Being Green and Recycling in the Workplace

    A Green Ofce

Purchasing green ofce supplies helps reduce the impact of your business on the

environment and reduces overall resource consumption and waste pollutants. So whypurchase green ofce supplies? Green supplies are often cheaper and more economical.

Standard stationery items are commodities sold purely on price; they are often disposableand have short lives. In contrast, green products tend to have longer lives and are re-usable,offering good cost savings to your business. Some green items, like printer laser cartridges, also offer direct price advantages, because they use recycled components.

A green ofce can create a caring culture in the workplace. Using green products creates a

positive staff culture from a sense that employers are caring and have long term goals. Veryoften the introduction of recycled papers into an ofce has the effect of reducing the amount

of paper consumed, as staff take greater care to save paper.

A greener approach creates more business as an eco-friendly, caring culture and attitudeis also communicated to customers and has a positive impact on gaining new business. Inaddition, being green can help the local economy. The green supplies industry is currentlyvery embryonic and purchasing from green, eco-friendly companies helps to support thesenew industries. Without the support of committed customers, these new industries cannotcreate the markets that allow the development of alternative products and services.

    Benefts

Recycling at work is a great way to increase your business sustainability. Once you start

to recycle at work, youll experience the wide range of benets that come with making yourcompany a more sustainable and environmentally responsible organisation. Here are someof the benets of recycling in the workplace:

A Enhances company image - Engaging in greener business practices and publicising those practices can do wonders for your companys image and can attract both more effective employees and customers.B Recycling is easy to do - Recycling at work is straightforward and easy to do. Its easy to separate out materials to recycle from your other waste, if you get a good system in place, its easy to implement and maintain.C Recycling increases customer loyalty - Customers prefer to do business with companies that behave in an environmentally-friendly way.D Recycling saves space and can reduce clutter - Recycling often reduces clutter and improves the workplace. Less clutter also means better safety around your workplace.E Recycling is great for the environment - Recycling at work helps you reduce the environmental impact of your business. Recycling your waste materials means they can be used again in new products and applications, instead of simply going to landll

where they generate harmful greenhouse gas emissions.F Increases employee morale - Employee satisfaction is the best reason to undertake a recycling scheme. Employees nd pride in working for a company that embodies

environmental values and focuses attention on its environmental impact and

responsibilities.G Recycling is cost effective - Recycling is a cost effective method of dealing with your waste, simply because it is often cheaper when compared with general waste management and disposal.

    16/22

    Having a Successful Job Interview

    Before the Interview

It is important to nd out as much as possible about the company and the particular job being

applied for. The type of information you should try to get hold of includes: Where are thecompanys headquarters located? What service it provides or what its product are? How many

employees do they have? What is the companys recent prot history? Who is their mainbusiness market? Who are their main competitors?

Make sure you know where the interview is being held and how to get there. Allow plenty oftime for hold ups such as a trafc jam. Most people do not like to be kept waiting and it creates

a bad impression if you do not turn up on time. If you are unavoidably late, try to telephoneand let the company know that you will be late and why you have been delayed. Its importantto pay attention to personal grooming since appearances do count. Dirty shoes, unkempt hairand grubby clothes can create an unfavourable rst impression which is difcult to overcome.

Be sure you know the name of the person you are about to see and his/her position in the

    organisation.

    During the Interview

If you have the experience and ability to do the job, you must not let your interview let youdown. Even if all the candidates could do the job equally well, some of them will give theimpression that they will be unsuitable. What impression you wish to give is up to yourself.Contrary to what you might think, most interviewers are not trying to trip you up or trap you.He or she merely wishes to be convinced that you are the person for the job. It is up to you toput your abilities, experience and achievements over in a positive way to the interviewer and

to convince him/her that you are the most suitable candidate for the job. Remember: do notswear even mildly, do not interrupt the interviewer, do not interview the interviewer, do notargue with the interviewer, and dont forget to smile.

Do ask about the job. Intelligent questions about the job not only make a good impression, but can provide you with information you need to help you decide whether the post is anappropriate one for you. You can ask about: promotion prospects, training and furthereducation, wages/salary/hours for the position, is a pension scheme available, howperformance in the job is assessed, are staff often transferred to other branches, who wouldyou be working with, who would you report to, what are the main challenges in the job. Atthe end of the interview, thank the interviewer(s) and leave condently. Do not overstay your

    welcome.

    After the Interview

At the end of the interview, you may not be told whether you have got the job. Othercandidates may still have to be interviewed or other people in the rm may have to be

consulted before making a nal decision. However well the interview went, do not assume

that the job is yours until you have an offer in writing. You should continue with your jobsearch until you receive a rm offer. If you have not heard from the employer within a fortnight,

it is reasonable to contact the company to nd out the position. If you are offered the job,

immediately conrm in writing that you accept. Remember, it is not the end of the world if youare unsuccessful. Look on it as a positive learning experience, since the more interviews yougo to, the better your performance will become. Try to be objective; analyse what went wrongand learn by your mistakes.

    SECTION 3 Questions 28 - 40

Read the following passage and answer Questions 28 40.

Bondi Beach The Australian Swimming Paradise

    A

There is clear evidence - in the form of signicant Aboriginal rock carvings in particular -

that Aboriginal people occupied sites in the area now known as Bondi in the period beforeEuropean settlement. An important type of tool was rst found in the region and is still known

as the Bondi point. The indigenous people of the area at the time of European settlement havegenerally been referred to as the Eora. A number of place names within the area of Bondi arebased on words derived from Aboriginal languages of the Sydney region.

    B

Between 1855 and 1877, the land surrounding the beach and the beach itself becameavailable to the public as a picnic ground and amusement resort, which caused frictionbetween landowners there and leisure visitors. It was not until June 9, 1882, that theGovernment acted and Bondi Beach nally became a public beach. With the rst visitors came

the services to cater to them. Places selling food and drink along with places to sleep sprungup. With these came the pollution litter, sewage and other junk that you would expect whenlarge numbers of people congregate, and these problems caused further problems with thepeople who owned the affected land.

    C

In 1884, the rst tramway linked the city of Sydney to the beach. Bondi Council built the rst

surf bathing sheds in about 1903 and by 1929 an average of 60,000 people were visiting thebeach on a summer weekend day. The opening of the pavilion in 1929 attracted an estimatedcrowd of up to 200 000. By the 1930s Bondi was drawing not only local visitors, but alsopeople from elsewhere in Australia and overseas. Advertising at the time referred to BondiBeach as the Playground of the Pacic. More recently, Bondi Beach hosted the beach

volleyball competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics. A temporary 10,000-seat stadium,a much smaller stadium, 2 warm-up courts, and 3 training courts were set up to host thetournament. In addition to many other activities, the Bondi Beach Market is open every Sunday.

    D

Australia has become the worlds most powerful force in surng and Bondi is one of Australias

most famous surf beaches. A land once ruled by its aboriginal population and seen as a havenfor criminals and pirates, the continent is perfectly suited for wave riding as its location placesit square in the path of the planets most powerful and consistent surf energy. Along with thedigger and the bushman, the surf lifesaver holds a revered place in Australias cultural imagery. The lifesaver grew to become an accepted feature of the beach and a symbol of what wasseen to be good about being Australian.

    E

The increasing popularity of sea bathing during the late 1800s and early 1900s raised ieltshelpnow.comGeneral Training Test 12; Page 17

concerns about public safety and how to prevent people from drowning. In response, theworlds rst formally documented surf lifesaving club, the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club,

was formed in 1907. Surf patrol members wearing their distinctive red and yellow quarteredcaps rst appeared at Bondi that summer. From Bondi, the surf lifesaving movement spread

initially through New South Wales and then to the rest of Australia and the world. With thereassuring presence of surf lifesavers on duty, beaches became places of exhilaratingswimming and surng rather than potential tragedy. Today, Surf Life Saving Australia is one of

the largest and most successful nationwide associations of volunteers dedicated to protectingthe safety of beach goers. Surf lifesavers have rescued over 520,000 people in the 80 yearssince records have been kept.

    F

Lifeguards are the boys in blue caps on Bondi Beach who patrol 365 days a year. The35 Lifeguards are paid professionals employed by Bondi Council. They have ultimateresponsibility for beach safety on Bondi and perform the majority of rescues. Bondis volunteerLifesavers wear the traditional red and yellow caps. The Surf Life Saving Association

Since 1937, not one person has died from a shark attack at Bondi. However, there are stillregular shark sightings at Bondi. Swimmers are alerted to the presence of sharks when theyare detected, but the rst line of defense for many decades has been shark nets. Shark nets

are simply a straight, rectangular piece of net suspended in the water between buoys. Theyare anchored at either end, usually about 200 metres from shore, in about 10 metres of water. Most shark nets stretch about 200 metres along the beach and down to a depth of 6 metres.Floats at the top and sinkers at the bottom keep the net upright in the water. The mesh holesare 50cm wide; small enough to entangle sharks, and other large marine species, but bigenough to leave smaller sh alone. The nets, however, are not intended to form a complete

barrier, and sharks can still get through. The nets act as a deterrent by interrupting theterritorial swimming patterns of sharks. In a typical 20km stretch of coastal surf beach, a stripof net will be set up every couple of kilometres along the beach.
