On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin achieved one of themost significant scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century by becoming thefirst men to walk on the moon.
In 1970, Science published a special issue devoted to this remarkable achieve-ment, filled with analyses of the lunar samples the astronauts brought homeand experiments they conducted on the moon.
In honor of the 40th anniversary of this historic event, Science is opening itsonline archives, Science Classic, to make this commemorative issue free withregistration.

Our purpose is to move stem cell science forward.
To that end, two things are required. First we
need to work with the world class scientists
responsible for the breakthroughs that make stem
cell research possible in the rst place. Second, we
need to make that science available in a virtually
failsafe way, so that your work benets from their
work. That means that our product offerings are
proven. They work. They do what we say they will
do. After all, we’re not doing experiments, you are.

Embryoid Body Formation hESCs (H9.2) were cultured with NutriStem™using Matrigel™ matrix for 16 passages and tested in vitro for pluripotencyby EB formation. After being transferred to suspension culture using serum-supplemented medium, the cells spontaneously formed EBs containingcells representing embryonic germ layers. Histological sections of 14-dayold EBs showed the following cell types: (A) neural rosette (ectoderm),(B) neural rosette stained with anti-tubulin, (C) primitive blood vessels(mesoderm) and (D) megakaryocytes (mesoderm). Microfluidics Chip FunctionalityDolomite now offers the ability to integrate metal electrodes into its range of glass andpolymer microfluidic chips. A wide variety of geometries can be achieved, such as inter-digitated electrodes, heaters, and temperature sensors. Applications include impedancedetection, temperature control in microreactors, and generation of electrical fields for di-electrophoresis. With its excellent chemical-resistant and heat-resistant properties, plati-num is most frequently used as an electrode material, but a wide range of metals can bedeposited onto the microfluidic glass or polymer chips, including gold, copper, titanium, and chrome. Metal feature size can be as small as 2 µm. Metal layers can also be depositedon the inside surface of the microchannels.

Desktop NanofabricationThe next generation Dip PenNanolithography (DPN) system, the DPN5000, brings greater control and performance to desktop nanofab-rication. The DPN 5000 offers versatile nanopatterning capabilitiescoupled with high-performance atomic force microscopy imaging forimmediate characterization of the deposited patterns. System high-lights include an ultralow-noise scanner with closed-loop flexuretechnology to produce accurate and repeatable nanoscale patterns. For subsequent imaging of substrates, a low-coherence laser witha reduced laser spot size ensures high-quality lateral-force imag-ing. Enhanced lithography software, InkCAD 4.0, includes improvedcontrol of tip-based patterning, along with nanoscale mapping andpositioning, allowing users to precisely position multiple features, even those created from different materials.NanoInkFor information 847-679-6266www.nanoink.net
Sperm Freezing KitThe JAX Sperm Cryo Kit provides a reliable and cost-effective methodof cryopreserving the sperm of novel mouse models. Researcherscan preserve the sperm in their own laboratories, while still enjoyingthe benefit of having The Jackson Laboratory perform quality con-trol testing and provide long-term storage. The kit contains all thenecessary items, including collection dishes, straws and cassettes, freezing apparatus, cryo-protective media, and a detailed instruc-tion manual. It even includes extra reagents and plasticware to per-form a practice run. The Jackson Laboratory will perform a qualitycontrol test on one sperm sample from each strain to assess fertilityand report the results back. The Jackson LaboratoryFor information 800-422-6423www.jax.org/jaxservices
Confocal FRAP ImagingThe VT-HAWK combines high precision point-scanning fluorescencerecovery after photobleaching (FRAP) with multibeam confocalimaging. The instrument’s ability to switch between imaging andphoto-bleach modes in seconds enables accurate quantitation offluorescence intensity dynamics in precise, user-defined regionsof the image. VT-HAWK supports FRAP, fluorescence loss in photo-
bleaching, photo-activation, and photo-conversion techniques withselectable pinhole sizes for confocal imaging. The instrument’s op-tics deliver optimal laser beam quality at the sample without com-promising the performance of either mode. Options include a laser-merge module that houses up to six solid-state lasers.VisiTech InternationalFor information +44-(0)-191-5166255www.visitech.co.uk
Metabolite DatabaseThe Symyx Metabolite database, a comprehensive collection of drugmetabolism data, is now available to pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and biotechnology researchers via the Symyx Isentris data access, analysis, and decision support system, as well as the web-basedDiscoveryGate content platform. The database can accelerate re-search and development productivity by making it possible for sci-entists to focus on the most therapeutically promising compounds(those with the right metabolic profile) early in the discovery pro-cess. Scientists can use Symyx Metabolite’s structure-searchablemetabolic schemes, biotransformation explorer, and easy-to-usequery and browse tools to explore the fate of parent compounds, their metabolites, and properties by leveraging in-house and Symyxdatabase information.Symyx TechnologiesFor information +44-208-546-0869www.symyx.com
Electrophoresis SoftwareSpresso is free, open-source software for electrophoresis that canease experimental design and troubleshooting. The software pro-vides a new tool for designing and optimizing complex electrophore-sis problems. The designers say that the software is 75 times fasterthan current tools thanks to unique numerical algorithms. The speedcan mean the difference between waiting overnight to get a resultand getting it in a few minutes. Spresso allows scientists to iteratethrough experimental variations much faster than they could by go-ing into the lab and relying on trial and error.Stanford School of EngineeringFor information 650-736-2245microfluidics.stanford.edu/spresso/2008/09/introducing-spresso.html

The GE & Science Prize for Young Life Scientists.
Rewarding brilliance since 1995.
Imagine standing on the podium at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, making youracceptance speech. Imagine joining the ranks of those published in Science magazineand having your essay on your work in molecular biology read by your peers aroundthe world. Imagine taking part in a seminar with the other Prize winners and NobelPrize laureates and discussing your work with leaders in the field. Imagine what youcould do with the US$25,000 prize money. Imagine this brilliant start to your careerand where it could lead you. Now stop imagining, and make it a reality.
Dr. Christine Jacobs-Wagner did just that. In 1997, she entered in the GE & SciencePrize for Young Life Scientists and won the grand prize. So why not you? If you are oneof those who were awarded a Ph.D in 2008, then submit your 1000-word essay byAugust 1, 2009. Your brilliant idea could well be on its way to building a better reality, for you and for those around you.
