Session Description
This session is about using and developing senses. We use tasks and games to helpparticipants learn team work and communication. Once we feel that the communication isadequate we blindfold them and play games. Games included: Bat and Moth, Battleships,

Session Plan
Duration: 1hr 30mins
Safety Make sure participants are comfortable being blindfolded
Check the area that we are going to use during the blind trail for hazards
Ensure activities don't overlap with other activities
It is important for the instructor to maintain good group communication and
leadership as participants are blindfolded and are relying on your judgement.
Intro Introduce the 5 senses: Sight / Touch / Hearing / Smell / Taste.
Explain that the sense of sight will be taken away.
sk the group what things they will need to do to make things easier
while blindfolded.
This should bring up communication, co-operation and will show theimportant of other senses and how the senses are heightened when one istaken away.
Content The different activities you do before the blind trail course should develop theircommunication and co-operation skills.
Run activities and games which make the group consider their senses.
Towards the end of the session, lead the group to the blind trail course. Form
thegroup into a straight line with one hand on the shoulder of the person in front.
While walking them to the course get them working together bycommunicatingwhat direction they are turning.
Get the leader to listen to you clapping; the group should follow your claps as
youwalk.
Take group over rough ground, up and down slopes.
Swap leaders and trailers around and mix up order of line.
When you arrive at the course get every member of the group to take their
handsoff the persons shoulder and put it onto the blind trail rope. (It is important thatthey

do not let go of this rope through out the course.)
As a group they must now communicate and co-operate though the different
obstacles on the blind trail course.
Control the group by keeping them close together. If they spread out too
much
control the speed of the first person to let the rest catch up. At the end of the course get their hands back on the persons shoulder and
takethem to a place where you can review the session. The review should includequestions on what the group have learned and how they achieved their goals.(good communication, listening and teamwork usually)
Games Object identification Get the group to sit in a circle and explain to them
that theyare going to be blind folded and the instructor is going to pass objects aroundthecircle. The group must pass the objects on and remember what order theyreceivedthem in. Remember to emphasise to the group not to shout out the objectsoncethey know what it is. Once the instructor as passed all the objects around thecircle, get the group to tell them what objects they received from the first one to thelast
one. Sheep and Sheepdogs Get the group into pairs, one of them is going to
be thesheep and the other the sheepdog. Get the pair to come up with a way ofdirectingthe sheep into a pen (a square area coned out) without using directions. (E.g.claponce for forward, twice for right, three times for left and whistle for stop). Thenblindfold the sheep and move them into an open area away from the pen. Thenonce all the teams are ready let them begin.

Straight-line challenge - put the group in a straight line, arm width apartall facingtowards you. Explain to the group that when they are blindfolded you will givethem6 simple instructions that they need to do. In theory they should be able to stayin astraight-line while doing these instructions. (Give them instructions like take 4pacesto the left. Spin around 3 times.) Discuss with the group why it is hard to stayin astraight-line without the use of their sight.
Animal Farm - Give each participant and animal that they need to make the
noiseof (make sure you give the same animal to at least 2 people). Then space each

participant around the open space you are using. When you say go theparticipants must make the sound of their animal and listen for the othersounds. Each member of the group should have a partner making the same sound.
They
need to find each other by listening for their own sounds. Bat, Moth - Get to group into a circle shoulder arm width apart. 2 members
comeinto the circle 1 is blindfolded and they are the bat. The other person is themoth.
The moth must continually say moth, moth, moth, moth So the bat canhearwhere the moth is. The bat must then try to catch to moth by listening to themothmove around the circle. If the bat is gets too close to the people forming thecirclethey should yell out funky trees so the bat knows to turn around and go the
otherdirection.
Battleships Get the group into pairs and make one of them the captain
and onethe ship. Once in pairs they must come up with a name for the ship. Theparticipantthat is the ship is then blindfolded and placed inside a coned area by theinstructor.
The captains all sit outside the coned area next to each other. The aim of thegame is for the captains to direct their ship towards other ships and destroythem.
The captains do this by having two moves per turn, for example they can asktheirship to move forwards one step and then one step to the right. That would useupthe captains moves. If the captain decides to fire that takes up both moves, theinstructor passes the soft ball to the ship and they throw it underarm in thedirectionthey are facing. If the ball hits another ship without bouncing the ship they hitis outand they go and join another captain that is still in. The winning team is theone with
the most hits. Smell detector - Get each member of the group to take off the left shoe. Tell
themto smell their own shoe. Once this is done place the shoes randomly around theopen space. It is then up to the participant to find their own shoe. If they find ashoethat they think is theirs they should smell it to confirm. Once they get a shoetheythink is theirs they should put it on. When all members of the group have foundtheir shoes get them to take off their blindfolds and have a look if they got itcorrect.

Notes It is important to structure the session in a way that concentrates on thedevelopment of communication and skills. The development of skills throughtheactivities should lead up to using the blind trail course at the end of thesession.
Time keeping is very important in this activity. There needs to be enoughtime to
run activities, the blind trail course and get them clean.
It is not your job to cover the participants in water and mud. It is your
responsibilityto promote the development aims of the activity.
Ask the teacher to chose how muddy the kids get, and respect their decision.
