WELCOME TO GREENWICH+DOCKLANDS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL AND OUR THIRD ANNUAL SHOWCASE, WHICH IS PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH XTRAX Last year there was an unprecedented expansion of outdoor arts events across the country. The Olympic and Paralympic Games and associated Cultural Olympiad gave a huge boost to the street arts sector revealing a massive groundswell of public support. The creativity and imagination of artists working outdoors was one of the great success stories of 2012, and, as we move into the post-Olympic landscape, GDIF is keen to work towards ensuring that the achievements of last year are sustained and developed. This showcase is very much part of that ambition, providing an opportunity for producers, festivals, funders and local authorities to experience some of the exciting work currently being created outdoors by UK and European artists over an intensive midsummer weekend.

We’re delighted to be presenting new work supported through our association with the Arts Council England funded Without Walls consortium. Without Walls is developing into a key strategic agency for the commissioning, development and presentation of outdoor work in this country and there are a number of new productions taking place in both Greenwich and Tower Hamlets this weekend which have been supported by Without Walls (including our opening night spectacle, As the World Tipped, which received Without Walls support in 2011).

In the post-Olympic world GDIF recognises the importance of shared working and partnership and so we’re also delighted to be showcasing new work created through our collaboration with Latitude, the Lyric Hammersmith and Watford Palace Theatre. By working in this way we’ve been able to co-commission four new small/medium scale productions from RashDash, Pins and Needles, Pin the Tale and Tangled Feet and are particularly pleased to be engaging with a new generation of theatre makers, usually more associated with building based venues.

This year’s Showcase also celebrates the fortieth anniversary of Britain joining the EU and acknowledges the inspiration of the European style outdoor theatre festival model with a programme of exciting new work from 7 European countries. We’ve also crossed the river to take in a brand new site at Island Gardens in Tower Hamlets, so alongside the programme in Greenwich, you’ll be able to cross the river by way of a 10 minute walk through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel to experience exciting new productions from Graeae, Tilted Productions, Pif-Paf, Dizzy O’Dare and Fevered Sleep on the Festival’s north bank.

I very much hope that you enjoy your weekend at GDIF and take advantage of the opportunities it provides to not only see great work but network with artists and colleagues from across the UK and internationally.

WELCOME FROM THE ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICHOn behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich I‘m delighted to welcome you to this year‘s London showcase of outdoor arts.

This year promises to be the most exciting and memorable season yet.

Last year we saw some of the most significant moments in the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s history. Achieving Royal Status in recognition of its long-standing ties with the British Monarchy in February, the summer saw the eyes of the world focus on Royal Greenwich as it hosted the magnificent events during London 2012.

The Royal Greenwich Festivals offer something for everyone from imaginative street performance, music to suit all tastes and invigorating dance performances. And have firmly established Royal Greenwich as the place to experience world-class entertainment as it showcases the very best in dance, music, art and theatre. Royal Greenwich is recognised as a great place of culture, its rich mix of arts and entertainment helping to attract millions of visitors from all over the UK and worldwide every year.

With its compelling street theatre Greenwich+Docklands International Festival is a highlight event of The Royal Greenwich Festivals, supported by The Royal Borough of Greenwich.

We hope you will enjoy this unique and vibrant cultural energy in Royal Greenwich.

For further information, please visit www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/festivals

Cllr Chris RobertsLeader, Royal Borough of Greenwich

WELCOME FROM ARTS COUNCIL ENGLANDAs we saw last year in the enormously successful Cultural Olympiad, there is a public appetite for art that is surprising, spectacular, moving, beautiful and transformative. The Greenwich+Docklands International Festival is excellent at commissioning and showcasing work that does just that and Arts Council England is very proud to be a principal supporter for that reason.

It is particularly pleasing to see the Festival build on its wonderful partnerships in presenting Deaf and disabled artists and its commitment to the very best of outdoor work from across the globe and I look forward to joining audiences for a real treat.

WELCOME FROM THE OLD ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGEWelcome to Sir Christopher Wren’s twin-domed riverside masterpiece and one of London’s most famous landmarks. Over 500 years ago, Henry VIII’s favourite royal palace stood on this site and it is here that his daughter Elizabeth I was born and spent the early years of her reign.

In the late 17th century, the Palace was in disrepair and Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, by Royal command, developed the site as the Royal Hospital for Seamen - for the benefit of old and injured sailors. In 1806, the body of Admiral Nelson lay in state in the Painted Hall. In 1873, the Hospital was transformed into the Royal Naval College, as a training facility for the Navy. Today, it’s one of the UK’s leading visitor attractions and host to a vibrant programme of cultural events throughout the year.

I very much hope that you will enjoy the GDIF2013 events at the Old Royal Naval College and find time to take in the Painted Hall, the Chapel and Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre and Shop - you will be surprised and amazed at what you find!

And do come back again!

Brendan McCarthyChief Executive, Old Royal Naval College

WELCOME FROM TOWER HAMLETSWelcome from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets

On behalf of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, I am delighted to welcome you to the dynamic and spectacular programme of events that take place on the north side of the River Thames as part of the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival for 2013.

Tower Hamlets Council works hard to deliver a high calibre arts programme that appeals to residents, commuters and visitors alike and I am proud of our continued partnership with GDIF, which provides a highlight of the cultural calendar.

The borough has some stunning riverside locations, and Island Gardens with its gorgeous views provides the perfect venue for the diverse and stimulating range of events which make up the Island Fair from 21 – 23 June. This year the Island Fair comprises circus, street theatre and a host of aerial performances.

A number of intriguing themes are imaginatively choreographed, from the imbalanced disruption caused by stargazing into stormy skies, witnessing the mind-reading abilities of Mr E and the all-seeing eyes of the Orbilys. Audiences of all ages and backgrounds will be thrilled by what’s on offer.

Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets

WELCOME FROM ROYAL MUSEUMS OF GREENWICHRoyal Museums Greenwich comprise the National Maritime Museum (NMM), the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the 17th-century Queen’s House and the Cutty Sark. The Museum, Observatory and Queen’s House lie within the historic boundaries of Greenwich Royal Park, at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. The Museum, the world’s largest of its type, tells the story of Britain and the sea, and the importance of the ocean in our lives today. The Observatory, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675, is the home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian – Longitude 0°. It displays the NMM’s scientific collections in galleries covering time, space and astronomy, and includes London’s only public planetarium. The 17th-century Queen’s House, England’s first classical building, is a rare surviving example of the work of Inigo Jones and is now primarily used to display the NMM’s internationally significant art collection. The Cutty Sark is one of the world’s most famous ships, the last surviving tea clipper and the fastest of her time. In 2012 she was reopened following a six-year, £50-million conservation programme, which included raising her over three metres in her dock. Visitors can now walk underneath the ship’s keel and view the elegant lines of her hull, which was the secret of her success. We are delighted to be hosting the Greenwich+ Docklands International Festival in the National Maritime Museum grounds, for the fifth year, and hope that you enjoy a spectacular show. Kevin Fewster, Director, Royal Museums Greenwich

EUROPEAN COMMISSION

No man is an island, said John Donne. And in today’s globalised world, no island is truly an island. The United Kingdom has for the last 40 years been linked to other European countries through its membership of the European Union. This relationship has been political and economic, certainly, and those dimensions of it have recently moved closer to the top of the agenda. But the relationship has also been cultural and events like the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival remind us of those cultural ties; they remind us how this relationship is about joint experiences and learning from each other.

GDIF will highlight some important challenges for our collective future such as climate change and youth unemployment. This festival, taking place as it does in one of Europe’s major cities, is an unusual and exciting way to mark 40 years of UK membership of the EU.

Jacqueline MinorHead of the EC Representation in the UK

FLASHMOB DANCE PERFORMANCE The Pod DancersFri 21 June, 5.45pmCutty Sark Gardens

There will be a short flashmob performance celebrating the 40th anniversary of the UK membership of the European Union, performed by 60 members of the POD Dancers (volunteer cast members of last year’s London 2012 Olympic ceremonies). The performance has been choreographed by Nathan Wright and Claira Vaughan with a remixed version of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” by DJ Excalibah.

GROWTH

Making their UK debut, Aardlek is an Amsterdam based visual and street theatre company who uncover surreal and wonderful visions of everyday life. In this playful performance, the company unpicks humanity’s relationship with nature creating a series of provocative and surprising images. In one moment there’s an overhead tangle of exotic vegetation and in the next a humorous perspective on our efforts to hold back the power of the tide. Witty and thought-provoking this is a completely unique theatrical experience with some unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Bad Taste Company combine world-class Breaking skills with physical theatre and narrative to produce work that has been said to “take British urban dance to new heights” (Royston Maldoom OBE). Bad Taste have represented the UK and Ireland internationally since 1998, and continue to create work that redefines the vocabulary of breaking as a performance art.

FAUST

Rooted in the atmosphere of the 1920’s prohibition era this reimagining of the classic tale is set to the sounds of Charleston, Lindy Hop and big band music.

Told through the intense physical style for which Bad Taste Company have become renowned, Cutty Sark Gardens will be transformed into a Speakeasy with a cast of gangsters, bootleggers, gamblers, flappers and hep cats. World-class hip-hop dance and authentic period styling will fuse with flaming cocktails, burning boxing rings and a literally explosive set to encapsulate the zest and exuberance of the roaring ’20s.

Bicycle Ballet creates exhilarating outdoor dance performances on bikes, exploring the joyful highs and gritty lows of cycling. The choreographies fuse dance, circus and physical theatre with visual spectacle, comedy and striking soundtracks. At the heart of the company is engaging participants and audiences in new, exciting and unexpected ways, and, of course, encouraging cycling.

EVERYDAY HERO

On a quest for adventure and self-discovery, a reluctant hero crosses the threshold and plunges into a forest of fear. Through real and imagined landscapes, helped and hindered by people and creatures along the way, the hero must battle demons to return with untold riches on a tandem.

Everyday Hero is an outdoor dance production, performed by a company of visually impaired and sighted dancers. The performance will fuse dance, visual spectacle and a striking soundtrack and will receive its UK premiere at GDIF.

The Belgian art group Captain Boomer take their name from a character in Moby Dick who was captain of the whaling ship The Samuel Enderby. They create innovative and surprising installations which ambush public spaces and disrupt everyday life. Working in collaboration with the sculptor Zephyr they have constructed a complete sperm whale which is about 17 metres long and is made of wood, aluminium and polyester.

Through the centuries, the beaching of a whale has always led to excitement and community gatherings. Captain Boomer have created a super-real, life-sized sculpture/art installation which celebrates the magnificence of whales, sea creatures and the sea.

They have conceived the project as a piece of total theatre with a “beaching” (staged at GDIF on 20 June as a surprise) attended by “scientists” followed by a weekend installation in which the whale sculpture is the focus of “scientific enquiry” and other staged events in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College. Having created this “Leviathan” Captain Boomer are now keen to seek out new waterfront festival settings and locations keen to host future whale beachings!

Claiming the street as a natural meeting place, Itinerània practises an ephemeral and festive intervention in the public space. Its installations are made primarily of iron and wood, using visible basic mechanical structures and devices.

TITERETÚ

Last year, GDIF audiences got lost in Compañía Itinerània’s ingenious mechanical maze: puzzling and playing games to find their way out of the labyrinth. Playfulness is at the heart of their new installation which receives its UK premiere at GDIF 2013, but this time you, the audience, are in the driving seat. A giant puppet will be stationed and ready for you to take control of the strings. This is your chance to test your balance, precision and co-ordination as you choreograph the movements of a character 3 times your size!

Titeretú is based on an original idea by Sandra Sardà and Itinerània.

Pau Portabella and Marta Torrents met in Barcelona Circus School in 2003. They started working together in acrobalance and then followed a 3 year course in Le Lido, in Toulouse Circus School. In 2009, they created the company Fet a Mà and their first short piece. Circus is to them a permanent discovery, a way to convey emotions and pure feelings to the audience, in any empty space. They believe in a circus without contrivance, where the body speaks by itself, creating its own language and expressing what it is going through. They study human relations and the way these disturb physical relations. They work on the physical and psychological limits that one faces everyday, such as obsessions that, if carried to extremes, can turn into something utterly absurd.

CRU (RAW)

Fet a Mà uses circus as a way of describing and sharing intense emotional worlds – this is circus as Samuel Beckett might have imagined it. In this new production, they expose humanity’s inner fragility and vulnerability with an astounding physical performance. An apparently simple acrobatic duet becomes much more; pulling back the surface to reveal something raw - layers of thought, feeling, pain and humour. Celebrated for their expressive style of performance, Fet a Mà is led by Pau Portabella and Marta Torrrents and Cru receives its UK premiere at GDIF.

Magmanus Company is a Swedish circus company founded in 2009 by the Franco-Norwegian duo Manu Tiger and Magnus Bjoru.

Our vision of the company is to spread happiness and inspire our audience to follow their dreams. We know this is a very big challenge to accomplish by performing arts, but we believe it´s important to set our goals high and we think the combination of impressive circus skills, humour and the intensive interaction with the audience on stage is a very good toolbox to deliver the message we believe in.

MAGMANUS SHOW

This award-winning Swedish circus show is a barnstorming, rip-roaring, stomach turning comedy. Little and Large, the Two Ronnies, Ant and Dec – we all love a comic double act – now meet the street theatre version, as Magmanus put friendships to the test with flying acrobatics, feats of balance and Bollywood juggling. With impressive circus skills, non-stop humour and intensive audience participation, this show’s cheeky finale is guaranteed to leave you with a smile.

Rag and Bone breathe new life into outdoor theatre and processional traditions, telling stories, creating shows, building giants, beasts, dream machines and fiery spectacles.

BONE YARD TALES

Astonishing characters come to life from a wasteland of discarded rubbish. A mound of debris is transformed into a wonderland of angels, boats and mechanical trees. This is the Bone Yard – a scrap heap, or your back yard; constantly changing and growing.

Rag and Bone dance, delight and despair in a world drowning in junk. But are they alone? Did that rubbish move? And are the ‘Bone Yard Tales’ really a series of myths telling of the destructive power and addictive nature of waste, or just stories spun by Rag to distract Bone from bashing bits of metal all the time?

Bone Yard Tales’ combination of physical theatre, puppetry and live music revels in the delight of transformation creating spectacular storytelling for all ages.

GDIF WRITER IN RESIDENCE

Poet and playwright Lemn Sissay MBE is GDIF’s first ever writer in residence. He has collaborated with the Belgian artists’ group Captain Boomer to create a local context and backstory for the giant sperm whale sculpture which appeared in Greenwich over the weekend of 21 – 23 June as part of an Arts Council England funded project developed with GLL Royal Greenwich Libraries.

Lemn was the first poet commissioned for the 2012 Olympic Games. His poem Spark Catchers is written onto a structure at The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. In Greenwich Lemn wrote the words on MVMNT Café Greenwich station – the only building in the world built beneath a tweet - which won the 2013 Design Week Awards.

Lemn curated the world’s first Literature Festival of the Sea in Southend. He travelled the oceans to the arctic with Cape Farewell with fifteen artists including Jarvis Cocker, Laurie Anderson and Martha Wainwright. He is associate artist at London’s Southbank Centre where he performed Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner with Bellowhead. Tilted Productions creates vivid imagery ranging from subtly poetic to brutally disturbing, from darkly humorous to mysteriously haunting. The quest is not merely to entertain with great performance skills but to challenge and touch an audience.

The work also features a constantly evolving interest in the physical dialogue between human bodies and objects, specifically designed props, transformable sets, architectures or landscape elements – their role is integral as movement catalysts and metaphors within the theatrical concept.

AS THE WORLD TIPPED

This epic outdoor performance confronts the theme of climate change head on, combining aerial theatre, filmscape, original music and ingenious staging. Dramatising the Copenhagen Conference on climate change as a universal human tragedy, the show offers a compelling vision of a planet in crisis and an appeal for positive change in response to a disaster of our own creation. Written and directed by Nigel Jamieson, one of the world’s leading forces in outdoor spectacle, As The World Tipped has been created by the pioneering team from Wired Aerial Theatre.
