GENERAL SESSION

Wednesday, October 19Concusion: Trauma in SportsDr. Bennet Omalu

First Doctor to Diagnose Chronic Brain Damage in NFL Athletes

As chronicled in the lm Concussion (starring WillSmith), Dr. Bennet Omalu’s story is one of greattriumph in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.Born in 1968 in Eastern Nigeria during the civil war,his family lived as refugees, his town under constant

re by the Nigerian Air Force. Despite suffering war-related under-nutrition in the rst two years of his life,Omalu would go on to attend medical school at age 15and become a physician by age 21.

In 2002, Dr. Omalu made a career breakthrough whenhe became the rst doctor to discover and identifychronic brain damage as a major factor in the deaths ofsome professional athletes. He called the diseaseChronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). His ndingswere summarily dismissed—and even ridiculed—by his

professional peers, the NFL, and the sports industry. But today, CTE has becomegenerally accepted and Dr. Omalu’s ndings have revolutionized neuroscience, sportsmedicine and safety, the study of all types of brain trauma, and the entire sportsindustry.

“A Launch of Courage”

Captain Mark Kelly and Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

Distinguished public servants and models of dedicationand resilience, Mark Kelly and Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffordsrepresent the very essence of American heroism.

A retired American astronaut and US Navy Captain, Kellyew 39 combat missions over Iraq and Kuwait during therst Gulf War, spent over 50 days in orbit, and served as

the commander of Space Shuttle Endeavour on its nalight.

The youngest woman ever elected to the Arizona StateSenate, Ms. Giffords represented her community in theArizona Legislature from 2000 to 2005, and then inCongress from 2006 to 2012, consistently ranking as oneof the most centrist legislators in Congress.

On January 8, 2011, an assassination attempt at an eventwith constituents in Tucson, AZ, left Giffords severely wounded after being shot in the headat near point blank range. Since then, the couple has inspired individuals around the worldwith their story of hope and courage in the wake of tragedy, serving as a symbol for thepossibility of second chances.

The couple's inspirational memoir, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope topped multiple best-seller lists, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. Throughouttheir careers and since the shooting, the couple has been honored with numerous accolades. In 2015, the US Navy honored Ms. Giffords by naming a ship after her; the USS GabrielleGiffords was chosen as the vessel’s namesake because of the courage that she hasexempli ed.

With a message inspiring courage through tough times and on the way to new goals, and apowerful perspective on harnessing strength from others to persevere, Ms. Giffords and Mr.Kelly will bring AHIMA audiences inside their journey, motivating individuals to overcomeany challenge they face, and to be passionate, courageous and always at their best.
