With a combined population of 16,557, the city and town of Geneva boast a strong economic climate, from successful family-owned farms, to world-famous wineries, to international cor-porations. Located in the heart of central New York, Geneva is just an hour from Rochester and Syracuse, two hours from Buffalo, three hours from Albany and Toronto, and only five hours from New York City, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. Easily accessed, Geneva is located at the junction of routes 5/20 and 14, just south of NYS Thruway Exit 42. State routes 14 and 96 connect Geneva to neighboring communities, while U.S. Route 20 and Interstate 90 to the world beyond.

Geneva offers rich history as well as contem-porary convenience. The city traces its begin-nings from the Seneca Native American village of Kanadesaga and owes much of its development to the New York State Canal System, which established it as a shipping hub. Incorporated in 1806, Geneva became the first western New York community to have an official post office, dedicated church, glass factory, YMCA, and free public library.

House hunting in Geneva is a pleasant surprise for families relocating to the Finger Lakes area. With median prices

in the $100,000 range and a wide variety of home styles to choose from, the cost of home ownership is relatively low compared to many other parts of the country.

The variety of home styles includes historic houses, lakeside cottages, turn-of-the-century farmhouses, and newer homes with modern amenities like walk-in closets, home offices, and spacious kitchens. Prices range from as little as $50,000 to more than $2 million. A cozy and charming three-bedroom Cape Cod built

in 1928 can be had for $98,000. Upgrading is affordable as well. A five-bedroom, two-bath lakeside home lists for $369,000, while a cus-tom-built four-bedroom, three-bath ranch home with modern amenities and lake views goes for $315,000.

Many historic two-story homes, some more than 100 years old, are located in the downtown area. Wide front porches, hardwood floors, and full basements add to their charm and value. Away from downtown, homes are situated on larger lots with spacious lawns.

First-time and budget-minded homebuy-ers will find many affordable options, such as

Diversity DrivenWith a prime location only a short drive from

Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca, Geneva boasts a prosperous mix of employers, including those in the health care, education, manufacturing, research, retail, and hospitality sectors.

DOWnTOWn AS DESTInATIOnThe Lakefront Downtown Development Plan

and the City Master Plan have played major roles in turning historic downtown Geneva into a des-tination mixed-use district that includes niche

housing, government, finance, retail, tourism-related business, and entertainment. The 60-acre lakefront features walking and biking trails, picnic areas, and a boat launch. Beautiful scen-ery combines with unique shops, eateries, and cultural amenities to create an appealing district that continues to evolve. Future projects include a modern Visitors Center and Boat Museum.

BECkOnInG BIG InDuSTrYThe city scored a major victory in 1998 when

Guardian Industries chose Geneva’s Industrial

Park as the site for its $130 million glass plant. Today the company employs more than 300 people. Zotos International, a hair care products manufacturer, has also worked with regional and state officials to help fund expan-sion and create new jobs.

“We worked with Zotos to help assemble the funding needed to bring their spray can manufacturing in-house,” said Valerie Bassett, director of Geneva’s Department of Economic Development. Recently Zotos embarked on a $7 million wind project aimed at powering its 670,000-square-foot plant with 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2011. Bassett noted that city, state, and county economic development programs played a major part in getting the project off the ground.

FArM FOunDATIOnAgriculture is also a key industry. The Finger

Lakes region is the nation’s second-largest pro-ducer of wine, and many family-owned farms, vineyards, and orchards are located in the Geneva area. Red Jacket Orchards began as a small roadside stand in 1958 and has grown to include seven farms located in an eight-mile radius from the packinghouse.

The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station fosters economic growth by enhancing rural development through cutting-edge research techniques. The adjacent Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park, established in 2005, fosters the creation of innovative technolo-gies on its 72-acre campus. Tenants collaborate

Economic Development and Incentives BuSInESS IMPrOVEMEnT DISTrICT

Geneva’s Business Improvement District (BID), founded in 1986, leads efforts to preserve, revitalize, and market the downtown business district. BID fosters a downtown that is safe and attractive to property owners, business people, tenants, shoppers, and visitors. BID’s programs focus on architectural design and preservation, economic planning and development, and busi-ness recruitment, retention, marketing, promo-tion, and unification.

After making significant improvements in the aesthetics of downtown, a major goal is to generate more interest in vacant buildings and other areas of the city that lend themselves to redevelopment. Eight downtown projects have benefited from Restore New York funding, which helped revitalize buildings that might otherwise have been lost.

DOWnTOWn rEVITALIzATIOn LOAnS

A Downtown Revitalization Loan Program (DRLP) provides loan assistance to business and property owners in downtown Geneva. Local banks offer reduced-rate loans to prop-erty owners and retail tenants within the district for interior improvements, façade improvements, working capital, and equip-ment. In collaboration with Geneva BID, four area banks developed a special rate loan pro-gram, the Property Improvement Preferred Plan (PIPP), which offers special incentives to Geneva BID property owners to stimulate continued renewal in downtown.

DEPArTMEnT OF ECOnOMIC DEVELOPMEnT AnD PLAnnInG

The Department of Economic Development and Planning is a timesaver for those who are considering the startup or expansion of a business. According to Director Valerie Bassett, the department works with both large and small businesses to provide low-interest loans, business counseling, and information on state and county incentives. Assistance is also available for grants, façade improvements, public infrastructure, and housing programs.

GEnEVA InDuSTrIAL DEVELOPMEnT AuTHOrITY

Geneva Industrial Development Authority (IDA) is a seven-member nonprofit agency work-ing to create new jobs and expand the tax base of Geneva. The IDA provides industrial bond financing for taxable and tax-exempt eligible projects, as well as bond assistance for a number of nonprofit facilities for hospitals, colleges, and senior housing. The IDA maintains a variety of partnerships with the city of Geneva, Ontario County, and the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station, which offer a range of business assis-tance programs and development services.

The IDA also owns and manages the Geneva Enterprise Development Center industrial incubator and the Geneva Industrial Park.

HOMETOWn SuCCESS STOrYJohn Eades and Michael Ferreri returned to

their hometown in 2009 in search of a place to produce Vere Sandals, their made-in-America line of footwear. Thanks to assistance from the Economic Development Office, IDA, and fund-ing from local investors, the entrepreneurs are on track to begin filling orders by early 2011. The high-quality comfort sandals, made entirely from recycled materials, will be manufactured in a 12,000-square-foot facility at the Geneva Enterprise Development Center.

Medical care in Geneva is anchored by Finger Lakes Health, which offers two hospitals, four long-term care facilities, four primary care family health centers, an ambulatory surgery center, and specialty practices in cardiology and dermatology. With more than 1,600 employees, it is the area’s largest employer.

Geneva General Hospital (GGH) pro-vides primary care and secondary level services. Diagnostic modalities include a 64-slice CT scan-ner, nuclear medicine, MRI, cardiovascular diag-nostics, and complete gastroenterology service.

Other facilities include the Family Birth Center, a renal dialysis center, and an acute physical rehabilitation program. established medical practices, shares the campus with Geneva General Hospital. It is the largest multi-specialty practice in the Finger Lakes area.

The experienced team includes internal medicine physicians, cardiologists, obstetrician/gynecologists, pediatricians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, a nephrologist, and a urolo-gist. Along with an aggressive road patrol, police services include a crime-prevention unit, bicycle patrol, foot patrol, and drug enforcement. The department also provides School Resource Officers and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) for area schools and works with Neighborhood Watch groups to address public safety issues involving neighborhood security.

fire-Department.htmlThe Geneva Fire Department is made up of the Hydrant Hose Company, the Nester Hose Company, and the C.J. Folger Hook & Ladder Company. The department is staffed by 120 professional firefighters, including 18 career firefighters and more than 100 active volunteers. The career staff is responsible for driving and operating the department’s apparatus, conducting fire-safety inspections in commercial occupancies and places of public assembly, and conducting educational programs for the public. Volunteer firefighters spend thousands of hours in training and respond to hundreds of fire department emergencies within the city each year. Ten civilian dispatchers monitor the Enhanced 911 System.

The Finger Lakes region is a popular attraction for its gorgeous scenery and its wide range of activities for all ages.

As the last ice age ended, glaciers from the north receded and carved out what is now the Finger Lakes region, including the lakes, gorges, and waterfalls. Nine of the 11 Finger Lakes offer unlimited access to a full range of water activi-ties, including swimming, sailing, fishing, canoe-ing, and kayaking. Additionally, the Erie Canal runs along the northern part of the Finger Lakes region. It is still open for recreational use, and the lock system still operates. Geneva’s lakefront is a popular spot for jogging, cycling, picnicking, and summer concerts, while historic downtown offers must-see attractions like the Smith Opera House and Prouty-Chew House.

The Geneva Recreation Department super-vises 11 city parks and the Geneva Recreation Complex, which offers a plethora of community activities that include adult tennis tournaments, women’s softball, girls lacrosse, kickball, street hockey, and preschool recreational activities. Exercise classes include Pilates, Tai-Chi, yoga, cardio resistance, and flex and tone. The Geneva Ice Complex provides instruction in figure skat-ing and hockey and hosts numerous tourna-ments and competitions. The Ice Complex is home to the Geneva Generals, the Geneva High

School Hockey Team, and the Hobart Statesmen. Seasonal programs include arts and crafts, sports leagues, and field trips. The weekly downtown Farmers Market operates from June until mid-October and offers a variety of seasonal produce.

Surrounded by scenic hills dotted with vine-yards, Seneca Lake is revered for its panoramic vistas. The “Lake Trout Capital of the World” attracts water sports enthusiasts who enjoy boat-ing, fishing, sailing, and swimming. Geneva is at the northern tip of the lake, while Watkins Glen, at the southern tip, is best known for its International Racetrack.

The Geneva Lakefront is a 60-acre multi-use property featuring boat launch and dock areas, lighted trails, and a large gazebo overlooking the lake. The area is popular for hunting, fish-ing, and picnicking. Concerts by the Lake is sponsored by the Recreation Department in July and August.

Seneca Lake State Park offers two excellent marinas with a total of 132 electric slips and 84 non-electric slips. Transient slips are avail-able at both marinas. Through its historic properties, collections, educational programs, collaborations with other organizations, and the Fund for Historic Geneva, the Historical Society preserves the city’s past and cultivates an appreciation for its history. The society’s collections encompass 1,300 cubic feet of archives and 30,000 photos, as well as furniture, decorative art, costumes, textiles, fine art, tools, and equipment. Geneva’s Changing Landscapes, a permanent exhibit, explores the changing relationship of the city with its natural and built environments. The retrospective on the city’s history is designed to inspire visitors and help residents better understand their com-munity’s origins.

Built in 1829 by Charles Butler, a Geneva attorney, this Federal-style home features beauti-fully decorated period rooms, costume displays, and changing exhibits on Geneva’s history and culture. Phineas Prouty, a local merchant, bought the home in 1842 and it remained in the Prouty family for 60 years. Extensive alterations were made between 1858 and 1883, and Beverly Chew purchased it in 1921. In 1960 Mr. and Mrs. Chew arranged for the home to go to the Geneva Historical Society. The historic house features a gift shop, Geneva Historical Society offices, collections storage, program space, and the archives and library, which are open to researchers, genealogists, and the public. The adjacent Hucker Gallery showcases large exhibits and is used for lectures and children’s activities.

Considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States, this National Historic Landmark was built in

1839 and underwent an extensive restoration from 1965–1968 through the generosity of Waldo Hutchins Jr., whose mother, Agnes Swan Hutchins, grew up in the house. Twenty rooms have been restored and furnished in the Empire style, and many of the furnishings belonged to the Swan family. Guests may also view fam-ily letters, diaries, and photographs that detail what life was like on the 19th century farm and estate. The Smith Center for the Arts is both an entertainment venue and a force in promoting the arts in the Finger Lakes. The historic Smith Opera House in the heart of downtown Geneva features the largest indoor silver screen in the region and state-of-the-art digital projection. Other entertainment includes live performances of music, dance, and theater, as well as a variety of speakers. The theater also hosts performances by local groups, including the Geneva Concerts and Geneva Theatre Guild, as well as Hobart & William Smith Colleges. Seating 1,434 people and occupied nearly 250 nights a year, the beau-tifully restored theater also offers a downstairs cabaret serving wines from local vineyards.

Heron Hill Winery was honored as having one of the world’s most spectacular wine tasting rooms by Travel and Leisure maga-zine, while Sharing Travel Experiences voted McGregor Vineyard one of the world’s most beautiful vineyards. Keuka Spring Vineyards’ 2008 Gewürztraminer was judged “Best White Wine” in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of American wines in the world, in which wine experts judged 4,913 American wines. The 35 member wineries surrounding Seneca Lake are known for world-class wines made from native grapes, hybrids, and more delicate varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. The holiday-themed Deck The Halls weekend, held over two different weekends in December, rewards ticket holders with handmade grapevine wreaths, a variety of tempting food and wine pairings at each winery, and a chance to win prizes.
