Frederick N. Scatena IIIA Life of Service and Science

1954-2013 The sixth annual Philadelphia Global Water Initiative (PGWI) Conference is dedicated to the memory of our late friend, Dr. Frederick (Fred) Scatena, who left us on January 2, 2013. Fred served as the Department Chair for Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a strong supporter of PGWI from its inception in 2006, typically welcoming conference participants each year to the University and to Philadelphia. He untiringly encouraged Penn students to become involved in global water/sanitation/hygiene experiences, and promoted partnerships with diverse organizations such as Water For People, the Bengal Engineering and Science University in India, and NetWwater a Sri Lanka-based NGO that supports gender and water issues. He encouraged and financially supported student participation in conferences in Stockholm, Istanbul, and Marseille as well as in projects in Kenya, India, Cameroon, and Sri Lanka. Fred was a Peace Corps volunteer, a US Forest Service scientist, a leader in advancing science through field studies in Puerto Rico and through research on performance indicators for WASH projects. His greatest legacy will be the many students whom he trained and encouraged to meet high standards in science and to dedicate themselves to helping others. We thank him for his inspiration and we will miss him dearly.
