The University of North Carolina wrestlingteam returns all of its starters from a 2004-05team that earned ACC championship honorsand finished 24th in the NCAA, its best per-formance there since 1997. With four returningindividual ACC champions and one All-America, head coach C.D. Mock and his teamwill look to build on last year's success in the2005-06 campaign.

“I'm very excited about this year,” saidMock. “With all of our guys returning and theaddition of some great wrestlers we should be aforce to reckon with.”

Tar Heel All-America Evan Sola is expectedto lead this year's team as one of three seniors.Sola posted a 36-6 record at 133 pounds in2004-05, including a sixth-place finish at theNCAA Championships, his second career ACCtitle and a first-place finish at the Beast of theEast College Invitational. Entering this seasonhe stands as the highest-ranking wrestler theACC in several wrestling publications.NWCA/Intermat and W.I.N. magazine rankhim as preseason No. 4 at 133, while AmateurWrestling News ranks him fifth.

“Evan's career is a lot like mine,” said Mock,an NCAA individual champion in 1982. “He’ssimilar not only in the way he wrestles, but inhis mindset. I think he understands the type ofcommitment and dedication it takes to be achampion. There’s a lot of luck involved inwinning a national championship, but there'salso hard work, perseverance and skill. On askill level, there’s no question that Evan haswhat it takes to win it all this year.”

Another senior and defending ACC champi-on, Garrett Atkinson, also returns for the TarHeels. Atkinson, a 165-pounder, finished lastseason with strong outings at the ACCs andNCAAs.

Similar to Sola, juniors Drew Forshey andDavid Dashiell, both defending ACCChampions, enter the 2005-06 season with highexpectations. Forshey ranks as the preseasonNo. 10 in W.I.N. Magazine at 125 pounds, while Dashiell is rated No. 13 byNWCA/InterMat at 197 pounds.

Mock expects for this year’s team tohave a lot of competition for starting posi-tions within weight classes. Heading intothe season, almost every weight class hastwo or more wrestlers competing for thestarting job. The classes with the most poten-tial for competition are 125, 141, 165 and 184.

“We’ve got more competition within thisteam than I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” saidMock, in his third year as head coach and sixthyear at Carolina. “This is the kind of competi-tion - within the weight classes - that makesteams better as a whole. Having classes like 125and 184, where we’ve got three very capablewrestlers says a lot about our program thisyear.”

For the second year in a row North Carolinabrings in one of the top recruiting classesin the country. The freshman classincludes two wrestlers, Dennis Druryand Dan Goetter, who ranked in the topten in InterMat’s High School SeniorRankings. Drury and Goetter, bothfrom Pennsylvania, are expected towrestle at 197 and heavyweight, respectively.

Last year’s freshman class should alsoplay a major role this season. SophomoresIsaiah Britton (141), Chris Ramos (149), AlexMaciag (174) and Justin Dobies (184) allaccrued a year’s worth of starting experience intheir freshman season. Britton comes into2005-06 with his sights on an individual ACC

championship after finishing second at theevent last year.

“The jump from freshman to sophomoreyear is a tremendous one,” said Mock. “This iswhere you see the most improvement from oneyear to the next. Guys take major steps in matu-rity and experience on the college level in thatfirst year and that allows them to become muchbetter on the mat. We have a lot of sophomoreson the team right now that have taken thesesteps and improved.”

With the return of assistant coach GlenLanham and the addition of A.J. Grant as a full-time assistant, the Carolina wrestling programwill have two full-time assistants for the firsttime in its history.

“Both of these guys come from nationalchampionship backgrounds,” said Mock.“They’ve been around that atmosphere and theyhelp to show our guys what we need to do to getthere. Having them both as full-time coacheswill really help us this year.”

Virginia Tech is expected to pose the biggestthreat to the Tar Heels again this year. TheHokies defeated the Tar Heels when the teamsmet in dual competition last year, but the TarHeels came out on top at the ACCChampionships. The two teams meet on Feb. 2in what’s expected to be the ACC's most antici-pated match-up.

The Tar Heels will also be challenged at theVirginia Duals, which

always featuressome of the top

teams in thecountry. In

addition,the team

will travel tothe TexasLonestar Duals forthe first time to face afew less-familiar opponentsincluding Wisconsin, Stanford, and Northern Colorado.

“I expect for us to be one of the top teams inthe country this year,” said Mock. “We obvi-ously want to win another ACC Championship. Then, I think we have all the pieces for whatcould amount to a finish in the top 10 atNCAAs.”

125 POUNDSNorth Carolina returns two of its most expe-

rienced wrestlers at 125 pounds with juniorDrew Forshey and redshirt junior Bobby Shaw.Redshirt freshman Jared Royer, a two-timePennsylvania state champion, will add depth tothe weight class in his first year of competition.Forshey, ranked as the preseason No. 10 in hisweight class by W.I.N. Magazine, returns as thedefending ACC champion at 125 pounds. Hewent 21-9 last season, including a strong outingat NCAA Championships. Shaw, who went 20-12 last year, brings a lot of experience to theweight class with 81 matches under his beltheading into 2005-06.

“Drew and Bobby battled it out last year, andthey'll compete again this year,” said Mock.“That competition will make this a strongweight class.”

133 POUNDSComing off of an ACC Championship and a

sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships,Tar Heel All-America Evan Sola has set hissights on a national championship in 2006.Sola finished last season with a 36-6 record andcomes into 2005-06 ranked fourth nationally. After earning last year's ACC Wrestler of theYear for the second time in his career, Solaenters the season as the conference’s highestranked wrestler in any weight class.

“For Evan, the sky is the limit,” said Mock.“On a skill level there's no question that he haswhat it takes to win it all this year and I think he

would be disappointed with anything less.”

141 POUNDSSophomore Isaiah Britton and redshirt fresh-

man Vincent Ramirez will compete for thestarting spot at 141 pounds. Britton returns afteran impressive freshman season that included afirst place finish at the Missouri Open, fifthplace at the Beast of the East CollegeInvitational, and a second place finish at theACC Championships. He finished the seasonwith a 25-15 record. Mock expects Ramirez, anative of Durham, N.C., to challenge Britton forthe starting position.

“We’re lucky to have Vincent in our programas a guy from our back yard,” said Mock. “Ithink he slipped under the radar and has poten-tial to be a very good wrestler.”

149 POUNDSMock expects for sophomore Chris Ramos

to have a breakout year at 149 pounds. Ramos, who posted a 15-14 record last season, lost inovertime at last year's ACC Championships toeventual champion Tyde Prader of VirginiaTech. He went on to capture third in the ACC.

“Chris is a guy who has recently come intohis own,” said Mock. “I think he can be an All-America this year if he puts it all together.”

Junior Matt Starkey, of Charlotte, N.C., willalso wrestle at 149 for the Tar Heels.

157 POUNDSBrian Baglio, a redshirt junior from York

Haven, Pa., returns for the Tar Heels at 157pounds. Philip Ramirez, the older brother of TarHeel wrestler Vincent Ramirez, is also slated towrestle at 157, but will most likely miss the sea-son due to shoulder surgery. Baglio enters theseason in a new weight class for the third timesince he arrived at Carolina.

“Brian is a guy who has seen tremendousgrowth in his body since he's come to school,”said Mock. “He's had to adjust and learn how touse his bigger body each year and it may takesome time before he's completely adjusted.”

165 POUNDSDefending ACC champion Garrett Atkinson

returns as the favorite to start at 165 pounds. He finished last season with an 18-22 record, including a strong performance at the NCAAChampionships. Deon Barrett, a junior transferfrom the Naval Academy, could challengeAtkinson for the starting spot at 165.According to Mock, whoever loses in the chal-lenge matches between Barrett and Atkinsonwill drop down to wrestle at 157 pounds. JakePuckett will also wrestle at 165 pounds.

174 POUNDSSophomore Alex Maciag returns at 174

pounds after a strong freshman campaign thatincluded a first place finish at the Irwin-Carolina Open. He went 17-17 last season.

“Once Alex gets more experience and gets alittle wiser, he's another guy where the sky isthe limit,” said Mock.

Tim Barbis, a junior transfer from Oregon, will also wrestle at 174.

184 POUNDSAccording to Mock, the 184-pound weight

class could have any one of three wrestlers asthe starter this year. Sophomore Justin Dobies, redshirt freshman Daniel Llamas and freshmanRobert McCarthy will all contend for the start-ing position. Dobies finished last season with a17-20 record. As one of the most highly-recruit-ed wrestlers in his weight class, McCarthy isexpected to challenge each of his older team-mates for the starting position.

“This is another weight class were the com-petition could get intense,” said Mock. “Iexpect that Robert McCarthy will push theseolder guys to another level.”

197 POUNDSMock expects for redshirt junior David

Dashiell to earn his first All-America honorsafter last season, in which he claimed the ACCChampionship at 197 pounds. InterMat/NCWAranks Dashiell at No. 13 in his class. The addi-tion of freshman Dennis Drury, a national prepfinalist in 2005, adds depth to 197.

“David should have a great season,” saidMock. “But I expect for Dennis to be right at hisheels the whole way.”

HEAVYWEIGHTMock expressed a special excitement about

Spencer Nadolsky as he enters the 2005-06 sea-son saying, “I’m excited about Spencer becausehis focus is 100 percent wrestling this year.”Nadolsky played for the varsity football team in2004 and decided to give all of his devotion towrestling in 2005-06. He finished last seasonwith 28-15 record, placing third at the ACCChampionships.

Dan Goetter, a freshman out of Perkasie, Pa.,will also wrestle at heavyweight. According toMock, Goetter will be expected to put on 15-20pounds as the season progresses.

The Carolina coaching staff has assembled yet another impressive crop of newcomers forthe 2005-06 season. Front: Chase Carter. Second Row (L-R): Ricky Jackson, Deon Barrett,Philip Ramirez, Dan Carleton. Back Row: Dan Goetter, Hardwick Caldwell, Robert McCarthy,Dennis Drury, Scott Russell, Travis Huddleston.

THE NEED FOR THE CAROLINA WRESTLING ENDOWMENT PROJECT:

1. TITLE IXAnyone even remotely interested in amateur wrestling in the United

States is by this time well aware of the perilous condition of the sport inrecent years. In 1985, there were over 300 NCAA Division I wrestlingprograms in universities throughout America. There are currently lessthan 85! This decline is of great concern, particularly since - during thesame period of time - wrestling at the high school level continues to beone of the fastest growing sports.

The sport of amateur wrestling is particularly vulnerable here in theSoutheast. The unfortunate and unintended consequences of this legisla-tion have far too often been to “drop” non-revenue sports. Wrestling, having no “sister,” has often been the first to go.

For the first time in the history of UNC, we have been given, throughthe Carolina First Campaign, the opportunity to protect and ensure thefuture of wrestling at Carolina.

2. BILL LAM’S LEGACYIn announcing his retirement after 30 years as the head coach of

Carolina wrestling team, Bill Lam desires to leave the program with afool-proof plan for longevity. He proposed years ago that when he left theprogram it would be on the way to being endowed. It is no coincidencethat this is all happening at this time.

3. SEPARATE “ENDOWMENT ACCOUNT”The Endowment Account should not be confused with The

Heavyweight Club. The Heavyweight Club account exists for the pur-pose of supplementing the budgeted expenses for Carolina wrestling. This source helps send younger, less experienced wrestlers to variousopen tournaments throughout the year and pays for alumni events or par-ent gatherings. The Endowment Account will be managed through theEducational Foundation at Carolina and only the interest will be used tofinance the cost of Carolina’s wrestling budget. Contributions are tax-deductible and cannot be dispersed for any other reason.

4. ENABLE THE PROGRAM TO GO TO THE NEXT LEVELSuccessful completion of the goal of the Endowment Fund will pro-

vide an increase in the operating budget of Carolina wrestling, makingit consistent with the operating budgets of comparable schools through-out the country that have been consistently competitive at the Division Ilevel.

At the college level, the club also serves many important functions thatwould not be possible without it:

• It provides an outlet for individuals who do not make the UNC teamto continue training with the hope of perhaps being able to make the teamin the future.

• It allows for wrestlers from around the country who may be trainingfor the Olympics or World Team to come train with our wrestlers inChapel Hill.

• It provides the opportunity for UNC wrestlers to train, travel, andcompete internationally, gaining valuable experience to enhance theirtalents.

• The club will enable the UNC wrestlers and staff to travel each springto the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to train withOlympic-level athletes and coaches. This is an invaluable experiencewhich has helped the team immeasurably in the past.

• The club provides UNC wrestlers with additional coaches and work-out partners outside of regular practice times for their enhancement.

The Carolina Wrestling Club and The Heavyweight Club are crucialorganizations to our program and the community. We deeply appreciateour club members and our donors. There are various levels of club mem-bership and we take this time to recognize and thank our donors.

Department of Athletics Mission StatementThe Department of Athletics has offered high quality athletic programs for

many years. Through a dedicated commitment to educational interests, competi-tive athletic programs, and integrity in all areas, the student-athletes, coaches andstaff strive to bring credit and recognition to the University.

The mission of the Department is to sponsor a broad-based athletic programthat provides educational and athletic opportunities for young men and women togrow and develop, and to serve the interests of the University by complementingand enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Coaches, as educators, are founda-tional to this process. In keeping with the University’s efforts to offer programs ofregional and national acclaim, the Department’s athletic programs strive for com-petitive excellence within the Atlantic Coast Conference or other similar institu-tions. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite students, facul-ty, staff and alumni in a common and shared experience. The Department seeks tocontribute to the diversity of the University by offering opportunities for enhancedracial/ethnic, cultural and geographic representation.

To fulfill this mission, the Department, with the approval of the Board ofTrust, has developed principles of operation to provide guidance and direction toits personnel. This Mission Statement and accompanying principles require strongdedication and commitment from all who participate in, coach in and support theDepartment of Athletics.

Department of Athletics Statement on Gambling

The mission of the Department of Athletics is to sponsor a broad-based athlet-ic program that provides educational and athletic opportunities for young men andwomen to grow and develop. In keeping with the Department's mission and theUniversity's commitment to educational interests, competitive athletic programs, and integrity in all areas, the Department of Athletics strongly condemns the influ-ence of gambling on intercollegiate athletics.

Student gambling is a significant issue on college campuses. Student-athleteinvolvement in gambling has produced many tragic situations, both for student-athletes and the universities they represent. Student-athletes often compete in con-tests that generate interest from those involved in gambling and, possibly, organ-ized crime. If given the opportunity, those interests will not hesitate to exploit theposition student-athletes hold on college campuses. As such, the University ofNorth Carolina is firmly opposed to all forms of gambling and bribery related tointercollegiate athletics.

To fulfill its educational obligation, the Department provides a gambling edu-cation program to all its student-athletes and departmental staff members. Thisstatement and the educational program are reflections of the Department's com-mitment to keeping intercollegiate athletics free from the influences of gamblingand its related activities.

The Department requires its staff members and student-athletes to adhere toNCAA, state and federal laws regarding gambling. In the interest of fair competi-

tion and the growth and development of student-athletes, the Department stronglyurges its friends and supporters to refrain from gambling/betting on contestsinvolving collegiate competition and to abide by state and federal laws.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SERVICES: CAROLINA WRESTLING

2005-06 CAROLINA WRESTLING MEDIA GUIDE: PAGE 11

Student-Athlete Services at the University of North Carolina encompasses threeareas that play an integral part in the collegiate experience of every UNC student-athlete. Those three areas are Academic Development, Student-AthleteDevelopment and Leadership Development.

ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT The Academic Support Program is the main

service utilized in advancing UNC student-ath-letes to graduation. The program assists stu-dent-athletes in exploring their interests andabilities, enjoying a broad educational experi-ence, and reaching or exceeding their academicgoals. “Our young people are students first andathletes second and that will always be the caseat the University,” says UNC Director ofAthletics Dick Baddour. “That is a credit to ourcoaches, administrators and support staff, butmost of all, our student-athletes. Their accom-plishments in the classroom are very impres-sive.”

During the 2004-05 academic year, 297Carolina student-athletes made the ACCAcademic Honor Roll, which requires a cumu-lative GPA of at least 3.0 for the year. In the fallof 2004, 176 student-athletes made the Dean'sList, and 163 did so in the spring of 2005.

The Academic Support Program is housedprimarily in the Pope Academic SupportCenter, which is equipped with study facilities,

tutorial rooms, a computer lab, a 128-seat auditorium, counselors’ offices, andstate-of-the-art video and computer equipment. At the center, students meet withstaff to discuss course selection, major and career exploration, academic progressand academic eligibility.

The Academic Support Program helps freshmen transition from high school tocollege through a variety of academic programs such as academic counseling, indi-vidual tutoring, group review sessions and supplemental instruction.

A member of each team serves as the Academic Team Captain, providing astrong link between the Academic Support Program and the other student-athleteson the squad. The Academic Team Captain for wrestling for 2005-06 is Evan Sola.

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT Building character in UNC student-athletes is the main charge of Student-Athlete

Development. Through Carolina Outreach, Tar Heels are involved in a variety of projects and

organizations on campus and in the community. The UNC Department of Athleticshas partnered with Gatorade and the UNC School of Public Health for a nationalpilot program called Get Kids in Action, in which Tar Heel student-athletes visitlocal elementary schools to encourage children to exercise. The Carolina Dreamsprogram allows young patients at UNC Children's Hospitals to attend Tar Heelsporting events with UNC student-athletes. Other recent activities have includedbuilding a house with Habitat for Humanity, cooking meals at Ronald McDonaldHouse and cleaning up the roadways through the Adopt-a-Highway program.

Student-Athlete Development also seeks to develop student-athletes on a per-sonal level through a variety of speakers who address issues like nutrition, gam-bling, relationship communication and substance use. Career Development helpsUNC student-athletes look beyond college with resources such as career counsel-ing and workshops on resume writing and interviewing skills.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTThe primary outlet for Leadership Development is the Carolina Leadership

Academy, started at UNC in 2004. As the nation's premier leadership developmentprogram in collegiate athletics, the Carolina Leadership Academy develops, chal-lenges and supports student-athletes, coaches and staff in their continual quest tobecome world class leaders in athletics, academics and life.

The Academy consists of three programs:CREED ProgramLeadership training begins in the freshman year. All leadership begins with per-

sonal leadership, therefore freshmen are taught skills to effectively lead them-

selves. Training consists of monthly meetings featuring keynote speakers and smallgroup discussion. Upperclass student-athletes serve as peer mentors and discussionleaders. Special focus is on responsibility, accountability, making good choices, ethics and character building.

Rising Stars ProgramDesigned for a select group of “high potential” sophomores and juniors, the pro-

gram provides future leaders with insights, strategies and skills necessary tobecome effective leaders. The program includes monthly meetings, interactiveexercises and action learning experiences.

Veteran Leaders ProgramThis program is designed for team captains and veteran student-athletes. It pro-

vides advanced leadership training and support, teaches the critical skills andinsights necessary to be effective vocal leaders and provides a strong peer network.Student-athletes meet regularly to learn and reinforce leadership principles andshare successes, frustrations and lessons.
