Justification

There. are two changes being made in the SA curriculum in Communication Disorders. The first is

a change in requirement of one particular COMD class to another COMO class and the second involves

removal of a requirement to attain a "(" grade in a set of required courses.

Change Requirement for COMD 4590

We are dropping the requirement of COMD 4590 Auditory Rehabilitation in Children and requiring

COMO 4383 Fluency Disorders in its place. COMD 4590 covered knowledge and skills t at students used

in masters programs in both audiology and speech-language pathology. However, masters programs in

audiology were phased out around the country and the current doctoral programs in audiology teach

this content in their programs. The scope of practice of speech-language pathologists has changed such

that the professional activities that are the content of this course no longer apply to speech-language

pathologists. In its place we are requiring COMD 4383 Fluency Disorders because it covers content that

is still necessary for graduates who will be enrolling in graduate programs in speech-language pathology.

Removal of "C" Grade Requirement

The curriculum currently requires that students attain "(" grades in a group of courses including COMO

4380,4381,4382, and 4590. These courses cover informatjon that is important to diagnosis of and

intervention for communication disorders. This requirement was put in place at a time when the

majority of undergraduate students completed clinical practica and needed to understand the

information well enough to actually use it in practice. Few of our undergraduates now complete clinical

practica. The ones who do are typically chosen because of their excellent grades in these classes. The

current requirement has caused some problems in which students did not attain "c" grades and were

removed from the graduation list just before graduation. Rather than repeat this scenario, the faculty

voted to remove the "(" grade requirement.

Specific Changes Made

Strikeouts in the Current Curriculum

"(" or better in COMO 4380 removed from the Semester 5 Critical Requirements. tiC' or better

requirement removed from the paragraph describing the curriculum. Both of these changes are related

to removing the "C" grade requirement.

"COMO 4590 Auditory Rehabilitation in C ildren" was removed from paragraph listing the required

courses. It was also removed from the Semester 7 listing of classes.

Additions to the Proposed Curriculum

COMO 4383 Basic Fluency Disorders is added to the listing of required courses and to the listing for

Semester 7. In both slots it replaces COMO 4590.

Justification Changes in Undergraduate Curriculum Department of Political Science April 15, 2015

The proposed changes to the Political Science u dergraduate curriculum entail the creation of nine (9) available substantive concentrations that we feel offer more interesting and policy-relevant course clusters to our students. Additionally, it is our view that the proposed curriculum better links our majors to the awaiting marketplace in society, thereby making Political Science a more desirable major in the eyes of students (and their parents).

These proposed curricular changes were prompted by the department's recent external program review, which recommended a thorough review of new curricular options for our undergraduate students. The department embraced this challenge and created for fall 2014 semester a special Ad Hoc Committee on Curriculum Reform, he charge of which was to consider the recommendations of the

external review and to extend that mandate by considering an even wider range of changes to the department's curriculum. The necessary individual course changes (the dropping of two courses, and

the adding of eight new courses) for this larger reform of he POll curriculum have already been approved and implemented during AY 2014-2015. These greater current proposed curriculum changes constitute the second phase of the reform we have been encouraged to take by the Action Plan that emerged from the program review process.

Admission to the SA in Political Science curriculum requires that a student be admissible to the College of Humanities & Social Sciences: 24 earned semester hours with a cumulative and LSU GPA of at least 2.0; "C" or better in ENGL 1001; and three hours of the General Education Analytical Reasoning requirement

Political science majors must complete at least 33 semester hours in POLl courses, of which at least 18 hours must be at or above the 3000-level. Field aistrisytioR requirements are descnbed below in footnote 3. Students may declare one or two concentrations within the major: a concentration consists of four courses. There are nine ifferent concentrations: four concentrations consisting of four courses in the fields described in footnote 3 below, and five concentrations which have bee n designed by the department: (1) law & legal systems; (2) campaigns & elections; (3) race and politics; (4) political analysis; and (5) public policy. Justification

P rsuant to external program review and a mandated Action Plan from LSU's Office of Academic Affairs, the department of Political Science during fall 2014 semester executed a thoroughgoing review of its curriculum. As a result, and upon the recommendation of an Ad Hoc Committee on Curriculu Reform, the department unanimously approved a series of changes in the requirements for its majors. Specifically, the department approved the creation of nine conce trations, represe ti g the department's traditional four subfields (American Government & Politics, Comparative Government & Politics, International Politics & Law, and Political Theory) and five new thematic fields (Law & Legal System, Campaigns & Elections, Race & Politics, Political Analysis, and Public olicy). As proposed, POll majors will have to option to declare no concentration (thereby taking the default curriculum), one concen ratio fro a 0 9 the nine, or two concentrations from among the nine. Each concentration requires the taking of four designated courses from among a list of courses deemed germane to that concentration.

The current concentration - Political Theory - requires students to take four courses from those listed below:

Justification

Pursuant to external program review and a mandated Action Plan from LSU's Office of Academic Affairs, the department of Political Science during fall 2014 semester executed a thoroughgoing review of its curriculum. As a result, and upon the recommendation of an Ad Hoc Committee on Curriculum Reform, the department unanimously approved a series of changes in the requirements for its majors. Specifically the department approved the creation of nine concentrations, representing the department's traditional four subfields (American Government & Politics, Comparative Government & Politics, International Politics & Law, and Political Theory) and five new thematic fields (Law & Legal Syste s, Campaigns & Elections, Race & Politics, Political Analysis, a d Public Policy). As proposed, POU majors will have to option to declare no concentration (thereby taking the default curriculum), one concentration from among the nine, or two concentrations from among the nine. Each concentration requires the taking of four designated courses from among a list of courses deemed germane to that concentration.

The current concentration - Public Policy - requires students to take fOUf courses from those listed below:

Political Science


Admission to the BA in Political Science curriculum requires that a student be admissible to the College of Humanities &Sooal Sciences: 24 earned semester hours with a cumulative and LSU GPA of atleast 2.0; "C· or better in ENGL 1001; and three hours of the General Education Analytical Reasoning requirement

Political science majors must complete tie st 33 semester hours in POll courses, of which at least 18 hours must be at or above the 3000-level. Field requirements are described below in footnote 3. Students may declare one or two concentra 'ons within the major; a concentration consists of four courses. There are nine different concentrations: fOUT concentrations consisting of four courses in the fields described in footnote 3 below, and five concentrations whkh have been designed by the department: (1) law & legal systems; (2) campaigns & elections; (3) race and politics; (4) political analysis; and (5) public policy. Only one non-POLl course may count towards a concentration. Students may complete the major withoutdesignatiIlg a concentration.

You may reca'll from a previous e-mail exchange back in January that we in POll are engaged in a change of our undergraduate curriculum (creating a series of concentrations, etc.). Two of those concentrations involve asking our majors in that concentration to take 12 credit hours from a list of courses, some of which are non-POll courses (e.g., fnom HIST, SOCL, and ENGL). In these two cases listed below, we've hoped that we could get your permission to list MC courses as options for POL majors in e two concentrations. They would not be required to take the MC courses in question, but we thought that the course content in the couTiSes made sense for the substantive focus of the concentrations. Here are the two concentrations and the two MC co rses in

each that we would accept as part of the 12-credit hour requirement for the concentration (if, indeed, students opted to take those MC courses). Also of note: our POll majors in these concentrations will be permitted to take only 1 non-POL course as part of the 4-course requirement for the concentration, so no POll major in hese two concentrations could take any more than one of the two MC courses). Finally, because the students in these POll concentrations have plenty of other options to satisfy the requiremen s for the concentrations, there would be no additional pressure on any unit to offer any courses that they would not otherwise offer

on their own.

Admission to the BA in Political Science curriculum requires that a stud nt be admissible to the College of Humanities & Social Sciences: 24 earned semester hours with a cumulative and LSU GPA of at least 2.0; "C" or better in ENGL 1001; and three hours of the General Education Analytical Reasoning requirement

Political science majors must complete at least 33 semester hours in POLl courses, ofwhJ(:h at least 18 hours must be ator above the 3000-level. Field requirements are described below In footnote 3. Students may declare one or two concentrations within the major; a concentration consists of four courses. There are nine different concentrations: four concelltrations cOnsisting of coursework from the fields described in footnote 3 below, and five concenoations which have been designed by the department: (1) law & legal systems; (2) campaigns & elections: (3) race and politics; (4) political analysis; and (5 public policy. Only one non-POLl course may count towards a concentration. Students ay complete the major without designating a concentration.

Justification

Pursuant to external program review and a mandated Action Plan from LSU's Office of Academic Affairs, the department of Political Science during fall 2014 semester executed a thoroughgoi g review of its curriculum. As a result, and upo the recommendation of an Ad Hoc Committee on Curriculum eform, the department unanimously approved a ser"es of changes in the requirements for its majors. pecifically. the department approved the creation of nine concentrations, representing the departme 1's traditional four subfields (American Government & Politics, Comparative Government & Politics, International Politics & Law, and Political Theory) and five new thematic fields (Law & Legal ystems, Campaigns & Elections, Race & Politics, Political Analysis, and Public Policy). As propose ,POll majors will have to option to declare 0 concentration (thereby taking e default curriculum), one concentration from among the nine, or two concentrations from among the nine. Eac concentration requires the taking of four desi nated courses from among a list of co rses deemed germane to that concentration.
