Generic Norvasc Tablets

Generic Norvasc Tablets (Amlopres) are used to lower high blood pressure (hypertension) and to treat angina pectoris.

Chemical Structure

The active ingredient in Generic Norvasc (Amlopres Tablets) is Amlodipine Besylate (Besilate), which is a calcium channel blocker.

Each 10mg tablet contains amlodipine besylate equivalent to 10 mg amlodipine. Amlopres tablets are also available in strengths of 2.5 mg and 5 mg.

Active Ingredient

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension):High blood pressure results from blood pushing too hard against your blood vessels. Generic Norvasc relaxes your blood vessels, which lets your blood flow more easily and helps lower your blood pressure. Medicines that lower blood pressure lower your risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Indications

Angina Pectoris:Angina, or Angina Pectoris is a pain or discomfort that keeps coming back when part of your heart does not get enough blood and thus a lack of oxygen supply and waste removal. Angina feels like a pressing or squeezing pain, usually in your chest under the breastbone. Sometimes you can feel it in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaws, or back. Generic Norvasc can relieve this pain.

Indications

For both hypertension and angina, the recommended initial dose is 5 mg Generic Norvasc once daily which may be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg depending on the individual patient's response.

Recommended Adult Dosage

Small, fragile, or elderly patients, or patients with hepatic insufficiency may be started on 2.5 mg once daily.

Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Take your medicine at about the same time each day, either morning or evening.

Recommended Adult Dosage

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if you remember when it is less than 12 hours for your next dose, take only your usual dose at your regular time.

Contraindications

Generic Norvasc (Amlopres Tablets) are contraindicated in the following cases:

Known hypersensitivity to amlodipine, dihydropyridines or any inactive ingredients of this medication.

Side Effects of Generic Norvasc

Generic Norvasc may cause the following side effects: Headache, swelling of your legs or ankles, tiredness, extreme sleepiness, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, flushing (hot or warm feeling in your face), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), heart palpitations (very fast heartbeat). It is rare, but when you first start taking Amlopres (Generic Norvasc) or increase your dose, you may have a heart attack or your angina may get worse. If that happens, call your doctor immediately or go directly to a hospital emergency room

Warnings And Precautions

Symptomatic hypotension is possible, particularly in patients with severe aortic stenosis. However, because of the gradual onset of action, acute hypotension is unlikely.

Worsening angina and acute myocardial infarction can develop after starting or increasing the dose of Generic Norvasc, particularly in patients with severe obstructive coronary artery disease.

The dosage of Generic Norvasc has to be titrated slowly when administering calcium channel blockers to patients with severe hepatic impairment.

Overdosage Symptoms

Overdosage might be expected to cause excessive peripheral vasodilatation with marked hypotension and possibly a reflex tachycardia. Dysrhythmias may occur following overdose with any calcium antagonists. Hypotension and bradycardia are usually seen within 1 to 5 hours following overdose. Hypotension can persist for longer than 24 hours despite treatment. Cardiac rhythm disturbances have been noted to persist for up to 7 days.

Overdose Treatment

Active cardiac and respiratory monitoring should be instituted. Frequent blood pressure measurements are essential. Should hypotension occur, cardiovascular support including elevation of the extremities and the judicious administrationof fluids should be initiated. If hypotension remains unresponsive to these conservative measures, administration of vasopressors (such as phenylephrine), should be considered with attention to circulating volume and urine output.

Overdose Treatment

Administration of activated charcoal immediately or up to two hours after ingestion of Generic Norvasc has been shown to significantly decrease amlodipine absorption. Intravenous calcium gluconate may be beneficial in reversing the effects of calcium channel blockade. Dialysis is not likely to be of benefit since amlodipine is highly protein-bound.
