3 ‐ Family Network Diagram

Audio Script:

The Family Network Diagram is the current tool available to assess the family structure. It combines both the Genogram and the Ecomap to identify the family’s relationships, as well as the family’s community connections.

More information on the Family Network Diagram is available in Chapter 5 (Tools), and Chapter 12 (Section 10) of the Indiana Department of Child Services Child Welfare Manual.

Slide 4 ‐ Genogram

Audio Script:

The Genogram is designed to reveal family relationships and their interactions as far back as three generations, and can go beyond the family tree to unveil emotional and social relationships, repetitive patterns of behavior, and hereditary tendencies.

Slide 5 ‐ Genogram Symbols

Audio Script:

The Genogram has symbols to represent each identifying component; such as male, female, pet, adopted child, biological child, pregnancy, etc.

Slide 6 ‐ EcoMap

Audio Script:

The EcoMap expounds on the family members identified in the Genogram by displaying their significant involvements in the community. The EcoMap can track various community connections; such as employment, social activities, medical treatment and educational achievements.

Slide 7 ‐ What is GenoPro?

GenoPro® is an advanced software tool that supports the components of the Family Network Diagram into a more efficient and automated process. GenoPro® is designed to create family trees from the simplest and most traditional family compositions to the most complex family systems. It is accessible and can be instrumental in aiding the discovery of the family systems and connections within the following field practices:

Child and Family Team Meetings

Permanency and Concurrent Planning

Absent or Non‐custodial parent searches

Home‐studies and relative placements

Foster Care Licensing

Slide 8 ‐ How to Use Genopro

Audio Script:

To demonstrate the use of GenoPro®, a vignette of a family was created. The objective is to walk through the family’s description to develop a Genogram. Please note that this family’s story is fictitious, and was created for the purpose of exploring the faculties of this tool.

Slide 9 ‐ The Stone Family

Audio Script:

Samantha Stone is 15 years old. She is a ninth grader and attends East Side High School. She told her Guidance Counselor that her mother’s fiancé molested her four years ago. Samantha reports that she told her mother about the abuse, but her mother refused to believe her. DCS gets involved and assesses the family situation.

Samantha lives with her mother, Caroline Stone, 35, the fiancé, Donald Jones, 29, and her younger siblings, Sherry Smith, 13, and Caren Jones, 5.

Slide 10 ‐ The Stone Family 2

Audio Script:

Samantha’s biological father, Jack Stone, and her mother were married, but divorced when she was five years old. Samantha’s father’s whereabouts are unknown, however her paternal aunt, Jackie Stone remains involved. Samantha and her half‐sister Sherry are close, but they don’t get along with their youngest sister, Caren. They believe she receives special treatment. Samantha’s mother works part‐time at Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store. Her mother’s fiancé, Donald Jones, is a construction worker. The family does not have a church affiliation, and are not involved in any social activities. Samantha loves math and belongs to the Math Club at East Side High. Samantha has a very close relationship with Yolanda Sanchez, the teacher in charge of the Math Club.

Slide 11 ‐ GenoPro Simulation 1‐1

To start a new family from the GenoPro® main screen, click the Family Wizard button on the toolbar.

The Family Wizard simplifies the process of creating a new family. It is important to gather the birth dates, and dates of death (if applicable) for all relevant family members including the children from each relationship. The Family Wizard also allows you to include additional family combinations, such as new mates, and any subsequent children. In this example, the information for Jack and Caroline Stone has been entered for you. Click Add…, to add a new child for Jack and Caroline Stone.

This screen allows you to add a new child for Jack and Caroline Stone. In this example, Samantha Stone’s information has been added for you. Click OK to finish adding Samantha.

Samantha has now been added as a child of Jack and Caroline Stone. Click OK, to close the Family Wizard and view the Stone Family Tree.

This is a very basic Stone Family Tree. Now let’s add an additional family member. Click on Caroline Stone to select her.

With Caroline selected, click on the Family Wizard to begin adding additional family members.

To add additional mates and/or children, follow the same process as creating the base family. The current screen shows that Sherry Smith has been added as a child of Caroline Stone and Shawn Smith. Click OK to close the Family Wizard.

Slide 19 ‐ Family Relationships Key

Audio Script:

After establishing the family composition, it is useful to define the family relationships between family members, particularly the adults, identified in the genogram. This is the Family Relationships Key used in GenoPro® to further explain the relationships within the family. When you are finished viewing this slide, click Continue.

In this example, we will specify the relationship between Caroline and Jack Stone. To access the family relationship key, right‐click on the line between Caroline and Jack Stone.

Select Relation from the pop up menu, and the Family Relationships menu will appear.

Caroline and Jack Stone are divorced. Select Divorce from the Family Relationships menu.

This is an example of what the Stone family relationships would look like once completed. It shows that Caroline is divorced from Samantha’s father, Jack Stone. The story does not specify the extent of Caroline’s relationship with Shawn Smith, the father of her second child, Sherry, but it is safe to assume they are separated. Currently, Caroline is engaged and living with her fiancé, Donald Jones. You can see the family relationships defined on the genogram. When you are finished viewing this slide, click Continue.

Slide 25 ‐ Emotional Relationships Key

After establishing the Family Relationships, you can further define the emotional relationships among all of the family members. This is the Emotional Relationships Key used in GenoPro®. When you are finished viewing this slide, click Continue.

Let’s identify the emotional relationship between Samantha and her mother Caroline. To access the Emotional Relationships Menu, right‐click on Samantha’s name to view the popup menu.

Select New Emotional Relationship, and the Emotional Relationships Menu will appear.

Since Caroline did not believe or trust Samantha when she disclosed the abuse, select Distrust from the Emotional Relationships menu.

This is what the emotional relationships between members of Samantha’s family would look like when added to the genogram. Samantha and her sister Sherry have a close and harmonious relationship with each other but a conflicting relationship with their youngest sister, Caren. Samantha also has a close relationship with her paternal aunt, Jackie Stone. Samantha’s biological father is uninvolved, but both Samantha and Sherry are close to Sherry’s father, Shawn Smith. As a quick reference, you can use the emotional relationship symbols toolbar at the bottom of the screen. When you are finished viewing this slide, click Continue.

GenoPro® also allows you to record each family member's social relationships that provide extended or emotional support, like a mentor, pastor, or a relative. In the Stone family story it stated that Samantha was very close to Yolanda Sanchez, the teacher in charge of the Math Club at East Side High. To add a social relationship between Yolanda and Samantha, you must first add Yolanda to the genogram. To begin, click the circular symbol on the GenoPro® toolbar, to add a new female.

When Yolanda’s symbol appears, click on the symbol to place her near Samantha on the genogram.

After you have placed Yolanda near Samantha, right‐click on Samantha, and a popup menu will appear.

Select New Social Relationship from the popup menu, and an arrow will appear.

Click on Yolanda's symbol to show a social relationship between her and Samantha.

The social connection between Samantha and Yolanda now appears on the genogram. You may notice that although you have added a symbol for Yolanda Sanchez, her name does not appear on the genogram. GenoPro® has a Properties section that allows you to record a wide range of information for each family member represented in the genogram. To access the Properties for Yolanda Sanchez, right‐click on her symbol to view the popup menu.

The Properties screen includes several tabs to enter relevant information for each person identified on the genogram. The tabs range from birth information, education, occupation, to a picture screen. This feature can act as a guidance tool to prompt field staff to collect detailed information about each individual. In this example, Yolanda Sanchez’s name has been entered for you. Click OK to continue.

Yolanda Sanchez’s name now appears on the genogram. Next, let’s explore some of the other tabs in the properties area. Begin by right‐clicking on Caroline Stone.

This tab allows you to enter the job title, company name, work type, and employment history of each family member. In the Stone family story, Caroline was a part‐time cashier at a grocery store. You can see her information has been entered here. Click OK to continue.

Now it’s time to explore the Pictures tab. Begin by right‐clicking on Samantha Stone.

Select the Pictures Tab.

The Pictures tab can store photos of each family member. It can also store other information such as when and where the photo was taken, along with a description or comments. In this example, a picture of Samantha has been added. When you add a picture, a small red box will appear on the upper right side of their name located on the genogram. Clicking on this box allows quick access to this feature. Click OK to continue.

Now, let's explore the Custom Tags tab. Begin by right‐clicking on Yolanda Sanchez.

Custom tags allow you to enter a brief description, or narrative, relevant to the selected family member or social relationship. In this example, it shows that Yolanda Sanchez is a strong supporter of Samantha. Click OK to continue.

GenoPro® can also store properties for social relationships; for example, any relevant information about the relationship between Samantha, and her math club teacher Yolanda. Right‐click on the arrow that identifies the social relationship between Samantha and Yolanda Sanchez.

In this example, Yolanda has been identified as a teacher of Samantha, and a comment has been entered stating that Samantha and Yolanda have a close and trusting relationship. Click OK to continue.

Now let’s add information about the family’s social connections. To add a new social connection, click the pyramid symbol on the toolbar.

A new box will appear with a list that reads: school, church, club, committee, organization, etc. You can place this box near the family member for whom you wish to record social connections. Double‐click on the box to view the social entity narrative.

The social entity feature can be used to identify the social connections of each individual family member, or the family as a whole. In this example, Samantha Stone has been identified as being a member of the Math Club at East Side High School. You can differentiate between social entity boxes by using Display Options to change their color, text size, border styles, or alignment. Click OK to continue.

The social entity box is now displayed on the genogram. GenoPro® also allows you to control which properties display on the genogram. Display options are accessed via the display menu.

The display menu allows you to display various properties on the genogram, such as occupation, custom tags, dates of birth, etc.

This is what the completed Stone family genogram might look like. The finished product can include the family members, their emotional and family relationships, social relationships, social connections, and narrative statements from the custom tags. Slide 61 ‐ Storage of the GenoPro File

Audio Script:

The electronic file should be saved on the computer that has GenoPro® installed. Any updates to the Family Network Diagram can then be made using GenoPro®, and can be saved under a different file name. The GenoPro® file is not currently able to be stored in ICWIS, therefore, a hard copy of the Family Network Diagram should be included in the hard copy case file that is applicable (CHINS, foster home file, etc.). The Family Network Diagram can also be copied and pasted into a Microsoft Word document for display purposes if needed.

GenoPro® is available to assist field staff in gathering family information in an efficient and automated way. To download GenoPro®, click the link or visit the web address on your screen. It is best to save the installation file to your computer’s desktop for easy accessibility. When you are ready to install the software on your computer, double‐click the installation file you saved to your desktop and follow the on‐screen prompts.
