AMSI was established in November, 2002

Our aim is to improve the teaching of mathematics at primary and secondary levels.

This is accomplished by joining with:

• teachers, • mathematics teacher associations and

• government agencies

to develop a strategy to address issues such as teacher shortfalls and under-qualified teachers.

AMSI has 34 members. All members have a direct involvement in mathematics and careers in mathematics.

Members include:

• Australian university mathematics departments,

• the Australian Mathematics Trust,

• the Australian Bureau of Statistics,

• the Bureau of Meteorology and

• the CSIRO.

AMSI’s education division, the International Centre of Excellence for Education in

Mathematics (ICE-EM), has been undertaking wide ranging education programs at primary,

secondary and tertiary levels since 2004.

The ICE-EM Mathematics Program provides books, professional development and teacher

resource materials.

The Australian Curriculum versions of the books are published by Cambridge University Press.

Outreach

Between 2014 and 2016 the Outreach team will work in:

The William Buckland Foundation supported Project

Professional development sessions, one of these specifically for secondary mathematics teachers and careers advisors.

Schools visits

• Regular and scheduled at a time to suit the school.

• Includes modelled lessons, one-to-one sessions, target specific issues such as content or graduate teachers

CRT costs are covered by the school.

We will ask participating teachers to complete a survey at the start and again at the end.

If you wish, teachers may choose to undertake a short test of their content knowledge to help them manage their mathematical growth.

School Careers materials

TIMES Project

Careers materials have been developed to raise awareness among students, parents, school career advisers and others about the mathematics requirements for different careers.

An initial research and review process established key directions with a broad range of employer groups and key stakeholders involved in the process.

Packs of TIMES careers Materials were sent to every school in the country in 2010.

maths: make your career count

We have produced careers materials that demonstrate how a range of people use mathematics in their work:

• 12 Posters

• 10 three-minute videos

• A 16 page brochure containing 20 profiles

Mathematics and Statistics by Email CSIRO, ABS and AMSI jointly develop and operate a regular enewsletter, Maths by Email (MbE). MbE is based on the highly successful Science by Email model operated by CSIRO. It is aimed at primary and secondary school teachers, students of age 10+ and families. www.csiro.au/mathsbyemail

The Modules

TIMES Project

The Modules are teaching and learning resources for teachers - supporting the implementation of the national mathematics curriculum. Modules have been written to support teachers in their teaching of mathematics. Teachers in Outreach clusters have worked with us to develop the materials. These will provide teachers with a valuable mathematical resource. The Modules are available through Scootle and FUSE or via www.amsi.org.au/teachermodules

Page 18: Geelong Cluster Launch 11 March 2014 - AMSIamsi.org.au/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2013/09/Cluster...2014/03/11  · teachers - supporting theimplementation of the national mathematics

TIMES Project

The use of the modules has been a key element of the AMSI’s Outreach work. In each school the way in which they are used is different. The one common factor is that the modules focus teacher attention on the importance of enhancing their understanding of and confidence with mathematics content.

The Modules

Each module has the following components: Assumed knowledge Motivation Content Links forward History Each module contains a small number of exercises for the teacher throughout.

TIMES Project

There are 68 modules. The material has been developed for years F-10. They are organised through the strands of the Australian Curriculum. These are: Number and algebra Measurement and geometry Statistics and probability Go to www.amsi.org.au/teachermodules

Maths Ad(d)s 16 years of career materials for secondary students

This 50-page A4 booklet contains job advertisements that have appeared recently in the press or on the Internet. They show that a

great number and variety of careers are available to prospective university students after

graduation if they include mathematics or statistics in their degrees.

The booklet also includes advice on applying for jobs.

New material for Year 11 and 12

There are 25 modules for the new Australian Curriculum subject: Mathematical methods. The material has been developed for teachers of Years 11 and 12. Go to http://www.amsi.org.au/ESA_Senior_years/SeniorsHome.html

New material for Year 11 and 12

To answer the question: “When am I ever going to use this? Each module contains a discussion of a component of the mathematics curriculum for years 11 and 12. There are exercises that teachers may wish to undertake - answers are given at the end of the module and often screencasts giving a solution. The modules are organised through the topic groupings shown at left.

New material for Year 11 and 12

There are many areas of the new senior school curriculum that are not presently covered in all states. The modules are designed to help teachers to prepare topics for teaching. The modules may also be helpful with university bridging courses where the student has not completed a calculus course at school. There are 25 modules with downloadable PDFs.

New material for Year 11 and 12

To answer the question: “When am I ever going to use this? Four videos of mathematicians talking about applications of mathematics have been made. There are notes to accompany each of the videos that go through the associated mathematics more fully.

The modules are linked electronically to the Australian Curriculum through Scootle. Education Services Australia (ESA), the new Curriculum Corporation, and AMSI are working closely to facilitate this.
