Battle ofMonmouth Ride

Battle ofMonmouth RideIf cycling up hills is not your cup of tea, consider theBattle of Monmouth Tour, a pleasant 28.5-mile circuitride through the gently rolling countryside of MonmouthCounty. Your route connects two major recreationalfacilities — Monmouth Battlefield State Park on thesouthern end of the loop and Holmdel County Park inthe north. You can start your tour from either location.

Along the way you’ll pass acres of orchards, beautifullymanicured horse farms, woodlands, suburban developments and historic sites. Some of these includeMolly Pitcher’s Well and the Battle of MonmouthMonument. You’ll skirt Freehold, the Monmouth Countyseat that offers a bustling downtown area with lots ofplaces to stop and eat.

And here’s a little fact you may not have known!Monmouth Battlefield State Park (off Route 33), is thesite of one of the longest and largest battles of theRevolutionary War, where Washington’s troops clashedwith British troops under Sir Henry Clinton. An annualreenactment of the June 28, 1778 battle is held everyyear with authentically dressed troops camped out inthe park and situated in the fields for fighting. For anentire weekend, the park is inhabited by men, women

If time isn’t on your side or you prefer not to do the fullloop, it’s easy to abbreviate your tour. Just take SchoolRoad, which bisects the circuit north of Route 18 andyou’ll find a perfect shortcut from either direction.
