I.B. Learning Outcomes B11- With reference to relevant research

studies, to what extent does genetic inheritance influence behavior?

I can explain how much our genes impact our behavior.

Page 3: Genetics pp

Warm-Up Questions What behaviors run in your family? Do

you think these are attributed to genetics or your environment? Give specific examples.

Genetics The Study of how genes impact the

characteristics of animals and plants.

Inheritance Each offspring inherits traits from their

parents. 46 Chromosomes – 23 from Ma, 23 from

Pa

Traits Our genes determine our physical and

psychological traits. Physical Traits: Eye Color, Nose Shape,

Height Disorders: Sickle Cell Anemia,

Hutchington Disease Behaviors/Psychological Traits?

Minnesota Twin Study:Bouchard et al. (1990) With a partner, you will read through the

article. As you read, work to identify the aim, method, findings, and conclusions.

Pay special attention to the question of “How much do our genes impact our behavior?” (Intelligence)

Minnesota Twin Study:Bouchard et al. (1990) What is your response to the idea that

our genes can impact our behavior? What does this say about you?

Do you find these results to be surprising? Why or why not?

Critiques of research? Limitations? Ethical concerns?

I’m Not a Look Alike!

Segal (2012) Aim: To investigate if similar physical

features impact the personality traits of humans.

Method: Sent various tests and personality surveys

to subjects from Brunelle’s Art Exhibit. Stability, openness, extroversion,

agreeableness, and conscientiousness

Page 13: Genetics pp

Segal (2012) Continued Findings: Unrelated look-alikes showed

little similarities in self-esteem or personality.

Conclusions: Physical features do not predict psychological traits.
