Theoretically, an ideal antenna test
environment should provide a plane wave
testing area without reflection, within this
area, the radiation performance of the
antenna is measured. So antenna test should
meet far field environment conditions.
However, when the antenna is very large
and the working frequency is ultra high, the
test distance will be hundreds or even
thousands meters long, which becomes
unrealistic to test environment and the cost
will be extremely high. Compact Antenna
Test Range (CATR) employs an optical
technology to transform the spherical wave
to plane wave, so as to create a far field test
environment within limited distance and
ensure the amplitude and phase of
electromagnetic wave in the quiet zone are
consistent. In this way, CATR can be
regarded as a regular far field system which
meets the needs of electrically large antenna
measurement at an affordable cost.
CATR technology has been employed
by Aerospace and Defence industry for
many years, for 5G mmwave antenna/OTA
test, CATR has special benefits, it is
functional, accurate, and DUT adaptable.
The CATR uses a parabolic reflector to
collimate spherical wave emitted by a small
radiation source(feeding source) into a plane
wave, so as to form a plane wave radiation
mmWave CATR Chamber
region(quiet zone) in which the amplitude
and phase distribution is almost ideal,
thereby meeting the requirements of far
field testing.
Compared to the traditional far field
and near field test, CATR limits the plane
wave just within the quite zone and the
reflection from surrounding walls is relative
low, therefore, reduces the requirements for
the chamber. Moreover, the in-door test is
less affected by the environment, so its
efficiency is relative high and can be run
24/7. Meanwhile, CATR covers wide working
frequency band, mmwave and sub-mm
wave tests can be done by just changing the
feed antenna. CATR can be applied to
mmwave equipment/antenna measurement,
and it is one of most effective test methods
in 5G FR2. CATR can also be used in
automotive radar antenna measurement.
A CATR chamber system consists of
reflector, feeding source, anechoic chamber,
low reflection 2D turntable, measurement
instruments and test control software. The
performance of CATR become more
stringent with increasing frequency, the parts’
machining and assembly accuracy, especially
the reflector, demands stricter requirements.
Thus, the overall system performance is
determined by the manufacturing and
assembly of reflector, feeding source etc.

2. High Performance Corrugated Horn
(Feeding Source)
mmWave system has the characteristics of
short wave length, wide band width and high
resolution, so corrugated horns with narrow
beam width and high gain is the most
suitable feed for CATR systems.

RayPact Major Features
1. High Precision Reflector
Compared to lower frequency, mmwave
has higher pathloss, which brings big
challenges to the manufacturing of mmwave
parts. For example, the reflector’s machining
and assembly precision should reach up to
microns level. Reflector becomes the key
part of a CATR chamber, it’s precision will
affect the whole system’s performance.
RayPact series products adopt the high-end
rolled edge reflector, which has high
precision, stable structure, compact size and
excellent performance.
Reflector Specifications
Frequency 20G~100GHz
Reflector size 40x40/60x60/100x100 cm
QZ size Ф20x20/30x30/50x50 cm
QZ shape Cylindrical

4. Innovative mmWave Absorber VPC60
RayPact600 equipped with GTS’s high
performance mmwave absorbers, which
are made with closed cell expanded
polypropylene(EPP). The absorbing agent is
directly fused with the PP resin particles,
then foamed at a high temperature. The
final product is uniform, stable, moisture-
free, dust-free and in-deformable and the
absorbing performance for the anechoic
chamber can be promised. The VPC60 is 6
cm height, its reflection within the whole
working frequency band is less than -40dB.
➢ Electrical performance:EPP has small
dielectric constant, small surface
reflection, uniform material, sufficient
internal attenuation and good absorbing
effect in the microwave frequency band.
➢ Flame retardant :meets UL94 HF-1,
GB8624 B2 standard.
➢ Oxygen index:> 27%
➢ Working temperature : long-term
50~100℃ (short-term 120℃).
➢ Environmental protection : non-toxic
raw material, odor-free, and no harmful
gas released.
➢ Final product:stable in nature, meets
RoHS standard.
➢ Physical performance:on-time molding,
precise size, uniform and customizable
color, stable and in-deformable.
3. Fine-tuning Feed Positioner
The feed positioner is an auxiliary
device for adjusting the feed position to
achieve the precise relative position to the
reflector. This six-axis fine-tuning platform
can make the feed move in X,Y, and Z
direction. At the same time, it can rotate
360° in azimuth and 20 ° in polarization.
Positioner Specifications
Z Adjust Range 10mm
X Adjust Range ±6.5mm
Y Adjust Range ±6.5mm
Adjust Accuracy 0.01mm
Horizontal Rotation Range 360°
Vertical Rotation Range ±20°

RayPact CATR test system consists of a reflector, feed, turntable, shielding chamber and
absorbers, system software and RF links. Among these, the reflector works with the feed to
become the core component of CATR –- the plane wave source. The feed’s position is
precisely located and can be finely tuned. The turn table supports 2D rotation and is able to
do the fully spherical scanning and sampling. The shielding chamber with the high
performance mmwave absorbers provides a closed test environment which is a stable and low
electromagnetic noise. The system software and RF links are necessary for the DUT testing. All
the DUT test results can be obtained from the data sampling, software algorithm processing,
data analysis and finally visual graphic displayed.
3. Active Test (Receiver Performance test, non-signaling)
Major applications: phased array base station, mmwave UE receiver performance test,
such as EIS、ACS、Blocking、Intermodulation etc.
