Integrated Monitoring of SDG 6

Objectives of Integrated Monitoring

1. Develop methodologies and

tools to monitor SDG 6 global

indicators

2. Raise awareness at national

and global levels about SDG 6

monitoring

3. Enhance country capacity in

monitoring (technical and

institutional)

4. Compile country data and

report on global progress

towards SDG 6

Integrated Monitoring of SDG 6

Principles for SDG 6 monitoring

• Building on and harmonizing national monitoring

efforts

• Steps of progressive monitoring

• Integration of data

• Policy use and data disaggregation

Integrated Monitoring of SDG 6

Target 6.3

Water quality and wastewater

6

“By 2030, improve water

quality by reducing pollution,

eliminating dumping and

minimizing release of

hazardous chemicals and

materials, halving the proportion

of untreated wastewater and

substantially increasing

recycling and safe reuse

globally”

6.3.2 Proportion of bodies of water with good

ambient water quality (UNEP)

Integrated Monitoring of SDG 6

Target 6.4

Water use and scarcity

7

“By 2030, substantially increase

water-use efficiency across all

sectors and ensure sustainable

withdrawals and supply of

freshwater to address water

scarcity and substantially reduce

the number of people suffering

from water scarcity”

6.4.2 Level of water stress:

freshwater withdrawal as a

proportion of available freshwater

resources (FAO)

6.4.1 Change in water use efficiency

over time (FAO)

integrated water resources

management at all levels,

including through

transboundary cooperation

as appropriate”

Suggested next steps for countries

• Identify SDG 6 focal point and establish

a monitoring team for each

target/indicator

• Review SDG 6 global monitoring

methods

• Identify links to existing policy and

monitoring processes

• Plan for national implementation of SDG

6 monitoring

Integrated Monitoring of SDG 6

Some final thoughts

1. Member States are the ultimate owners of

SDG goals, targets, and indicators

2. National statistical office are the official link

to SDG monitoring

3. SDG 6 monitoring methodologies should be

flexible and regularly refined

4. ‘Progressive monitoring steps’ allow

participation with less capacity and

resources

5. Countries don’t have to monitor all indicators

6. Monitoring is a means to an end – essential

to focus on how data will be used
