General Instructions

Dear student

This exercise book helps you to thoroughly understand some sociological topics. You first need to read these topics in the notes “Introduction to Sociology” and then you will be able to understand and answer the questions in this exercise book

Instructions of the lab classes

1. One topic will be discussed every week. Students are requested to prepare for the discussion and to give presentations as explained below.

2. Each student has to fill in his answers before class, and the instructor will check upon them.3. The class will be divided into groups of no more than five students in each group. Each group has

to choose a name by which it can be recognized (e.g. Star). These groups will continue up the end of the semester.

4. Each group has to prepare a short presentation in one elected topic and submit it the next week. Other students are encouraged to commit and raise questions.

5. A copy of the presentation should be given to the instructor.

6. All presentations, during the semester, should be gathered in a CD and submitted to the instructor before the final exam.

Research Writing Standard

1. General Standard1.1. Times New Roman font, font size 12, spacing 1.5, 6 points between paragraphs should be

used, One space should be left before starting a new sub-heading.1.2. Font size should be 16 bold for main headings whereas 14 bold for sub-headings.1.3. Margins should as follows: top 2cm, bottom 2cm, right 2cm, and left, 2.5cm.1.4. Table of contents should be written after the cover page. The electronic Word Table of

Contents should be used.1.5. Referencing should at the end of each sentence/paragraph as follows: (Last name, year: p)1.6. A list of references should written at the end of the document. Up-to date APA version

should be used. This could be obtained from Word References list.1.7. Font color should black unless graphs or data in which colors could be used of illustrations.

Research Design

Each group has to choose one sociological issue from their readings or experiences.

Refer to chapter 2 of the note (Introduction to Sociology) and write a proposal of a research. The proposal must include the followings:

1. The title.2. Short introduction on the chosen issue.3. Statement of the research problem. This includes strong reason(s) for choosing the issue.4. Questions you intend to answer.5. Aims of the research.6. Any limitations for the research, including time, place, and human limitations.7. The research methodology you are going to use to gather and analyze data.8. Main references you are going to use, using the referencing ABA approved by the University of

Nizwa. (Visit the library).9. Visit the library and find out the proper resources for your research.10. You can use other resources such as magazines, newspapers, leaflets, and the internet.

11. Collect data using the proper instrument.12. Write your research using the literature and data you have gathered.13. It is illegal to copy and paste others work as per the regulations of the University. To caught a

text from any resource you must write it in an italic bold font between brackets “ “. However, the most preferable way is to summarize the needed text. In all cases you must write the used reference within the text as follows: (Surname, year, p). List all references alphabetically at the end of the research.
