DEFINITION OF TERMS

ACCESS LINE - A Company-owned circuit between the customer’s premises.and the Company Central office; the circuit may be physical, carrier or -of radio frequency. Generally, the access line being the point ofconnection at the premise company owned interface (i.e., protector) , tothe central office for access to the switched network. The access linedoes not include material/equipment/apparatusr on the customer side ofthe interface.

Business Access Line - A central office access line terminatingat the customer’s business location(s) to be used primarilyfor business, professional or occupational reasons.

Residence Access Line - A central office access line terminatingat the customer’s residence/dwelling to be used only f’ordomestic purposes.

Public/Semipublic Paystation/Coin Access Line - An individualaccess line which provides selected central office switchingto provide automatic billed call, coin collection/return and”operator assistance.

PBX/PABX Access Line - An individual access line (trunk) whichterminates on a PBX/PABX system which amy require circuitmodification at the central office.

Centrex Access Line - An access line between the interface at thecustomer’s premises and the centrex

ACCESSORIES - Devices which are mechanically attached to, or used with,the facilities furnished by the Company and which are independent of,.and not electrically, acoustically or inductively connected to thecommunications path of the telecommunications systems.

ADDITIONAL LISTING - Any listing of a name or other authorizedinformation in connection with a custom-er’s telephone number inaddition to that to which he is entitled in connection with his regularservice.

ANSWERING SERVICE LINES - Extension or main station lines or patrons ofA telephone answering service which terminate in the telephoneanswering facilities on the premises of the answering service so as topermit the answering service attendant to answer incoming calls on suchlines.

APPLICANT - A person, firm, partnership,: corporation, cooperativeorganization, governmental agency, etc., requesting service from theCompany.

BASIC TERMINATION CHARGE - See “Termination Charge”.

BILL TO THIRD PARTY - The term “Bill to Third Party” denotes a billing” “arrangement by which a call can be charged to an authorized stationline as determined by the Company other than the station lineoriginating the call or the station line where the call is terminated.

BUILDING (Same) - The term “Same Building” is to be interpreted as astructure under one roof, or two or more -structures under separateroofs but connected by enclosed passageways in which the wires orcables of the Company can be safely run provided the plant facilityrequirements are not appreciably greater than would be requirednormally if all structures were under one roof. In those cases wherethere are several structures under separate roofs but connected byenclosed passageways and plant facility requirements for furnishingservice are appreciably greater than would be required normally if allthe structures were under one roof, the term “Same Building” appliesindividually to each of the separate structures. Pipes and conduitsare not considered enclosed passageways. \

BUSINESS SERVICE - Telecommunications service provided a customer wherethe use is primarily or substantially of a business, professional,institutional or otherwise occupational nature.

CALL - w attempted or completed communication.

CALLING CARD TELEPHONE - A station, public or semi-public, equipped forcoin free operation.

CANCELLATION CHARGE - A charge applicable under certain conditions whenan application for service and/or facilities is cancelled in whole orin part prior to the completion of the work involved.

CENTRAL OFFICE - A switching unit in a telephone system which providesservice to the general public, having the necessary equipment andoperating arrangements for terminating and interconnecting customeraccess lines and access trunks or access trunks only. There may bemore than one central office in a building or exchange service area.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

COMPANY - Whereever used in this Tariff, “Company” refers toNelson-Ball Ground Telephone Company, unless the context clearly” .indicates otherwise.

CONNECTING ARRANGEMENT - The equipment provided by the Company toaccomplish the direct electrical connection of customer-providedfacilities with the facilities of the Company-, or of facilities ofCompany with other facilities of the Company..

CONNECTING COMPANY - A corporation, association, partnershipindivual with which communications services are interchanged.

CONSTRUCTION CHARGE - A separate non-recurring charge made forconstruction of facilities in excess of those contemplated underrates quoted in the Local Exchange Semite Section of this Tariff.

CONTINUOUS PROPERTY - The plot of ground, together with any buildingsthereon, occupied by the customer, which i~ not divided by public ~highways or separated by property occupied bj others. Where a customer.occupies property on both sides of a streetl “alley, highway~ body ofwater, railroad right-of-way, etc. , and the properties would otherwisebe continuous, such properties are treated as continuous propertyprovided local wire or cable facilities are used and the customerfurnishes all local distribution pole line facilities or undergroundconduit in connection therewith.

CONTRACT - The arrangement between a customer and the Company underwhich service and facilities are furnished .in accordance with theapplicable provisions of the Tariff.

CUSTOM CALLING FEATURES - Convenient central office features providingspecialwaiting,

Call forwarding: This feature provides an arrangement fortransferring incoming calls to another telephone number.Calls can be transferred to either a local or long distancenumber simply by dialing a 2-digit code and the telephonenumber to which calls are to be transferred. Once CallForwarding is activated, the phone will make one short ringeach time a call is forwarded. However, outgoing calls canstill be made from the phone.

b. Call Waiting: By means of a tone signal a customer who isusing his telephone is alerted when another caller is tryingto reach that station. By touching the receiver button, thefirst caller is put on “hold” permitting the second call to beanswered. The customer can even alternate between the twocalls.

c. Three-Way Calling: This feature-permits three different phonenumbers - local or long distance - to talk at the same time.An existing call can be held, and, by dialing, a secondtelephone call can be established and added to the connection.

d. Speed Calling: This feature provides for the calling of a 7or 10 digit telephone number by dialiang an abbreviated code.

CUSTOMER - Any person, firm, partnership; corporation, municipality,cooperative, organization, governmental agency, etc., provided withtelecommunications service by any utility. i

CUSTOMER-PREMISE EQUIPMENT - Devices or apparatus and their associatedwiring, provided by a customer, which do not constitute acommunications system and whichr when connected to the communicationspath of the telecommunications system, are so connected eitherelectrically, acoustically or inductively.

CUSTOMER-PROVIDED TERMINAL EQUIPMENT - Devices or apparatus and theirassociated wiring, provided by the customer, which do not constitute acommunications system and which~ when connected to the communicationspath of the telecommunications system, are so connected eitherelectrically, acoustically or inductively.

DATA ACCESS ARIWNGEMENT - A protective connecting arrangement for usewith the network control signaling unit, or in lieu of the connectingarrangement an arrangement to identify a central office access line andprotective facilities and procedures to assure proper operation andprotection of the telecommunications network. ‘

DIAL SWITCHING EQUIPMENT - A unit of electro-mechanical or electronicswitching equipment used in a central office or in connection with aprivate branch exchange system.

DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE CHARGE - A charge made for placing requests fortelephone numbers from the Local and Long distance Directory AssistanceOperators.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

CONNECTION - A physical connection of the electrical.communications path.

DIRECTORY LISTINGS - The publication in the Company’s directory ofinformation relative to a customer’s telephone number, by whichtelephone users may ascertain the call number of a desired access line.

1. Caption Listing: The listing of a customer’s name withoutaddress or telephone number followed by a series of indentedlistings convering branches of ‘different departments of thebusiness.

2. Foreign Listing: The listing of a customer in thealphabetical list of an exchange other than that for~ theexchange from which the customer is served.

3. Free Listing: A directory listing for which no specificcharge is made.

4. Indented Listing: A directory li~t~ng indented under anotherlisting.

5. Reference Listing: The listing of a generally accepted nameof a firm or corporation followed by a reference to anotherlisting.

DROP WIRE - Wires used to connect the circuits of open wire, aerial orunderground distribution facilities to the point where connection ismade with the inside wiring.

EXCHANGE - A unit established by a telephone utility for theadministration of telecommunications service in a specific area fotwhich a separate local rate schedule is provided. It may consist of.one or more central offices together with associated plant facilitiesused in furnishing telecommunication services in that area.

EXCHANGE ACCESS LINE - The serving central office line equipment andall Company plant facilities up to and including the Company-providedstandard network interface (i.e., protector). These facilities areCompany-provided and maintained and provide access to and from thetelecommunications network for message toll service and for localcalling appropriate to the tariffed use offering selected by thecustomer.

2. Individual and party line service (Continued)

e. Public Service: A classification of Exchange Accessservice established under tariff provisions for use atlocations chosen or ‘accepted-by the Company as suitableand necessary for furnishing service to the generalpublic and may be equipped with or without a coin box.

EXCHANGE SERVICE AREA - The territory, including suburban and ruralareas served by an exchange, within which local telephone service isfurnished at the exchange access rates applicable within the area. ,

EXTENDED ZONE PAGING SERVICE - Paging services provided by this Companyand Connecting Companies to their customers -by means of antennas andtransmitting equipment which are part Qf the facilities owned andfurnished by this Company and Connecting Companies.

EXTENDED AREA SERVICE - A type of telephone service furnished undertariff provisions whereby customers of a given exchange may completecalls to and, where provided by the tariff, receive messages from oneor more exchanges without the application of long distance messagetelecommunication charges.

EXTENSION STATION - See “Telephone Station”..

EXTENSION RINGER - An additional ringer on the same premises and on thesame line generally operated in connection with the ringer at thestation location. Extension ringers are of two types; Extension Bell(ordinary type) and Extension Gong (loud ringing type) .

FACILITIES - All property, means and instrumentalities owned, operated,leased, licensed, used, furnished, or supplied for, by or in connectionwith the rendition of telephone service.

GRADE OF SERVICE - The term used in describing exchange service withrespect to the number of subscribers who may be connected to a centraloffice access line.

HEADSET - A heads-free, multi-wire device containingacoustic-to-electric (transmitter) and electric-to-acoustic (recei~er)transducer, normally worn on the head of the user for cross talklng,which provides 2-way transmission of live human speech.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

LOCAL CALLING AREA - The area within which telecommunication service isfurnished customers under a specific schedule or exchange accessrates. A local calling area may include one or more exchange serviceareas or portions of exchange service areas.

LOCAL CHANNEL - That portion of channel which connects a station to aninterexchanging channel or a channel connecting two or more stationswithin an exchange area.

LOCAL EXCHANGE SERVICE - See Network Access

LOCAL MESSAGE - A completed communication between customers’ stabionslocal within the same Exchange area or Local Service Area.

LONG DIsTANCE MESSAGE TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICE - The furnishing offacilities for telecommunication between ,stations in different localservice areas in accordance with the regulations and system of chargesspecified in this tariff.

1. Appointment Call - An arrangement made in advance with aparticular party for the establishment of a person-to-personlong distance message telephone conversation at a specifiedtime.

2. Messenger Service - h arrangement whereby the Company, whenpossible and at the request of the calling party will arrangeto notify the called party of a long distance call. Thecompany shall be reimbursed by the calling party for theamount expended for such messenger service, such charges beingsubject to prior authorization by the calling party to theextent that they can be determined in advance. Such chargesfor messenger service are in addition to the tariff chargesfor the message.

RESIDENCE SERVICE - Exchange Access Service furnished to customerswhere the actual or obvious use is for domestic purposes.

ROTARY SERVICE - M arrangement whereby two or more lines furnished toa customer are assigned numbers in sequence and equipped so that callsto the first number are automatically completed to the first non-busyline in the sequence. Lines beyond the first line are referred to as“auxiliary lines”.
