What Is GDS?

The Global Dialing Scheme A structure for peering

between gatekeepers, such that any endpoint associated with a ViDeNet zone may dial an endpoint in any other ViDeNet zone

ViDeNet Version 3 Dial Plan A numbering plan for global

video and voice over IP The Internet2 Commons uses

GDS based addressing

Page 3: GDS and The Internet2 Commons

Why do I need it?

The Internet2 Commons uses GDS based dialing

It allows for dialing to any GDS enabled gatekeeper without changing any settings

As a site coordinator you will have to teach your users how to use it

Page 4: GDS and The Internet2 Commons

How does it work?

Each number has four parts• International Access Code (IAC) (also called the world

gatekeeper prefix)- defined as 00 • A Country Code (CC)- follows the ITU international access

code system (1 for the US)• An Organizational Prefix (OP)- ViDeNet assigned them;

some countries use area code/exchange prefix• An Endpoint Number (EN)- a unique number (sometimes

called H.323 extension) assigned to each endpoint by each organization (could be a E164 number or any other unique number)

In summary the numbers are ordered:– IAC CC OP EN

Page 5: GDS and The Internet2 Commons

GDS for endpoints at the commons

The IAC is “00”The CC is “1”The Internet2 Commons was assigned an OP of 189For the EN, we use your full 10 digit phone number

• This is due to endpoints from all over the country registering with our GK

• It also enables easy contacting of users

If you have more than one Video station and only one telephone number, follow the phone number by an integer

The number of my telephone on my desk at Ohio State is 614 292 8443 and the GDS dial number of my Viewstation is thus:

• 00 1 189 6142928443 (spaces for readability only)

Page 6: GDS and The Internet2 Commons

GDS for multipoint conferences

To get to the commons GK it’s the same as before (001189)

For conferences the next three digits denote the MCU and conference type

• 780 calls the Polycom MCU• 700 calls the Radvision MCU

The final four digits are four your specific instance of a conference

• Complete conference string is –00 1 189 780 1234
