PASADENA — Fresh offSpaceX’s historic return from theInternational Space Station, company founder Elon Musksaid Friday that he would like tosee humans settle Mars andbecome a “multi-planet species.”
The 40-year-old entrepre-neur reiterated his vision tograduates at the CaliforniaInstitute of Technology, a privateuniversity 10 miles northeast ofLos Angeles known for its sci-ence and engineering programs.
Musk said he hoped someof the newly minted graduateswould work toward Mars colo-nization, either at SpaceX oranother outfit.
“You guys are the magiciansof the 21st century. Don’t let any-thing hold you back,” he said.
“Imagination is the limit ...go out there and create somemagic.”
Musk made headlines lastmonth when SpaceX became thefirst private company to make aroundtrip supply run to the spacestation — a task that had beendominated by governments.
With NASA’s space shuttlefleet retired, the space agency isoutsourcing the job to privateindustry.
SpaceX’s unmannedDragon capsule splashed into thePacific on May 31 after a virtual-ly flawless nine-day test flightthat included docking with themultibillion-dollar orbiting out-post and delivering a load offood, clothing and equipment tothe astronauts aboard.
Earlier this week, Muskaccompanied NASAAdministrator Charles Boldenon a tour of the Dragon capsulethat was plucked from the oceanand trucked to SpaceX’s factoryin Texas. Save for a few scorchmarks from the fiery re-entry, thebell-shaped capsule weathered itsmaiden journey.
The audience cheered whenMusk recounted the historicflight, which he called a “whiteknuckle event.”
“It’s a huge relief. I still can’tquite believe it actually hap-pened,” he said.
SpaceX aimed to launch thenext supply mission inSeptember under a contract withNASA and has predicted thatastronauts could hitch rides tothe space station in as little asthree or four years.
SpaceX planned to test thenext version of the Dragon —designed to carry crews — laterthis year.

The air tankers are back.On Wednesday, Cal Fire’s two air
tankers — 88 and 89 — landed at theGrass Valley Air Attack Base, sportingspiffy new coats of paint.
The USDA Forest Service and theCalifornia Department of Forestry builtthe forerunner to the air base at the
Nevada County Airport in the 1950s,according to The Union’s archives.
The first air tankers at the GrassValley base were converted crop dusters, but those quickly gave way to large war-surplus bombers with larger retardantcapacity.
Cal Fire’s tankers these days arecapable of carrying 1,200 gallons of fireretardant and have turbine-poweredengines to navigate through canyons
safely and efficiently. The tanker’s pilots have been kept
busy in the last few years and likely willbe equally so this season.
In 2011, the base’s air tankers flewmore than 300 missions, providing sup-port to fires up and down the state and inNevada. In 2010, the Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit manning the Grass ValleyAir Attack base responded to 227 fires intotal, 72 in Nevada County.
