In fact, several families would have returned to homelessness at which point they would have cycled through multiple community resources and programs again. We placed 94 individuals in housing and provided 64 additional households with rent subsidy. This translates to 158 households with a safe place to sleep, children who don't worry about where they are sleeping at night which affects how they behave in school, how they interact with others, and how others interact with them. This also provides a number of benefits to our community: reduction in the number of nights that individuals experience homelessness; our clients are paying their rent and utility bills; and our clients are learning to be good neighbors and tenants.” HOPE SERVICES HAWAII, INC.

TEAMWORK DIVIDES THE TASK, AND MULTIPLIES THE SUCCESS.

AFL-CIO LABOR COMMUNITY SERVICES PROGRAM

The AFL-CIO Labor Community Services Program provides direct services to union members including: strike or lockout assistance, information and referrals for programs, support for dislocated workers, mass layoff crisis support, food pantry assistance, conducts annual workshops that prepare union members for changes at home and in the workplace and plays a lead role in the Hawaiʻi Island United Way campaign.

The AFL-CIO Labor Community Services Program also partners with The Labor Community Services Committee to strengthen our community by promoting volunteerism among its membership. This year members volunteered in a number of projects that benefitted local non-profit organizations including: East Hawaii Special Olympics, KAPA & HIUW Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki Program, Labor of Love: A Union Give Back Project, and The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

VOLUNTEERS DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE THE TIME, THEY JUST HAVE THE HEART.

KĀKOʻO I NĀ KEIKI | SUPPORT THE CHILDREN INITIATIVE

What factors contribute to being successful in school? Having the necessary supplies? Being able to focus on learning rather than hunger? Regular attendance? Feeling confident among peers? Former DOE school

teacher Kaʻea Lyons set out to address these issues by creating the Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki program. In partnership with KAPA Radio and Hawaiʻi Island United Way, Kākoʻo I Nā Keiki collects and distributes school supplies to elementary schools in the fall, bags of food for children who would otherwise go hungry during the winter break, and over 1,000 pairs of slippers to children in the rainy spring season to help our keiki stay healthy. IN ITS SIMPLEST FORM, COMMUNITY MEANS THIS: we belong to each other. This year’s campaign, Give With Aloha, was a call to each of us to acknowledge our interdependence and respond with generosity to strengthen and restore our community. It was a call to affirm the responsibility that we share to model kuleana, kōkua and aloha for the next generation of community leaders. The $1.2MM goal of the campaign was ambitious considering the sacrifices made by many of you in recent years – but your response was true to the legacy of Hawaiʻi Island. He ʻōpu hālau –our community remains healthy, strong, and resilient because of big-hearted people like you. Hawaiʻi Island United Way realized our goal within 10 months and received over 5,000 pledges, with 60% of those pledges coming from companies and individuals who gave above and beyond their donations of previous years. A critical component in any fundraising endeavor is keeping overhead to a minimum – and we applaud the many volunteers who gave generously of their time and resources to ensure that donations received are stewarded toward the non-profit agencies providing valuable services to over 135,000 keiki to kupuna on our island each year. We are so humbled to have had the opportunity to serve as the 2013-2014 Campaign Co-Chairs for Hawaiʻi Island United Way and would like to extend a sincere mahalo to Hawaiʻi County Mayor, Billy Kenoi, for your enthusiastic and steadfast support of the non-profit agencies and programs serving Hawaiʻi Island, and to the Hawaiʻi Island United Way Board Chair, Warren Lee, for your guidance and counsel in this year’s campaign. With Aloha, Wally Lau and Randy Kurohara 2013-2014 Campaign Co-Chairs

21,000 community members provided tools to make healthy choices and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted disease.

YOU INCREASED FOOD SECURITY AND FINANCIAL STABILITY OF VULNERABLE POPULATIONS.

Fed over 2,000 keiki and provided over 150,000 pounds of food to kupuna. 7,800 community members benefitted from free financial counseling resulting in a

plan of action to reduce the causes that led to financial hardship. YOU HELPED VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE AND NEGLECT GET HELP.

352 families completing programs are free of confirmed instances of child abuse and neglect.

200 hours invested in fathers, building their leadership skills and network of support to build stronger families.

YOU EMPOWERED COMMUNITIES.

In a six-month period, 50 residents came together to ensure volunteers performing repairs had hot meals served. The community is now developing its own plan for revitalization.

American Red Cross now has 155 active volunteers prepared in disaster training island-wide.

YOU HELPED SAVE MILLIONS IN TAX DOLLARS.

$1,720,000 saved in psychiatric hospital stays by providing recovery based, supportive housing to severely mentally ill clients.

$750,000 saved in long term care institutions. Programs allow aged kupuna to keep their independence and dignity while allowing their caregivers respite and the ability to maintain employment.

Dispute resolution and self-empowering alternatives to litigation relieve the burden on the district, circuit, and family court system benefitting families, co-workers, neighborhoods and our entire community.

THE RESULTS OF PHILANTHROPY

ARE ALWAYS BEYOND CALCULATION.

“I volunteer because: "It's part of my upbringing. As a student at St. Joseph High it was part of our culture to volunteer 24 hours each quarter. That stuck with me through college and I continue till today to support meaningful organizations. I believe it leads to a better community.” ~Masa Oishi
