Claudio Monteverdi, devait composer . Ce
furent deux spectacles mémorables :
VArianna, cet te «tragédie en musique»
d o n t il ne reste en tou t et pour t o u t le
célèbre l amento , et la Mascherata dell'in-
seurs nobles monta i t à seize, tous dégui-
horreur .
plaintif» qu i , ramassé en quelques notes à
l 'orchestre, figure les a t t i tudes doulou-
reuses des Ingrates qui dansent . Parfai-
phonie instrumentale trois fois reprise.
scitées («Ecco ver noi l 'adolorato squa-
dre. . .»)
Martinelli. A sa mor t , aucune des can-
tatrices, pour t an t virtuoses, disponibles
sompteux effet d 'amplification sonore .
harmonies procèdent à pas lents et graves ;
les dissonances, a b o n d a m m e n t distr ibuées,
accentuent l ' émot ion d u discours aux
LORENZO BIANCONI
ENGLISH
IN THE SPRING OF 1608 MANTUA
became for a brief period the theatrical
capital of the world. The wedding of the
heir to the Ducal throne and the Infanta
of Savoy was celebrated with sumptuous
festivities. Rinuccini, already at the time
rightfully considered as the real «inven-
tor» of the musical drama, had come to
Mantua in person well in advance to
provide the texts for two other completely
new spectacles which were to be compo-
sed by the Master of the Chapel at the
Mantuan Court, Claudio Monteverdi. The-
se were the memorable Arianna, the
musical «tragedia» of which only the
famous Lament has survived, and the
Mascheiate dell 'Ingrate, the ballet de cour
alia francese which Monteverdi was to
publish thirty years later as the Ballo delle
ingrate in his Eighth Book of Madrigals.
II Ballo delle Ingrate (first performed on
the evening of 4 June 1608, a few days
after AriannaJ belongs to the genre of
the ballet de cour.
The crux of the ballet de cour was the
dance in which the characters of the
ballet momentarily descended from the
stage onto the floor of the auditorium and
joined hands with the spectators who
sometimes became involved in the collec-
tive dances : in II Ballo delle ingrate there
were sixteen noble dancers, all dressed as
«Ingrate», among them the Duke Vin-
cenzo himself as well as the princely
bridegroom. The singing and the stage
action preceding and following the ballo
were really not much more than acces-
sories : together they formed the thea-
trical pretext and set the tone for the cho-
reographic and symbolic culmination of
the spectacle. In the ballo visible and tan-
gible form is given to the images of har-
mony, concord and virtue which overcome
the disfigured discord of disorder, arbitra-
riness and vice. It is certainly not mere
chance that so many ballets de cour
among them II Ballo delle ingrate - show
such a predilection for scenes of horror
and infernal subjects emphasized by terri-
fying settings such as the «vast, deep
cavern surrounded within by blazing
flames» which represents Hell in II Ballo
and is enhanced by the measured sweet-
ness and the radiant harmoniousness of
the dance that conqtiers all disorder and
discord, putting horror to flight.
In the rigorous meting out of responsibi-
lities among specialists which preceded
complex productions like this one, the
composer had only to provide the musical
outline, the melodic and rhythmic mate-
rial for the Ballo. It was then the task of
the choreographer, the instrumentalists
and the dancers to enlarge it to the extre-
mely ample dimensions demanded. That
is why the proportions of the entrees of
the ballet in II Ballo delle ingrate seem
modest to us today in relation to the
overall dimensions of the score. The
clearly predominant position of the
ballet is, however, preserved, even in the
score, by the intense harmonic suggestive-
ness of the ((melancholy and plaintive
air» which, contained in no more than a
few notes in the orchestra, expresses the
sorrowful attitudes of the dancing ((Ingra-
te*. On the other hand, the vocal charac-
ters in the introduction to the ballet and
in the moving epilogue are perfectly
clearly defined in the score. Pluto, the
infernal sovereign, in particular, is appro-
priately typified by the dark, noble
colours of the basso profondo and by the
bold and perilous extension of the vocal
register. Within the context of the dialo-
gue two true arias are isolated due to the
formalized and schematized segments of
the text and the music. The first is the aria
in which Venus turns to the ladies in the
audience and exhorts them not to resist
the blandishments of love, aUdite, donne,
udite, i saggi detti». This is in ottava-rima
sub-divided somewhat illogically from a
prosodic point of view into two musical
stanzas of four lines each over the same
ground bass (i.e. the same succession of
harmonies) and framed by a thrice repea-
ted instrumental sinfonia. The second aria
is sung by Pluto after Amor and Venus
have taken their leave, «Dal tenebroso
orror del mio gran regno». This is a long
admonition addressed to the female spec-
tators who have just seen the «Ingrate»
temporarily recalled to the light through
the intercession of Amor and Venus in or-
der to show the ladies of Mantua the atro-
cious sufferings inflicted upon the rebels
against love in the world to come. It is in
the form of hendecasyllabic quatrains
(ABBA) which Monteverdi sets to music
without any fixed pattern, but he separa-
tes the stanzas with an unchanging instru-
mental ritomello which clearly corres-
ponds to so many of the dances of the
«Ingrate».
However, more than these two exhorta-
tory «arias», one will remark the moments
of intense emotion, the episodes in which
Monteverdi brings into play all the ressour-
ces of the ((mozione degli affetti» and the
oratorical potential of recitative music al-
ready experimented with in Orfeo and
brought to fruition in the Lamento d'Aria-
na. There are three such episodes : the
persuasive monologue in which Venus des-
cribes to Pluto the iniquitous and perver-
se resistance of the Mantuan «Ingrate»
to the assaults of Love («Non de piu
fidi amanti...»j ; the compassionate duo
between Amor and Venus who watch in
sorrow the infernal torments of the resur-
rected «Ingrate»(«Ecco ver' noi Taddolo-
rato squadre»J ; and the despondent plaint
of one of the «Ingrate» who, in the con-
cluding section of the Ballo, laments the
harsh fate to which they have been con-
demned («Ahi troppo, ahi troppo i
duro»), with the griefstricken final exhor-
tation. «Apprendete pietd, donne e don-
zelle». This was the lament - seasoned
with pungent and painful dissonances -
that Monteverdi had composed for Cate-
rina Martinelli. After her death not even
the most virtuosically equipped of the sin-
gers available in Mantua proved to be
capable of properly performing the heart-
rending expressiveness and the grief-
stricken agony of this lament.
Desirous of paying tribute to the memory
of Caterina Martinelli, the Duke Vincenzo
Gonzaga commissioned the court poet,
Scipione Agnelli, to write a mournful
«canzone», a «sestina» entitled Lagrime
d ' amante al sepolcro del l 'amata which
Monteverdi set to music in 1610 and
published in his Sixth Book of Madri-
gals for five voices (with optional basso
continuo) in 1614 on the death of the
Duke. The same Sixth Book also contain-
ed a reworking for five voices of the
Lamento d 'Arianna. Thus the memory
of «Caterinuccia» dominates this entire
book which, by virtue of the presence of
other unusual texts, too, differs from
the preceding books (for instance several
sonnets are to be found in it.' This was a
complex poetic form, little appreciated
by the madrigalists of the period but
which Monteverdi drew not only from the
most illustrious poet of the Trecento,
Petrarch, but also from the most acclaim-
ed fashionable poet of the age, Marino).
Of all forms encountered in Italian poet-
ry, the Sestina is perhaps the most com-
plicated and the most artificial. It is a
«canzone» with the same six final rhy- -
mes which follow a sophisticated rhyme
scheme. The persistance of the six key
images gave the composer something to
lean on : for example, the opposition of
«terra/cielo» in its different combina-
tions elicits contrats of low and high
registers. At the same time they ensure
the unity and the severe «monotone»
quality of the set as a whole. Within this
unchanging structure Monteverdi, emula-
ting the few but always fascinating Sestinas
of his predecessors, gives a display of
enormous inventiveness and variety. He
superimposes different subjects in the
various parts; he contrasts episodes of
throbbing, «monocordal» declamation
with exclamations of grief and emphatic
vocatives; he causes the name of the
beloved («Corinna») to resound above the
texture of the other voices : he breaks up
the parts into two or three voices and then
has them repeat the phrase all together
with a sumptuous effect of amplified so-
nority. The tone of the whole - in confor-
mity with the lugubrious and plaintive
subject - is marmoreal, disincarnate ; the
harmonies proceed in slow, grave
steps; dissonances, lavishly strewn about,
emphasize the emotional nature of the
discourse at strategic points; the recita-
tion of the text is both transparent and
moving. At the end the resigned contem-
plation of the serenity of eternal peace
corresponds to the lover's despair of the
beginning. It is an ambitious composition
which set the seal on a tormented but
extremely intense period in Monteverdi's
creative career before his departure from
Mantua for the Venetian Republic.
DEUTSCH
baren versinnbildlicht. Im Gegensatz dazu
sind die gesungenen Rollen in der Ein-
führung zum Ball und im erschütternden
Epilog in der Part i tur klar definiert.
Besonders Pluto , der Herrscher der Unter-
welt, ist mit seiner tiefen und edlen
Baßst imme und einer Kühnen und gefähr-
lichen Registererweiterung besonders
zutreffend umrissen. Aus dem Dialog-
Aufbau heben sich nur zwei richtige und
eindeutige "Ar i en" ab, das heißt, formali-
sierte und schematisierte Text- und
Musiksegmente.
leisten : "Udi te , donne , udi te , e i saggi
de t t i " .
gran regno" . Diese lange, an die Zuschau-
erinnen gerichtete Verwarnung, während
die Undankbaren dank der Fürsprache von
Venus und Amor vorübergehend ans
Tageslicht geführt werden, um den Damen
von Mantua klar vor Augen zu führen,
welch fürchterliches Leid den Liebesrebel-
linnen im Jenseits beschert ist, hat als
poetische S t ruk tur endecasillabische
mente beschert , Episoden, in denen Mon-
ausbreiten : Er stellt z.B. mehrere Themen
in verschieden St immen übereinander ;
stärkungseffekt in voller Mehrst immigkeit
aufgenommen werden. Der Gesamt ton ist -
dem düsteren und klagenden Thema des
Gedichtes entsprechend - eisig und ver-
geistigt ; die harmonische For tschre i tung
in Monteverdis Schöpfungsbahn besiegelt,

For representation on the stage
Characters
Amor, Venus, Pluto
Four Spirits of Hades
Eight Ungrateful Souls who dance
Five treble viols,
harpsichord and citarrone,
which instruments may be doubled
according to the size of the place
where the representation takes place.
At first a stage is constructed with a perspective forming a mouth of Hades. There are four passages on the sides which spew forth fire and from which enter, two by two, the Ungrateful Souls with gestures of lamentation to the sound of the entrance music which marks the begin-ning of the ballet. This is repeated by the musicians as many times as may be necessary for the dancers to reach the centre of the stage where they commence the ballet. Pluto is in the middle and leads them with slow, solemn steps, then he stands aside when the entrance is ended and they begin the ballet. Then Pluto interrupts it in the middle and speaks to the Princess and the attendant ladies in the manner indi-cated. The costumes of the Ungrateful Spirits is the colour of ashes adorned with artificial tears. When the ballet has ended they return to Hades in the same way as they left, to the same plaintive music, while one of them remains behind on the stage until the end in order to sing the lamentation as indicated, then she, too, returns to Hades. When the curtain rises a sinfonia is played ad libitum.
AMOR
Here we ate in the Kingdom
Of the implacable god.

So long as the harsh soul
Of the stern King has not bent to your prayers.

Personen
Amor, Venus und Pluto
Vier Schatten der Unterwelt
Acht tanzende Undankbare Seelen
Fünf Violinen,
Cembalo und Chitarrone,
welche Instrumente

VENERE
Va pur come t'agrada. Io qui t'aspetto. Discreto pargoletto.
(Sinfonia)
Udite, Donne, udite!
AMOR
Hold back your fair step, Mother, tlo not set foot
In the murky empire. Lest the pitch black air Sully the whiteness of your fair face. I will go alone into the dark mansion And, beseeching the great King, bring him to you.
VENUS
Do as you wish. I will await you here. Discreet child.
(Sinfoma)
Hear, Ladies, hear! Keep in your hearts The wise counsel of the heavenly discourse : Whoever, an enemy of love, with cruel feelings Arms her heart in the flower of her years,
(Sinfonia)
Will-feel too late his fire and darts. When she no longer has either grace or beauty. And with belated regret calls in vain Upon the deceptive aid of unguents and potions.
PLUTO
Beauteous Mother of Love whose lovely brow Makes Hell shine and renders it clean and pure, What destiny, what design Brings you from heaven to this dark abyss'?
VENUS
0 terrible King of the unnumbered dead. Maternal zeal has lead me From luminous heaven to this horror. Know that my only son. Little by little become a despised archer, arms in vain His shoulder and his wings with bow and arrows.
PLUTO
Who has despoiled the golden arrows of the power That time and time again Has attained the heart of the immortal Thunderer?
AMOR
(Sinfonia}
PLUTO
Holde Liebesmutter, deren leuchtende Augen
Die Hölle rein und hell machen. Welch' Schicksal, welche Absicht Führt dich vom Himmel in diesen finsteren Abgrund?
VENUS
VENERE
PLUTONE
S'invan su l'arco tendi I poderosi strali,
Amor che speri, e che soccorso attendi?
AMORE
Fuor de l'atra caverna Ove piangono invan, di Speme ignude, Scorgi, Signor, quell'empie e crude ! Vegga, vegga sull'Istro Ogni anima superba A qua! martir cruda beltà si serba!
VENUS
VENUS
Women, who in beauty and dignity Surpass the most worthy and renowned, And in the German Empire Go armed with such harshness
That his golden darts And the flames of his torch Make them jest and laugh.
PLUTO
It is wrong to scorn the torch and the arrows of Love. Earth, sea, Hell and Heaven know this well.
VENUS
They hearken to neither the voices nor the complaints
Of the most faithful lovers. Love, Constancy and Faith Find not the shadow of mercy with them.
One laughingly tells Of the torments she inflicts on others. Another Only rejoices in her beauty To draw forth complaints and sighs from a heart. In vain the noble warrior
Fights on the field of honour, comely and proud.
In vain the exalted poet Celebrates with immortal songs A beauty who neither hears nor values him. 0 barbarous pride! 0 hearts of tigers and serpents! To see without pain The faithful lover shed tears and blood! To avenge neither his own honour nor that of others Does Love find a single arrow in his quiver.
PLUTO
If in vain your bow You stretch with powerful darts, What do you hope for, Love, what help do you expect1
AMOR
From the black cavern Where they vainly weep, deprived of Hope, Call forth, Lord, those impious, cruel souls! And let every proud soul On the Danube see To what torment cruel beauty is exposed.
VENUS
AMORE
PLUTO
Alas! What do you demand, Love! Love, do you not know that from the deep dungeons No path leads back to the world?
AMOR
I know that from the depths of Hell The way back to heaven is closed.
But who would oppose your eternal power?
PLUTO
Wise is the lord who uses his power sparingly.
VENUS So you do not remember That it was 1 who lead the fair Proserpina To gather flowers on the mount of eternal fire? Ah! By your happy souls, Ah! By your sweet loves, Let the world behold the unhappy shades!
PLUTO
Too, too strongly Beauteous Mother of Love, The darts of your prayer touch my heart!
Hear! Hear! Hear! O cruel ministers Of the infernal court, hear!
THE INFERNAL SHADES
What would you? What do you command?
PLUTO
Open, open, open The dark gates Of the dim, black prison! And bring forth the doomed host Of the Ungrateful Souls.
VENUS
It is not without some delight That you will walk beneath the roof Of these glorious Kings.
PLUTO
Ach! Was verlangst du, Amor?
PLUTO
Allzu mächtig, Schöne Liebesmutter, Durchdringen die Pfeile deiner Bitte mein Herz.
Hört, hört, hört, 0 grausame Diener Des höllischen Hofes, hört!
DIE HÖLLISCHEN SCHATTEN
Was willst du? Was ist dein Befehl?
PLUTO
öffnet, öffnet, öffnet Die finsteren Pforten Des trüben, düsteren Kerkers Und bringt hervor die verdammte Schar Der undankbaren Seelen.
VENUS
Nicht ohne Entzückung Wirst du in der Wohnstätte Dieser großherzigen Könige wandeln ;
Ivi, di fabri egregi Incredibil lavoro, 0 quanto ammirerai marmorii fregi ! D'ostro lucent' e d'oro Slendon pompose le superbe mura ! E per Dedalea cura. Sorger potrai tra l'indorate travi, Palme e trionfi d'innumerabil Avi.
et A more e Venere cosi dicono ;
AMORE E VENERE
Ecco ver noi l'adolorate squadre Di quell'alme infelici. Oh miserelle! Ahi vista troppo oscura! Felici voi se vi vedeva il fato Men crude e fere, o men leggiadre e belle !
Plutone rivolto verso Amore e Venere cosi dice :
PLUTONE
Tornate al bel seren, celesti Numi !
Rivolto poi all'Ingrate, cosi segue:
PLUTONE
And there admire the incredible works
And marble sculptures Of peerless artists. Shimmering with purple and gold. The high walls, superbly resplendent. And through the art of Daedalus You will see surging up on the gilded ceilings Palms and trophies of innumerable ancestors. A no lesser marvel Will astonish your eyes When they see crowded theatres and stages Putting to shame the Tiber and learned Athens.
Here the Ungrateful Souls begin to appear,
and Love and Venus speak as follows:
AMOR AND VENUS
Behold coming towards us the doleful group Of these unhappy soulds. 0 wretched ones! Ah, fearful vision! Happy you if you had but been Less cruel and pitiless, or less graceful and fair!
Pluto turns towards A mor and Venus and says:
PLUTO
Return to the bright world, celestial Spirits!
Then he turns to the Ungrateful Souls and continues:
PLUTO
Follow me, you rebels against Love!
With gestures of lamentation the Ungrateful Souls begin, two by two, to dance with slow steps the present entrance music. Pluto remains in the middle, walking with natural, slow steps.
When they are all in their places they begin the ballet to the following
(Sinfonia)
They dance half the ballet. Pluto assumes a noble posture and. turning towards the Princess and the Ladies, says:
PLUTO
Madame, may the fear of the dark horror Of my great Kingdom flee from your tender breast. Inflamed by a new fire, 1 do not come To abduct Lady or Maiden under the clear sky.
Tornar a lagrimar nell'antro oscuro!
And even if, pierced by your rays, the wounded heart Must languish eternally in the breast, No, Pluto will not presume to trouble The joyful countenance of so gentle a Queen.
Lady for whose tresses only the eternal light of heaven Could weave a worthy ornament, Your soul's virtue and exquisite usage Should serve as an example to Monarchs and Kings.
Love has just since descended to the dark Kingdom And entreated me to raise up before you These unhappy ones who in perpetual plaints Bewail in vain that they were not wiser.
There is a cave below, deprived of light and air Where thick smoke whirls incessantly; There in maddening belated ardour sigh The souls of those who thanklessly scorned all their lovers.
1 have brought them forth and shown them to you, Their faces pale and their lashes laden with tears, So that, changing your ways and your counsel, You do not also weep in the black cloister.
May the fear of eternal torment Have the power over you that sighs and prayers have not! But what blind reason could will the denial Of that which, in spite of everything, the years take away?
There is no advantage in saving yourselves for the end. Trust me when I say that beauty is mortal.
Then, turning to the Ungrateful Souls, he says:
But you may not remain here, Ungrateful Souls. Return to weep in the Infernal Kingdom.
Here the Ungrateful Spirits begin the second part of the baitet to the same music as the first. When the dance has ended Pluto speaks to them as follows:
Return to the black cloister, Unfortunate Spirits, Return to where your crime restrains you.
Here they return to Hell to the sound of the first entrance music, in the same manner and with the same gesture and steps as before. Only one of them remains on the stage to sing the following con-cluding lament, and then she, too, enters Hades.
ONE OF THE UNGRATEFUL SOULS
Ah, it is too, ah, too hard! Cruel sentence and even crueler torments, To return to weep in the dark cavern!
Aer sereno e puro. Addio per sempre! Addio per sempre, 0 cielo, o sole ! Addio lucide stelle ! Apprendete pietà, Donne e Donzelle !
QUATTRO INGRATE insieme
Apprendete pietà, Donne e Donzelle!
Segue UNA DELLE INGRATE
AI fumo, a gridi, a pianti, A sempiterno affanno!
Ahi!
Clear, pure air, Farewell forever! Farewell forever 0 sky, o sun! Farewell bright stars! Learn pity, 0 Ladies and Damsels!
FOUR UNGRATEFUL SPIRITS together
Learn pity, 0 Ladies and Damsels!
ONE OF THE UNGRATEFUL SPIRITS continues
Back to the smoke, the cries, the laments,
To the eternal torments! Ah, where is the splendour, where the lovers? Where, where are we going, We ladies whose beauty the world esteemed? Clear, pure air, Farewell forever! Farewell forever O sky, o sun! Farewell bright stars! Learn pity, 0 Ladies and Damsels.
Klare, reine Luft, Lebewohl für immer, lebewohl! 0 Himmel, o Sonne! Strahlende Sterne, lebetwohl! Lernet das Mitleid, o Damen und Mädchen!
VIER UNDANKBARE SEELEN, zusammen
0 Himmel, o Sonne! Strahlende Sterne, lebetwohl! Lernet das Mitleid, o Damen und Mädchen!
I
0 mortal ashes, rapacious tomb, Made for my fair sun, earthly Heaven, Ah, alas! I come to consign you to the earth. With you my heart is sealed up in the marble's breast, And day and night tormented Glauco lives In fire, in tears, in pain, in wrath.
II
Tell, o rivers, and you who hear Glauco Rending the air with his cries upon this tomb, Deserted fields, and Nymphs and Heaven who know;
1 feed on sorrow, I drink tears, - 0 happy stone whose bosom is her bed -Since the frozen earth has covered my love.
I
V
Ahi Morte! Ahi tomba!»
Cedano al pianto
I detti ! Amato seno A te dia pace il Cielo,
Pace a te, Glauco Prega, honorata tomba
E sacra terra.
Scipione Agnelli
III
Ml
The sun will granl the earth his light by night. The moon will shine by day before Glauco Leaves off kissing, honouring this fair breast Which was the nesl of Love, and the harsh tomb Oppresses. May the wild beasts and Heaven Granl more than deep sighs and tears!
IV
But, o Nymph, Heaven gathers you to his bosom, And I see the earth reduced to widowhood by you. The woods deserted, the tears flowing in rivers. Dryads and wood-nymphs repeat the laments Of unhappy Glauco, and on the tomb Sing the praises of the beloved .breast.
V
0 golden tresses, fair snows of her breast, 0 lilies of her hand which envious Heaven Has stolen, once closed up in the blind tomb, What hides you? Alas, paltry earth Conceals the flower of all beauty, Glauco's sun! Ah! Muses! Here shed your tears!
VI
Thus, beloved relics, will these my eyes Not shed a sea of tears upon the noble breast Of a cold stone? Echo! Afflicted Glauco Calls «Corinna» : let the sea and Heaven, And the winds at ail hours, and the earth call « Ah, Corinna! Ah, Death! Ah, Tomb!»
Let words give way To tears! Beloved breast.
Heaven grant you peace, Peace to you, Glauco
Prays, honoured tomb, And sacred earth.
III
Corinna! Ach. Tod! Ach, Grab!"
Worte sollen Tränen weichen! Geliebte Brust.
Sei dir Frieden vom Himmel gegönnt;
Glaueos Gebet, Frieden sei mit dir, verehrtes Grab,
Geweihte Erde!
